Girls wearing hats in school

Where I went to school they occasionally did the same thing with a hat or blue jeans ( I went to a catholic hs ) and it also went to charity. And you are so correct with the playoff thing. It has not happened very often in my 47 years.

I was in H.S. from Fall 1992 until Spring 1996 so other than the Indians in the fall of 1995 it was slim pickings. I was in a private school from 1st through 8th grade though and we did have some years we could wear a Browns tie while they were in the playoffs. That was until they inevitably decided to drop balls on the 1 or play the prevent defense against possibly the best 4th quarter QB to ever play the game and it was back to the plaid before the Super Bowl. At least they had ten guys on the field for that one though which couldn't be said for the whole game.

Good times.

I'm finding this endlessly amusing. Geezer that I am, I can testify to the opposite situation: when I was in parochial grade school we were REQUIRED to wear hats, it was part of our uniform to wear a beanie everyday. The beanie was dropped in the early 1970's, so I only wore them for a few years, but my elder sisters wore them all the way through to HS graduation. It used to be a standard part of parochial schoolgirls' uniforms all over the country.

The logic for headcoverings is not the same for men and women, therefore it isn't one of those things that has to be equal. Technically, women cover their hair, while men cover their heads. For men, doffing the hat indoors is a gesture of respect for authority, but for women, keeping the hair covered is intended to be a measure of modesty. More importantly in this day and age, if you universally ban head coverings in a public school you are likely to eventually run afoul of someone's religious beliefs, as Muslim women cover, but so do Jewish boys. I can understand banning brimmed hats in class, but IMO banning hats altogether is overkill -- what is the point?

Hi,

Am I being old fashion by thinking and teaching my children it is okay for ladies but not men to wear hats indoors?

Allison

If that's important to you than I don't see an issue with it, but that's a separate issue that wearing hats in school. If the school has a no hats rule, then it doesn't matter what the etiquette about hats on men vs.hats on women is.

Thanks for the clarifications on that. You're statement makes a lot more sense than the OP's original post. And they do make exceptions to the rule per student, plus it's easier to make a ban than to go into every detail of what is acceptable and what is not. There's always the one to stretch the rule as far as possible. A blanket ban on head coverings is easy, if something is on your head, take it off. If you must wear it (like Muslim or Jewish), then that one and only student is allowed an exception. If you make a rule saying scarves are allowed, then there will be a ton of girls and probably some guys trying to extend that rule into something else entirely, defeating the purpose.

Really? Why? (Or is that what that :confused3 is for? lol) Seems a little dorky. Is it a school uniform school? Private school? My DS lives in soccer shirts and polo shirts; I'm picturing how silly they'd look tucked in, and into belted pants.::yes::

LOL--I think that all guys that wear their shirts tucked into their pants look dorky-glad this is one rule our school doesn't have!
Funny thing is each school in out district has different rules- my daughters grade school had no rule about coloring their hair, her friends school in same district you couldn't dye your hair (any unnatural color)-so my daughter had the bottom 6 inches of her hair dyed blue in grade school but now in Jr High that is against their rules, high school you ca dye your hair any color--no set rules cover the whole district!

OP here, I agree with this 100% there will be no more wearing hats in class for her. I was more concerned about outside school and wondering if my understanding of hat etiquette was old fashion. I appreciate everyones remarks, I still contend there is a difference between a lady wearing a hat as part of her outfit vs a man (or women) wearing a baseball cap indoors (ie at a restaurant or in church.) Next week we will see lots of gorgeous hats on ladies attending the Royal wedding and I'm sure they know what is proper and not. I just wanted to make sure I was teaching my children proper etiquette for real life social situations. I'll just change my teaching to include unless otherwise directed by a dress code ;).

It's perfectly acceptable for a woman to wear a hat indoors....provided there is no stated dress code. ;)
This is correct.

A "No Hats in the Classroom Rule" trumps everything else related to hats and women.

