Hey all.....I htought I'd just pop on really quick. I am sooo miserable. I went to the doctor's this morning, and I have a very bad case of mono. I'm sooo sick.

I had a great time and wish I could talk with you all, but I feel like I've been run over by a truck. My neck/throat is so swollen, I can't talk.

Talk with you later! I really enjoyed meeting you all.

Gosh I'm sorry to hear that. I had mono a year ago, really bad. I was out of work for almost 3 weeks and it took months for me to feel better. I could barely function. The throat pain is unlike any sore throat you've ever experienced. Unfortunately, it's something that really just has to run it's course. It's a tough illness to deal with because your energy level is the pitts. I had enough energy to walk from the couch to the bathroom, that was really pushing it. The worst part about it...is it doesn't just last a few weeks.....it literally lasts for months. I'm sure your dr already told you about the enlarged liver so no sports etc for up to 6 months. No alcohol etc. I hadn't felt good for about a week before I had the blood test confirming I had it. Nobody else that had been around me got it......not even Ayden or Chris and I had kissed them before the blood test. My dr told me, once you have it, you'll always be a carrier, but rare to get it again. Since I kissed DBF, it's very possible he's a carrier now and years down the road the antibodies could become active and he could come down with it. I hope not. Anyway....I just feel so bad for you because I know how tough that illness is as an adult. Get lots and lots of rest and drink all the fluids you can. Sometimes a hot washcloth across my neck helped a little with the pain. Get well soon. :flower3:

Looking at the list of people who were there, I'm sad that I didn't really get to do anything with some of the ladies, like Cristabel, Michelle, Jen, Sarah & her mom, Capri, Molly, Dawn & her mom, Kelly & her mom, Becci, Theresa ... even though we did pictures together or were at the same place at the same time, it still doesn't seem like we had enough time to really get to know each other. Next year, we should go for a WEEK!! But I would definitely have to get more sleep!!

I didn't know you were coming down during the mini meet! Cool!:yay:

I was going to go Halloween wknd, but its not my wknd & saw that there was a mini meet. So I thought what the heck. Now I need to get an entertainment book & tickets for the kiddos.
I am very, very excited!!:cool1:

Yay!!! It will be fun to meet the kids!

Oh, Heather, I'm so sorry to hear you have mono. I hope you have a good recovery. I got it in college. One thing I want to tell you, although maybe you know - when the doctor at ucla dx'd me, I cried. I'm so not a cryer (like, once a year at a very sad movie). He got all huffy, said, it's just mono (you fool).

Later I read that depression and/or high emotions can go hand in hand with mono. But of course that gruff doctor must have missed that day at med school.

Please take care. Everyone has to be good to you at home! :rose: :rose: :rose: :daisy: :daisy: :daisy:

Wow, you all sure know how to make a sick girl feel bad! ;) I knew I had a touch of a cold, and so was very careful not eat others' food, or share anything 'spit'.

I'm sorry I've scared you all so much, and I really don't think I did anything with you all to make you sick.

I feel like such a leper now. :sad1:

I've actually had epstein barr before.

I was NOT feeling like this on the trip. In fact on the trip, I thought I was getting better until I got to the airport. That's when things started setting in.

I'm sorry I scared you all, and I hope you don't get sick.

I'm sorry I came sick, but it was just a little nasal drainage and cough on the trip.

Take care everyone.

Looks like some people have been blinging up their Photopass pictures. Keep it going!! Theresa, you bought the picture at Ariel's, right? I haven't seen that one come up yet. Did it work? And the Segway pictures, my card didn't have any on it, and maybe I didn't have them scan mine, but I think someone did... Let me know if it worked.

I've noticed some of the pictures are dark, and others look like they're missing the extra magic that gets added later. Let me know if any of yours have that problem and I can email about it and hopefully get them fixed.

Can someone please PM me the login info for our Shutterfly account. I somehow managed to delete the PM with all that info. :sad2:

I need to add my pix to the Photo Pass account. Hopefully after dinner tonight.

Jenn, I would love to do the walk with you but DD & I booked our free DVC cruise over Labor Day weekend. I am trying to minimize the days I take off of work. Sorry:confused:

Heather, you feel better real soon. I noticed you sounded pretty sick Sunday night - I sat next to you during the fireworks. Pixie Dust your way girlfriend.

