*Girls DL Trip* OLD THREAD

Molly (and others)
Mike is looking at going back to meat cutting (he was a journeyman meat cutter for years)....its great pay if he can get in somewhere. Fred Meyer & Safeway are both hiring meat cutters in that area now, so hopefully one of them will call.

I think our biggest obstacle right now is the economy. Jobs are tight & lots of people looking....... Just looking for a spark to get this fire going!

Thanx everyone

I was not expecting "meat cutter"! :) Well, since those stores are looking, then they are looking to hire someone! What about Costco; are they looking for such a position as well? I've heard they are good to their employees.

Something Robert noticed is that while there are lots of people looking, there are also lots of people who don't seem to be *serious* about it. When his dept of 15 was closed, he did interview after interview, tweaking the things in his resume for each one. Others just sent out the same info, didn't know much, didn't DO much. They seemed content to just get a job when they got a job. Hubby feels very strongly that the fact that I'm at home, and me going to work wouldn't do all that much for us (though I could, and right before he got the contract position at m'soft he's in right now, I started to look), caused his drive, his "fire", to get a job. He must have tried for 15 different positions, just inside of Amazon (the company that closed his dept), while his co-workers *maybe* applied for 5 each. The first person that got a position had a similar "fire", in that he was over 50 and was running scared.

But really, the others were officially looking, but they weren't *really* looking.

So hopefully he'll be up against people who aren't *really* looking, just like Robert's co-workers (more than half of whom still aren't employed, and aren't freaked out by it!).

Hey Molly! Great to see you! How're things going?

Glenn is at the 3rd job interview for this place he wants to work. The interview started almost 2 hours and I haven't heard from him. As soon as it hits the 2 hour mark I am calling! Hope things went well!

Sarah

Ah yes, the 2 hour interview...Robert had a few of those! Just a week ago he had 4 hours of interviews...I hope that your hubby's interviews go as well as Robert's did! He is now the pawn in a battle between two Seattle mega-companies, poor poor dude. princess::cheer2:

I hope your hubby gets the same sort of call that Robert got.:goodvibes

As for how things are going, E and I spent 15 lovely days in San Diego at my brother's place, plus 3 partial days at DLR, my sister in law spoiled E rotten, E learned to swim...Robert, as I just mentioned, will probably find out tomorrow if his contract job is going to turn into a proper job or if he's going back to a proper job with his old company (both companies are fully apprised of the situation, I'm not talking out of turn)....we found out that our insurance (currently being continued by COBRA) won't pay for the HCG Robert's endo prescribed, but they do cover the cabergoline for the prolactinoma, and he's feeling changes already after 3 doses (half a pill once a week). For instance, he's growing more facial hair...which makes sense, now that the prolactin is likely leaving his system! Poor guy.

Things are going well. We hope to join the Y soon, as I re-found my love of swimming, and since the Y uses the nicer salt water treatment (like my brother uses in his pool) rather than the chlorine it won't trigger my asthma. etc etc.

Hopefully our luck will rub off on those job-seekers!:wizard::wizard:

Oh, and now we're probably moving to a less expensive place just to give breathing room in the wallet. And just tonight, while looking at a house that just won't do, we (happy, diehard, philosophically-based, renters) had the first twinges of "this would be a place you'd buy and fix up, not rent and just leave the same"...that's the first time we've felt THAT!

Good luck to all who are searching for employment. :thumbsup2

I'm not "actively" searching right now because I'll be moving to Orange Country in 42 days. The places that are hiring in my valley are being very conservative and looking for the people who see themselves at the company for 1+ years, not 1 month. I was lucky enough to get weekend shifts this entire month (which still only equals 34 hours) from my city job.

I really can't wait until I get my student loans because then I won't have to worry about school, food, rent etc. Of course I will have to pay back about $30k after I graduate but I plan on having a steady, well-paying job by the time or not long after I graduate.

Wanted to wish everyone a good morning!!!

Up early & couldn't sleep......best time in my house......all's quiet! :thumbsup2

Have a great day......may all your wishes come true :wizard:

Good morning senoritas! I'm up and at work early today. Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

I'm lovin the nice cool weather of the last few days, but did enjoy the sunshine on the weekend.
You'll get LOTS of sunshine when your here. ;)

Just checkin' in for a quickie with my peeps! :wave2: :yay: :wave2:
Oooo, a quickie!

I was up early too. 6:30. Ugh. I decided to make myself useful and did some cleaning. Now I'm ready for a nap. lol

Morning all you wonderful Divas!! Happy Hump Day!!!! :cool1:

Morning all.

Lot's of people on here yesterday that I haven't seen in awhile.

