Well we used to like the same things and have a lot in common but now we like totally different things and I dunno how to tell her without her getting upset.

Well if you don't want to be her friend anymore, what I would do is just casually hang out with her less and other friends more, and she will do the same.

I've dealt with a very clingy friend before. It ended ugly though. I don't know how much help I'll be, but I'll try my best.

My old friend sounds EXACTLY like your friend. I tried to slowly create distance between us, but she would freak out and be like, " I know you hate me, so whatever." and stuff like that. Then I would feel bad and insist that we're still good friends. It's a nasty cycle you're stuck in.

Probably your best bet is to slowly create some distance, like you've been doing. But when she freaks out tell her camly and nicely that you think that you two have changed this summer and you don't really have that much in common anymore.

Best of luck! Clingy friends are really tricky.