One last thought for now...Sarah & Trudi, you were the best teammates for the hunt, thank you again for our badges. I thought we kicked butt, but apparently we only did so-so. You guys were so much fun, you are so cute and your mom is so sweet.:flower3: Peter Pan's Posse will be back with a vengance next year!:woohoo:

...I have a very bad case of mono. I'm sooo sick.

Oh you poor thing!

I found this good info by googling...it's from a college website's student health page:

Mononucleosis

You wake up and find that you have the worst sore throat you’ve ever had. Your neck glands seem very swollen and a feverish headache is making you miserable. Your doctor tells you there is a good chance that you have infectious mononucleosis, or mono, as most people call it.

Infectious mononucleosis is caused by a virus that infects lymph cells in the blood, lymph glands, the liver and the spleen. It occurs most commonly among adolescents and young adults, aged 15-25; and early fall and spring are the periods of greatest frequency of the disease among university students.

The incubation period for mono is still unknown but some of the most common symptoms include:

For a period of 1-2 weeks, you may experience fatigue, general malaise and lack of appetite.

Fever and sore throat.

Swollen glands, or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck may develop. In addition, you may develop an enlarged spleen (an organ which lies just below and under the left lower rib).

Infrequently, jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin) may occur.

The acute phase of mono lasts for 2-3 weeks in most cases, after which recovery usually occurs rapidly. However, it is not uncommon for some degree of lethargy to persist for 2-3 months after the acute symptoms have abated.

Transmission of Mono
The mono virus is present in saliva and is transmitted through intimate oral contact, such as kissing or sharing a straw; it is not airborne. However, contrary to popular belief, mono is not very contagious. You are no more likely to contract mono from your roommates than from the general population.

Treating Mono
Since infectious mononucleosis is a viral illness, there is no specific treatment, however it is possible to relieve some of the symptoms:

* Bed rest is advisable when fever is present. You will get better on your own without the help of medication.
* Aspirin or Tylenol is usually sufficient to control headaches and discomfort.
* Gargling with salt water (1 teaspoon of salt to 1 pint of water) relieves symptoms of sore throat.
* Avoid excessive physical exertion and contact sports during the first 3 weeks, especially if there is enlargement of the spleen.
* Cortisone derivatives may be prescribed in cases where there is excessive sore throat and swelling of tonsils. However, they do not seem to help the fatigue that accompanies mono.
* Antibiotics will be prescribed if you have a coincidental streptococcal infection of the throat (strep throat).
* Avoid alcohol if there is evidence of liver involvement.

Reinfection
Reinfection has been documented, but it is extremely rare; for practical purposes, infectious mononucleosis confers immunity to subsequent attacks. Blood donation should be avoided for about 6 months to avoid passing on the infection through your white blood cells.

If you think you have mono, come to Student Health Services or go to your family doctor to have a diagnosis made. Laboratory tests such as a “blood count”, a mono test, and sometimes a throat culture may be performed. However, the test may not show a positive result right away; therefore, if symptoms persists after 7-10 days, you should return to your doctor for further examination.

I just realized I never made it to see the new Pixie Hollow area. I wanted to, and then totally forgot all about it while I was there. Oh well. Something for next time. Did anyone else make it in there?

Alas, I did not. I also didn't make it onto IASW, which I only realized yesterday, and cannot believe I missed it. It's a forever-fave ride, I adore it, and I was curious about the stuff they added. I thought I was going to be all about the rides, but then I just wasn't interested...very odd.

I just realized, when I saw the pix from BillyHill, that you were the one asking about Leland...how slow am I?

And although I don't think I could swing a week trip alone, I think having a longer trip is a good idea, b/c you can take it easy, have solid time to do your own thing or play with your family that you brought along, or play with whatever group just randomly formed....etc etc.

And yes, more sleep. Of course, as Cheryl would tell you, I'm a wee bit talkative as the hours go into the early morning. So duct tape, I'm sure, will be on her packing list if we're roomies again.

and someone (Deb?) wanted the name of the wine at Wine Country Trattoria:

It's Magicale, Brachetto, PIemonte DOC NV

and it's wonderful. I read a review by Michael Jordan, the Disney sommelier, and he said it was like "love in a bottle" and suggested it be consumed with chocolate and berries.

So if I get that I don't need my DBF anymore?

I was a good girl **cough**. I never had mono...

Naughty, Naughty  Capri...:rotfl:

You were just lucky Deb.

I just realized I never made it to see the new Pixie Hollow area. I wanted to, and then totally forgot all about it while I was there. Oh well. Something for next time. Did anyone else make it in there?

I had planned to make it over there, but never did. Will have to do it next time as well.