Hi Capri and January!! :)

Congrats January on graduating that is great news and good luck on your new endeavor of your Bachelors!!

Laurie I know how tough it is trying to start new careers. Shane is in the process of doing that now. He is a journeyman tile setter and with the economy things have been UGLY for the last probably 5 or 6 years! We not only haven't gotten a raise in that time he has gotten pay CUTS in the last few years. This past year he got a 6 dollar one! That hurts!

He finally has talked to a buddy and he is currently going to school to become an electrician. He wants to open his own business though and that makes me nervous in this economy. We tried doing our own tile business when he came back from Iraq and it didn't go over too well. We did ok but with the self employment tax and having to pay the independant contractors that worked for us we barely broke even.

This time he is going through the VA because he is a disabled Vet and that is the class he was at yesterday. They are supposedly going to help him with his schooling and such so I hope it works out this time!

Plus we get some money every month for him being disabled but they told him he needs to go back and get his rating raised because it is pretty low and it should be higher for his injury. I know that will be a LONG process though as it was LONG the first time but I guess it is worth it if it works out.

Anyway then after he got back yesterday we got a call from Lynn. Just like I thought her "boyfriend" kicked her out. SOOOO she is coming back to stay with us. Needless to say we are not thrilled by this proposition. I know this may seem hard for some of you to understand but when she was living here before it was EXTREMELY disruptive. She refused to abide by the rules and was sneaking out of the house constantly, refused to listen and was just unruly. For those of you that may remember I pretty much had a breakdown in January because of what went on between her and I and I am NOT looking forward to having her here again. When she was here before I got NO sleep because of worrying about what she was doing and it is just NOT a good situation. We have decided we are going to give her an ultimatimatum but honestly I don't know if that will work. She has been on this path for so long and don't know if she can change at this point. She has basically been out on her own getting away with whatever she wants for months now and she is NOT going to want to abide by our rules. I have been completely stressed out since I found out that she was coming back. We have decided that we are going to tell her that she HAS to abide by the rules of our home or she is no longer welcome here and she will have to leave. She has alienated EVERYONE else in our family and has NO ONE left that will take her in. My parents don't want her and neither do Shane's now. Not to mention any other extended family. Her mother is nowhere to be found and so it is us or the streets. She is going to HAVE to get along and toe the line or be homeless. Plus we go back to the probation court on Tues and she will find out her fate then. That probation officer is NOT going to be happy with her either. She told her do NOT get kicked out of your grandmother's house. She said she did NOT want to see her case come back across her desk because that meant she got in MORE trouble. So I don't know WHAT is going to happen with that. But perhaps it will give her a wake up call that if she DOES choose to break the rules there will be consequences this time.

She thinks she can come here and just stay with us long enough to get a full time job and then get herself an apartment but it is simply NOT that simple. She has only had ONE job for 5 months and she can't use that for a reference because when she ran away twice they got sick of it and now gave her a bad reference when she tried to use them. She is under 18 so EVEN if she manages to find a job in this economy I don't know of any place that would rent to her with NO credit history etc. We are going to try to convince her to join the military. It might be her best bet and she can get money for college and learn some much needed discipline at the same time. Both Shane and I were in it and it is a great place to learn respect and discipline and job skills. Plus you get money for school. So we shall see.

Anyway I am off to my GI apt today so hopefully it goes well. I can tell you I am a nervous wreck with all that is going on.

Hope everyone ELSE has a good day. :)

Ugh Kelly.....do you have to take Lynn in?? I know that sounds mean...but when do you finally say "enoughs enough"??!! I pray for your sanity!!!

Its funny about the "career" thing...... Mike started at Albertsons when our first son was born & started in the bakery, moved to the Butcher Block & then into an apprentice meatcutter. He worked his way up to a journeyman meatcutter. He was miserable & wanted to go back to school. So we moved into my mom's garage with our 3 boys so he could become a paramedic. We moved to his hometown & he worked for almost 10 yrs & then he "started hanging out with a 21yr old girl" so we couldn't stay anymore. He found a great paying paramedic job in the town we're in now. He got fired during his probation time. They told him he wasn't "a fit" for the company....bottom line was they were able to hire 3 newbies fresh out of school for what they were paying him. At that point he said he was done with being a paramedic....he actually lasted twice as long as the "norm" for paramedics & burn-out. So eventually he found a job working at Harry & David's (the pear place....some of you might have heard of it). He works making the MooseMunch popcorn. Not a career by any means & the pay totally sucks. He makes less than half of his previous jobs.....hit hard to our finances. But I do have to say, he's much happier.
Unfortunately, with this job comes a lot of lay-offs. Mike (and our son) we're laid off 3 weeks before Christmas & just started back end of April. Since then, they've had 2 weeks of lay-offs. We can't afford that & we have to find something a bit more stable.
I know he wants to go back to school to get a nursing degree, but not sure we could afford to do this on our own (even with financial aid & such). His dream job would be at a hospital with them paying for his schooling. We will see. Starting a 3rd career at 48 is a bit scary.