Agreed. Also, I don't think it would be very fair for the girls to be allowed to wear hats and boys cannot (regardless of the original reason why women were "allowed" hats indoors and men were not). All a teenage boy is going to hear is a double standard.

There were days you could pay a $1 to wear a hat and it went to charity but it was usually the last Friday before finals for each semester or while a Cleveland team was in the playoffs. That last part didn't happen too often obviously.

Exactly!

Dd10 wears a hat almost every day without any issues. However, I would not let my boys wear hats to school. Guess I'm old fashioned. They have questioned my as to why my dd can wear her hats out in restaurants, and they can't. Tradition? Why do my pre-pubescent girls have to cover their nipples, and not my boys, when swimming? They look exactly the same.

Yep, totally agree with this. The school's rules state no hats, that means no hats, period.

That's fair. Students should not be allowed to wear hats to school in this day and age unless it is a special occasion (e.g. "funny hat day", "college day", that particular school's official hats perhaps on special days, local professional team hats on special days like for the World Series or Superbowl).
And it would be totally unfair for the girls to be able to if the boys can't. The school acted appropriately by asking your daughter not to wear her hat.

Both our middle and high schools do this during homecoming and spirit weeks. At both schools, it considered a fund raiser and the kids have to pay 50 cents to wear the hat. In middle school, the money goes into the PTA fund (helps to pay for school dances) and in high school, you have to tell them what grade you are in and the money goes into your classes fund.

Unless it is "crazy hat day" kids are not allowed to wear hats in during school hours.

Not sure about my dd's college though. I will ask her.

But the society we live in is denegrating slowly to incorporate other peoples views of culture.

I'd love someone to tell the older ladies at my church that they can't wear hats anymore to the service... I commented earlier, but to expand, I think it's perfectly fine for ladies to wear hats indoors, just not baseball caps. And it kills me when men are still wearing their hats at the dinner table. I want to walk over and slap them off their head.

That is ridiculous.....there is nothing wrong with a man wearing a ball cap at a casual restaurant.

Why? What exactly is bad about a hat on a man's head indoors?

Seriously, I don't want to see their bad hat hair....keep the hat on! :thumbsup2

There are divided opinions on what is acceptable etiquette for hats, so you just teach your children in accordance with your beliefs. I have two boys who take their hats off as soon as they walk indoors. Hats in restaurants - never. A lot of people don't agree, but it works for our family.

Hi,

My 13 year old daughter got in trouble today for wearing a hat in class. She is a very fashionable young lady and had a black crocheted berret (she calls it a beanie) on in class. She has been wearing them off and on for two years now and has never had a problem. A boy complained to the principal that she was allowed to wear her hat and he was not allowed to wear his baseball cap. Apparently they looked it up in the code of conduct and it does state that no hats are allowed in class, she was called to the principal's office and asked to remove her hat. She did and stored it in her locker for the day, without a fuss. The boy who brought it to the principals attention razzed her about it all day and she was quite upset when she got home.

I was always taught, and have taught my children, that it is rude for a man to wear a hat indoors but proper for a lady to do so. I know there is a lot of history around why this is so, but for simplicty, I will say it has to do with respect. I'm back in college and I know that no one is allowed to wear baseball caps for tests as answers can be written along the brim. Otherwise ladies are allowed to wear hats or scarves as a fashion accessory. I think this is acceptable. To me there is a big difference between a small hat perched on the back of ones head and a large hat with a brim that covers part of ones face.

As it is school code she will not be wearing her hats in class anymore. Just wondering what other people thing about this issue. Am I being old fashion by thinking and teaching my children it is okay for ladies but not men to wear hats indoors?

Allison

In the land of all people being equal, she has to adhere to the dress code - unless it says only fashionable hats allowed.:thumbsup2

no one could wear hats in school while i was in h.s. If the boys can't the girls shouldn't be able to either. To use outdated dress standards as justification for a modern double standard is both sad and pathetic. You can't pick and choose which outdated gender rules are to be scrapped and which are to be upheld.

go tribe!!!!!!!!