OK, I think we're going to have to have Beth own the list, because she's the only one that can edit our first 12 pages of info.

But here's a starter list to work from:

1/2 marathon:
grizbuzz (confirmed)
Stephanie
Motoprincess

5k
Beth (soon to be confirmed)
Jane
MaryJo
Stacerita
Wendy
Molly
Califgirl
Dangermouse (if we can get her into the park)
Capri (if we can get her DH to get her plane tickets)

Where's Linda and Briana? Amy?
I know we have more ladies out there who want to join us!

Any more takers?
Exercise programs start early next week. I'll let you lick your DL wounds for a few more days. ;)
:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

So are you gonna be the exercise nazi?

3 weeks isn't that bad. I unfortunately was out of work from Thanksgiving until after Valentine's day the year I got mono. It was horrible. Plus since I was so weak, I caught Hep A at the same time. Ain't I lucky.

Looks like some people have been blinging up their Photopass pictures. Keep it going!! Theresa, you bought the picture at Ariel's, right? I haven't seen that one come up yet. Did it work? Is that a challange?

Just found this about mono on the University of Maryland Medical Center website, in case it's of use to anyone. :)

Complementary and Alternative Therapies

Several studies report that stress and relaxation affect our immune systems. Stress can make your body more susceptible to infection. Steps that reduce stress may help prevent infection with viruses such as EBV.

There is some evidence that nutrition and plant-based medicines may help reduce the long-term effects of EBV infection and complications linked to EBV.

Always tell your doctor about the herbs and supplements you are using or considering using.
Nutrition and Supplements

These nutritional tips may help reduce symptoms:

* Eat more antioxidant-rich foods (such as green, leafy vegetables and peppers) and fruits (such as blueberries, tomatoes, and cherries).
* Avoid refined foods, such as white breads, pastas, and sugar.
* Eat fewer red meats and more lean meats, cold-water fish, tofu (soy, if no allergy) or beans for protein.
* Use healthy cooking oils, such as olive oil or vegetable oil.
* Reduce or eliminate trans fatty acids, found in commercially baked goods such as cookies, crackers, cakes, French fries, onion rings, donuts, processed foods, and margarine.
* Avoid coffee and other stimulants, alcohol, and tobacco.
* Drink plenty of filtered water daily.
* Gargling with warm salt water may help soothe a sore throat.

These supplements may also help:

* Omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish oil, 1 - 2 capsules or 1 tablespoonful oil two to three times daily, to help decrease inflammation and improve immunity. Cold-water fish, such as salmon or halibut, are good sources. People who take blood-thinning medications such as warfarin (Coumadin) should talk to their doctor before taking fish oil.
* Probiotic supplement (containing Lactobacillus acidophilus ), 5 - 10 billion CFUs (colony forming units) a day, for gastrointestinal and immune health. Taking antibiotics, in particular, can upset the balance between good and bad bacteria in your gut. Taking probiotics, of “friendly” bacteria, may help restore the right balance.

Herbs

The use of herbs is a time-honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. Herbs, however, can trigger side effects and can interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, herbs should be taken with care, under the supervision of your health care provider. You may use herbs as dried extracts (capsules, powders, teas), glycerites (glycerine extracts), or tinctures (alcohol extracts). Unless otherwise indicated, you should make teas with 1 tsp. herb per cup of hot water. Steep covered 5 - 10 minutes for leaf or flowers, and 10 - 20 minutes for roots. Drink 2 - 4 cups per day. You may use tinctures alone or in combination as noted.

The following herbs have not been studied for treating mono, but are sometimes suggested because they strengthen the immune system:

* Green tea (Camellia sinensis) standardized extract, 250 - 500 mg daily, for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune effects. Use caffeine-free products. You may also prepare teas from the leaf of this herb.
* Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) 900 mg per day, for 5 – 7 days, to strengthen the immune system. Do not give echinacea to a child without talking to your doctor first.
* Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) has not been studied for mono, but it does seem to have anti-viral properties, at least in test tube studies. It isn’t known whether it would work against the Epstein-Barr virus. People who take anticoagulants (blood-thinners), diuretics (water pills), or medication for high blood pressure or medication to lower blood sugar should not take astragalus without talking to their doctor first.
* Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), from 15 - 30mL of unsweetened 100% cranberry juice each day or one to five 300 - 400mg capsules of juice extract two times per day 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Cranberry appears to have antiviral properties, although no one knows whether it is effective against the Epstein-Barr virus.