Ok, enough of that........ what's everyone else doing today?

I feel for you. Shane is only 36 but I am 42 and I have already been through it before. I was married for 8 years to my first husband and have owned two homes and then when I got divorced was forced to go through Bankruptcy because he decided not to pay his half of the bills that the judge awarded him because they were in MY name. I couldn't do it all by myself and when Shane and I got married he made minimum wage. So there I was 9 months pg and bankrupt! We have slowly got our credit back and he now is a journeyman but a lot of good it does when his union is jerking him around. He works really hard but with the economy and everything else it doesn't matter HOW hard he has worked.

As far as Lynn is concerned. I am at the end of my rope. Technically we are responsible for her till she is 18 which is in Feb but I just don't know if I can deal with her anymore. She refuses to listen and just does whatever she pleases. My psychiatrist truly believes she is bipolar based on everything I have told him about how she is acting and we even tried to get her into therapy when she was brought home the LAST time but she refused and unless she appears to be a threat to herself or others they won't treat her. So it is a REAL problem. Before she ran away in Jan she was sneaking out every single night almost, drinking, drugs, being brought home by the police but not doing anything bad enough to end up in juvey although this time she WILL be on probation. I am thinking that the foster care may be our only resort if she refuses to listen. NO ONE in our family will take her.

Anyway I have to run to my doc apt but thanks for listening. :)

I hope everything works out for you!

Good morning all!

I know what you guys mean about the whole finding work situation. DBF has been out of work since Feb. 2006 due to a car accident. 2 shoulder surgeries and 3 years of physical therapy later he can finally go back to work but there's nothing. He's a commercial electrician. He's been applying everywhere even places like Wal-Mart but we haven't heard anything.

Darn Recession!:sad2:
I think one would be hard pressed to find a family that hasn't been touched by the recession. Either directly or through a family member or friend, the recession is wide reaching.

Thank you!! I could use a little Disney magic today. An escape from the reality that is taking over right now.

Not to depress anyone, but I got my mammo results back today. Not that I understand any of what was said to me.
They found fibroid glandular density (or something like that) in both breasts and an asymmetrical nodular area. What that means, I have no clue but it's freaking me out. All I know is they want me to go back for spot compressions and an ultrasound.
I was so upset I started crying on the phone like an idiot. Especially when she started giving me names and numbers of breast surgeons to contact.

My mom had breast cancer and this has just got me all upset. I am only posting this because it's all new to me and if any of you understand any of this or have been through anything like it, please shoot me a PM. I'd really appreciate any info or advice.
Thanks. :grouphug:

Kelly... here are a couple of links they are wonderful groups who help children and families at risk.

That would be great help for Lynn.

I did some searching and I found fibroglandular density. On Net Wellness, a person had the same question and it was answered by Jean Stevens, MD and the director of Metrohealth Medical Breast Clinic. She says "Fibroglandular tissue is normal breast tissue for a young person. It exists because of your monthly hormonal cycling. It will become replaced with fatty tissue when you go through menopause. It does not increase your risk of breast cancer. If a person has breast cancer, the cancer is harder to see on a mammogram when fibroglandular tissue is also present because both are white on this xray(mammo) (the cancer is a white object on mammogram and it is hard to see on the white background of fibroglandular tissue)."

The Blue Shield website it says "Dense breast tissue on a mammogram can be described with several terms, including dense tissue, fibrous changes, or apparently in your case, a density presumably composed of fibrous and glandular tissues. The difficulty arises in interpreting the cause of dense white breast tissue on a mammogram because cancer can also appear as a white area."

Beth, with all that said, I don't want you to freak out just yet because it may very well be nothing.

I am praying hard for you, though! I will also add you to my prayer requests at church bible study tonight.

Beth: I just PM'd you too!

Afternoon Ladies! :wave2:
I hope you all are having an awesome summer!:beach: Can't believe how fast it is going. I apologize for not getting on the DIS more often - things are busy with kids out of school. Thankfully I can keep up with some of you through FB! (Which is easier to do than the DIS on my iPhone!)
Beth - you will be in my prayers and please try not to worry. You have motivated me to make an appointment for a check-up. Haven't been to the Dr. in over two years now!

I didn't have time to read back. Hopefully I didn't miss any planning. :)

Nope--not too much. I imagine once this busy summer is over (busy for me too!) that the planning will get in full swing!
