Ok--I'll bite. What's a doula?

noun
A woman who assists another woman during labor and provides support to her, the infant, and the family after childbirth.

[Modern Greek doula, from Greek dialectal doulā, servant-woman, slave.]

I was interested in that at one point until I learned they are mostly about natural childbirth (from what I'd read anyway) and I was all about the drugs. :hippie: :rotfl2:

doula, noun, a person, usually a woman, who is professionally trained to assist a woman during childbirth and who may provide support to the family after the baby is born.
The biggest difference between a doula and a midwife is that the doula does nothing clinical. Only provides comfort and support to mom and serves as a liason between the parents and the medical staff.

I'm kind of "granola" when it comes to childbirth. I had my last two babies in the water and used hypnobirthing for pain management.

You know I still feel a bad about that. I really wanted to spend time with you all. I missed about 3.5 hours (I think) of valuable park time with the wait time and the actual demonstration.

I promise I'll spend more time with everyone on the next trip (and hopefully the mini-meet).;)

steph
Aww, don't feel bad. That pic of you and Guy was so awesome! :thumbsup2

 LOL We posted at the same time and about as opposite as can be. :rotfl:

I was induced with my first two and a C-section with the twins. I had high blood pressure and I didn't even take those Lamaze classes because I already knew I was going to ask for drugs. Many of them and often. :rotfl2:

Beth, just so you know doulas aren't mostly about natural childbirth, they are mostly about supporting the mother's choices (which can include medication for pain management). I personally assisted mothers who chose to have epidurals, and I supported them 100% in their decision. I would never consider my personal birth plan would be the correct birth plan for another mom. :goodvibes

Oh, that's good to know. It seems like all the things I'd read or learned watching A Baby Story (anyone else watch that show??) they seemed very against drugs or intervention of any sort. Just curious, do you think you'll ever get back into doing that?

Has anyone watched the movie Baby Mama? I thought it was hilarious, in a twisted, silly sort of way. This clip had me busting up!

Completely off topic: Our A/C stopped working yesterday and thankfully the repair man just left and was able to get it working again. Still needs a part replaced, but for now it works. Who woulda thought we'd still have the air on this far into October??? :sad2:

I think the reason that doulas are most often associated with natural child birth is because women who choose to go that route vs. epidural are the ones who truly need the comfort and assistance of a doula. KWIM? I mean, once you've had an epi, you're pretty much a happy camper until the drugs wear off. ;)

I've attended a c-section as well. The mom was planning for a natural delivery, but the baby turned breach the day of delivery and they had to do an emergency c-section. My job was to make sure all other avenues were explored before the mom agreed to the c-section. And then to keep the mom and dad calm during the surgery and talk them through it.

I don't know if I'll ever do more doula work. I've kind of moved on from that place in my life. Now my addiction is vacation planning!!! :hyper: :hyper:

That video is hilarious. I love the lady's lisp. . . what a riot. :rotfl:

Okay here goes. I've spent the past hour or so e-mail back and forth to my boss and have found out........that the trip to Vegas has been cancelled but another trip came up to Ohio (I don't have to go one, thankfully.) Having said that I still can't go on the trip because there will be 4 people out of the office that week and she can't authorize me leave. :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: We have to have at least 1 person on duty and the person that week is going to be me. Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just want to cry.

Well, that's true about the doulas. I know once my drugs kicked in I was finally able to fall asleep and when the doc woke me up to say it was time to go deliver, I was just really ticked off. :rotfl:

Vacation planning is fun and less noisy/messy. LOL

Awwwwwww man! That sucks. I don't know what to say. I'm sorry Steph. And there's absolutely no one else that can be on duty? What if you were sick? :rolleyes1

Oh, you are good! :worship: Have you heard of ChaCha? ;)

Why yes, I have. That would be the exciting syncopated latin dance, that originated in the 1950's as a slowed-down Mambo. During the 1950's, the Cha Cha was made famous by many Latino bands such as Xavier Cugat and Prez Prado. Cuban in origin, the Cha Cha rhythm is found in the much of today's popular music.

However, I suck at dancing and at ChaCha. ;) :rotfl:

We only have 5 of us in our office and with 4 gone...well I'm all that's left. If I were sick that would be different but then I'd have to go to the clinic and put on quarters (be confined to my home for the amount of time set by doc). I made sure to mention to her that I am not moving my leave in March unless it's a national emergency and she understood my point.

Well, we sure will miss you. And I'm glad you made sure to tell them about March. Otherwise we'd have to kidnap you! No way you are missing that one.

I'm sorry, but that is definitely over your 160-character limit. Your accuracy rating just went down. ;)

Clippings? There's no room for stinkin clippings! :teacher:

Steph, I'm so bummed you can't make it. :guilty: At least you don't have to travel. . . (tryin to look on the bright side here). :goodvibes

Oh Cheryl, love the pix!!!:dance3:
You guys look like you had fun, can't wait for our get together in eleven days!:cutie: :cutie:

Yeah, I know it's over, but I'm a rebel. :cool2:

Cheryl! Great pics!!! I love it! I cannot wait to be there. Thanks for posting some.

Do you use photobucket? When you are in the album you want to share, there are some choices up along the top that say things like albums and upload, slideshows, edit images, remix, scrapbooks, etc. There should be an option to share. Click on that and scroll down. A link should show up that you can copy and paste. Then when you post it, anyone can click on that link and see all the pics held in that particular album.

Does that make sense? LOL Make sure there are no pics you don't want to anyone to see. ;)

Oh, and I think you have to set up a guest password for people to use, one that's different from yours of course. It's kind of a hassle, but it's the only way I know to do it, if you want to share an entire album. Maybe someone else knows an easier way.

Cheryl, where did you guys get those pumpkin lanyards you all are wearing? So cute!
