Girl scout cookie booth

I'm a fan of the philosophy that "There's no bad weather, just bad clothing." Make sure the girls are bundled up and have fun!

For as little as the troop gets from each box, no. That is coming from a brownie mom/co leader.

Really? It is basically THE Girl Scout fundraiser for the year. It is in THE prime location. We sell an amazing number of cookies at our Wal Mart booth sale. It is a tough location to get since there are so many troops vying for a spot there. Girls clamor to take their turn at that booth. I can't imagine not going. Plus the more boxes your troop sells, the more the troop gets per box.

And the 20's is not really all that cold, especially if it is sunny. My kids would play outside for hours in 20 degree weather.

Do your kids play outside in that weather? Do they go sledding for over an hour outside? Do they play any sports that require them to be outside? I know quite a few football games and even baseball games that were first thing in the morning and it was downright frigid.

Bundle them up and bring hot chocolate. Little girls dont get sick from being out in the cold.

Cute, polite Girl Scouts + Cold Temps = LOTS of cookies sold.

Make sure that everyone is dressed in layers. You should be fine.

Cold weather will NOT make you sick. Germs, viruses, etc will make you sick.

DD's troop had two four hour booths in weather colder than that (single digits for one and teens for the other and windy both days), and the warm one was temps in the mid twenties. We just had bad luck this year with the timing. With only 7 girls in the troop, and other commitments the girls who could make it were mostly outside the whole four hours except for short warm up breaks. I was out there for the whole time for two booths helping too. We bundled up and did it. I'd love it if cookies were sold in the fall before the weather gets so cold, but since that isn't the way it is we just always expect to have to bundle and cope with cold.

Way to support your troop and set an example...it's too cold so let's just bail. By signing up for a booth, you are taking time and the location from another troop. It's rude to not show up unless your child is sick.

As for the booth, yes we would go. We start booths this weekend too and we go prepared. We will be at a Kmart from 2-6 and I'll have DD in layers (including her ski bibs if it is cold enough). The troop has invested in propane heaters and thermos that we keep filled with cocoa. Our girls love booth sales and they are there for their schedule no matter the weather.

ITA! Walmart and Sam's in our area will no longer allow booths for various reasons, one of which was no shows. We beg them every year, and when and if, they ever say yes again, our council will have to hold a lottery for 2 hour slots. We already hold lotteries for spots at Lowe's and Old Navy.

So don't take these booths lightly, because places can refuse to allow them and then it makes sales real hard!

Ouch. It would hurt if we lost Sams or Walmart. They are not our top locations for popcorn (on a per hour basis, we do better at the homecoming tailgate, and we had one grocery location this year that was just phenomenal), but if we lost Walmart/Sams, it would put a serious dent in our sales.

To those who worry about the weather - if your troop doesn't want that spot, I imagine that there are at least a couple in your area that would gladly take it!

Target and local grocery stores won't allow it either. So we are literally stuck with just Old Navy, Kmart, Lowe's, a couple of locally owned small businesses, an annual kids consignment sale and a few restaurants. That makes for slim pickings when you've got 100+ troops needing booths. I am a SU Cookie Manger and we tell our troop leaders and cookie moms every year to please show up and behave so we don't lose more locations.

Thanks everyone, We will bundle up and have a good time :) I'm don't know for sure but I believe we get like a dollar a box profit. Which is good I think

There was almost an all out brawl last year among leaders about the Wal-Mart booth sale slots. Now the "Community" (SU) schedules all booth sales to makes sure that all troops get a chance. We got Wal-Mart twice, a local grocery store twice and the local college dining hall. We are not complaining.

Pre-sales were dismal for our troop so we are really counting on booth sales.

Girl Scouts....don't they selling cookies to raise money for things like their camping trip in the snow and summer camp where they camp out in the rain, and try not to get eaten by mosquitos?

When my daughter was a Girl Scout she spent a holiday weekend soaking wet in a tent for 3 days. Cookie sales for an hour shouldn't be enough to phase a Girl Scout.

Hahahahahaha!!!!!:rotfl:

Sorry, I live in Michigan! When I was their age my parents bundled me up and sent me out skiing for the day with a group of other kids in -30F temperatures. Their concession to the extremely cold temps that day was that I had to wear a ski mask.

Are you talking about not letting ANY girls stand outside in high 20;s weather for an hour, or just calling and saying YOUR girl can't be outside for an hour?

I don't see a problem with a kid being outside for an hour. What's the limit...it's ok if it's high 30's, or 40's.

If it were going to be in the 90's would that be too hot for your girl to be outside for an hour?

I just don't see the prob.

thanks for you concern, We are going to go and just really bundle up :)

yes, I would... and I have. For 2 hour shifts, not just 1 hour.

A few tips:
- take a thermos of hot chocolate. Or support your local grocery store and buy a hot cocoa from inside (also allows a girl to get warm to walk in and get).

- when you set up the table, break down some boxes and stand on them. They are much warmer than the cold cement.

- dress warm! long underwear, turtlenecks, hat, etc. + boots!

- get those $2 hand warmers for hands and feet.

- If people say 'no thank you', remind them that they can buy for the troops also. We sold over 25 boxes last weekend that were to be donated to the troops.

- put a smile on and think warm.

you'll do great.

We get 60 cents per box if you sell 1 box or 10,000 boxes--the amount never goes up the more you sell.

Interesting how different councils do it differently. Our take per box depends on the average boxes sold per girl.