Homeopathy

Few studies have examined the effectiveness of specific homeopathic remedies. A professional homeopath, however, may recommend one or more of the following treatments for mono based on his or her knowledge and clinical experience. Before prescribing a remedy, homeopaths take into account a person’s constitutional type -- your physical, emotional, and intellectual makeup. An experienced homeopath assesses all of these factors when determining the most appropriate remedy for a particular individual.

The following remedies may be effective for fever related to EBV:

* Belladonna -- for early stages of mononucleosis with sudden onset of fever
* Ferrum phosphoricum -- for individuals with the early stages of a fever accompanied by a painful cough and sore chest
* Kali muriaticum -- typically used for individuals with extremely swollen tonsils, but may also be useful for treating infectious mononucleosis when administered in conjunction with Ferrum phosphoricum

Professional homeopaths may also recommend the following remedies:

* Mercurius -- for individuals with a fever accompanied by profuse sweating, alternating hot and cold body temperature, weakness in the limbs and painful, aching bones, a bluish-red throat with a constant desire to swallow, excessive salivation, teeth marks around the edges of a swollen tongue, and tremendous thirst
* Phytolacca -- for pain caused by throat inflammation that radiates to the ears upon swallowing

Other helpful remedies include Lachesis, Conium, Hepar sulphuricum, and Baryta carbonica.

Research also suggests that a combination of homeopathy and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) may effectively improve symptoms of mononucleosis. The most common homeopathic remedies used with TCM include Lycopodium, Silicea, Phosphorous, Sulphur, Mercurius, Nux vomica, Sepia, and Pulsatilla.
Acupuncture

Although no scientific studies have reviewed the use of acupuncture for mono, it may help to reduce symptoms, to improve immune function, and to relieve congestion (blockage of qi, or energy flow) of the liver, spleen, and lymph.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Studies have reported that people with Epstein-Barr virus experience an improvement in symptoms when given a combination of homeopathic remedies noted in the section on homeopathy and TCM remedies including Atractylodes alba, Glycyrrhiza recens, Rehmannia preparata, Bupleurum, Cortex magnolia, Phragmites, Belamcanda, Sophora, subprostrata, Siler, Angelica dahurica, Paeonia alba, Dendrobium, Polygonatum officinal, and Cnidium.

Gracious...just thinking about it all is making me think I have a sore throat. :rotfl:

I remember in chiro school you could tell what we were studying, b/c half of us would think we had it. I read a book about Harvard medical students, and it's a very common syndrome, while in school like that, to self-diagnose with ALL sorts of things. We had a class that was "[something yucky], Arthritis, and STDs" and that was a very very LONG quarter to get through. :headache:

And yes, more sleep. Of course, as Cheryl would tell you, I'm a wee bit talkative as the hours go into the early morning. So duct tape, I'm sure, will be on her packing list if we're roomies again.

Same in our room. It seemed as soon as we all got in there into our jammies and heads starting hitting the pillows, we all wanted to chat and giggle. Silly girls!

Ok, time for me to get back to class. I have a quiz in about 30 seconds that I need to take. Talk to you ladies later.

I am hoping to get my pics on there today or tomorrow. I thought everyone got a photopass card of the Segway pix in there picture folder.

I thought so too, but when I put in the card number, it said there were no pictures on it. I'll wait and see if they show up, or maybe one of the other cards will have them.

I never had mono. Anything that happens in Norwalk High stays there so not telling how good I was if at all.

I am munching on candy from my bag of candy. If not for my knees I would love to join an exercise group and get help loosing that weight but right now the thought of the weight gain is stressing me so bad that I need more chocolates. HERSHEY'S aka mother's remedy for everything that ails you.

The only thin on my calendar is seeing Vocal Majority on the weekend of the $th of July. I cancelled my NH trip for them, ooh they are so good and champions many times.

So far so good and none of those cooties that some divas seem to have taken home. See chocolate does the body good and I am germ free because of the chocolate.:cloud9: :rolleyes1

DL DIS LADIES, the pictures are wonderful!! :yay: The mini trippie's posted are awesome!!! :yay: Sounds like absolutely everyone had an awesome time in DL!!! :mickeyjum

I was at DL with my family on Friday afternoon until midnight as it was my birthday :cake: but I did not see any groups of ladies!!! :sad1: I was hoping to and then I was going to say :wave2: Howdy Doody!!

.
.

Momrek it was my birthday as well on Friday! so happy belated birthday to ya!
