DSs have each been invited to a girl's birthday party. Having only sons and nephews, I am lost as to what to buy girls. One girl is turning 6 (kindergarten) and the other is turning 8 (2nd grade). What are popular gifts for girls? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you! Pamela

My dd's are 5 and 7. They LOVE Barbie. We have a million of them it seems, but they're already clamouring for the new Swan Lake Barbie that just came out. They also want the Barbie Swan Lake DVD (which, btw is on sale at Amazon for $13.99). They also love all kinds of arts and crafts stuff - paint, play dough, modeling clay, markers, etc are always a big hit as presents, expecially if there's glitter involved. (They have glitter crayons, glitter glue, etc.) My older one also likes beads - as in little kits that come with about a zillion little beads and you can make your own jewelry. She got some of these for her birthday and it wasn't as messy as I'd feared :)

They also like toy horses, stuffed animals, dress up clothes (you'd think the 7 year old would be too old, but my trunk of dress-up clothes was the hit of her birthday party this year), basically anything you find in that "pink aisle" of the toy store.

But of course there is nothing wrong with toys that are traditionally for boys. My girls also like Hot Wheels, Legos, etc. and then there are "gender neutral" things, like sidewalk chalk, jump ropes, and the new DVD of Lion King or Finding Nemo :) My girls also like "older" movies, like Parent Trap and The Apple Dumplin' Gang.

Happy shopping!

Laurie :)

My kids are a little older (4th grade and 2nd grade), but we've started giving a "reading kit". I buy a cute mug from the Dollar Tree, and put in a packet of cocoa mix, a bag of microwave popcorn, a bookmark, and a Barnes & Noble gift card so that the kids can choose a book.

I have the same problem with my 7 yr niece..........

Just don't know what to get her this year for Christmas........... I have her 2 sisters covered, but she is the middle child & I really am bushed as to what to get her.

I'd like to get something different, that is not commonplace yet, but as to what that might be...........who knows.

I only have $17 to spend...........as I already have a litlte something for her & the max spend is $20.

I LOVE the reading kit idea! I will definitely have to steal that one!

My DS's and My DNeices (ranging from 5 to 11) all love to get gift cards.

For birthdays and Christmas we have given/recieved gift cards to Chuck E. Cheese, the movie theatre, the bowling alley, Toys R Us, MediaPlay, the craft store, Walden Books, and even McDonald's.

I have never seen a gift card that was not received with enthusiasm.

If you don't want to go that route, how about a board game?
You can find games for every age and interest. I just saw a really cute Kim Possible board game at Wal-Mart tha I was thinking of buying for one of my neices.

Any and all of these ideas would be good. :)

A really nice thing to do is to buy a disposable camera and a photo album-Target has some really cute girly ones that say "Friends" on the cover. The birthday girl can use the camera at her party and then put the pics in her album. My girls have received gifts like this on two different occasions and loved it both times.

Fashion Polly is also very popular with my girls and all the neighbor girls - ranging in age from 4-10.

I'm not sure what they cost in the States, but how about an Italian charm bracelet? One son could give the bracelet and the other could give a charm. The nice thing about them is that they can take out extra links if they're too big, and then as they grow, the links can be added back in. There are stores up here that sell knock offs for about $6. for the bracelet and $2. for charms.

I just bought a friends daughter (8) something fun for Christmas.

On toysrus.com they have a Groovy Ceramic lamp. It's a plain white lamp that comes with everything you need to decorate it. Paint, pom poms, etc. It will be so fun for her to decorate it and put it in her room.

Any craft things are fun. Kids love that kind of stuff.

Bubble bath with cool accessories, writing tablets with colored pencils are things my DD 6 would love. Her favorite present on her birthday was a photo album. Go figure.

I like the reading kit, too. Last year I got my niece (8) a subscription to Nickalodeon magazine and she LOVES it. Loves getting mail every month and is really enjoying it. There is a Nick, jr., magazine out there, too, for the younger ones.

My girls (the younger 2, ages 5 and 7) love Bratz dolls and anything Arts and Crafts.

A gift we have been giving lately (which is a huge hit) is a gift card to Build A Bear!!

The ideas are awesome! Shopping will be so easy thanks to all of you. I am going to keep this list for future birthday gift ideas. Thank you!!!
