After reading many motion sickness threads I decided to try taking ginger pills prior to our trip. I started taking them on 4/9 and will be in the parks on 4/21. Did I give myself enough time to get them through my system enough to work? I also bought some Bonine but I'm concerned that I will be so drowsy that I fall asleep on the bus to the parks. I am looking forward to riding EE and RnR if this system of ginger pills and Bonine works.

hello! My mom and I were just talking about ginger pills the other day. I think you gave yourself plenty of time. You are supposed to start taking them just a couple days before you go. Also, they say anything with ginger helps with motion sickness like ginger snaps or gingerale. So you should be fine

Bonine is the same as non-drowsey Dramamine, so it won't make you sleepy. Hubby and DD take it everyday when we cruise.

I've heard Ginger also works.

BTW what makes you sick?

Great question!! Dh suffers with nausea from certain rides, and I am very curious to see how well ginger would work to help that. You have to let us know when you get back! Have a great trip!

Yes, I start taking ginger pills right before I travel and have no problems. However, I combine it with taking a dose of LESS-Drowsy Dramamine each night before bed (starting the night before I travel). Then I don't get tired during the day and it lasts 24 hours so once per night and I'm good to go.

I don't think they make non-drowsy Dramamine, but a "less drowsy" formula. Not sure about Bonine but I believe it's the same...less, non non drowsy.

My daughter swears by ginger Altoids. She keeps them in her purse for every road trip.

:thumbsup2 I love ginger altoids! I've never tried them for motion sickness, but they are great for general nausea.

I get motion sickness on certain rides and am considering taking ginger as well. What is the dosage you are supposed to take? Where do you buy them? Do they sell them anywhere or do you have to go to a specialty store to get them. Also is there any side effects?

i've been using the chocolate coated ginger altoids - although my motion sickness is so bad, i'm just resigned to waiting outside for DH to be done with whatever ride i don't do anymore (EE, Test Track, Mission Space, Soarin)

it's lonely on the bench.... :sad1:

Sweet, I didn't know about the ginger thing. I will have to try it so that I can ride Star Tours. My DH really wants to try ToT. I once rode this ride kinda of like it at Six Flags over Texas, but it is just one drop not up and down and up and down. I had to spend several hours in the infirmary after it. I doubt I will ride it though. My youngest son was recently diagnosed with having petite mal seizures, and I have high blood pressure. Oh well, I guess he can ride it with our oldest DS.

In our family's experience (DH and DD both get motion sickness badly enough to get ill in a car) the ginger pills have worked w/very little time to "build up".
:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

We just buy ours at Whole Foods. Dh takes two and the kids take one.

I take 1 in the morning and 1 at night (while on vacation.

You can find them at most places that sell vitamins (I get mine at Wal-Mart).

Only side effect I have experienced occasionally is to burp and taste ginger. But that doesn't happen often, as I usually take them with food.

This is the first I've heard of this - is there a special formula ginger pill, or (as PP mentioned any ginger products) can you eat some dried or crystallized ginger, etc? Like ginger ale, can you take it as you're feeling ill, or is it too late then? TIA!

There is no need to take ginger pills well in advance of your trip.

You might want to try crystallized ginger while on your trip. You can chew it while walking around the park and it should have the desired affect. Ginger pills can be hard on your stomach if you take to many or too often. ;)

Here's the synopsis from the mythbusters that tested motion sickness "cures":
"Seasickness: Kill or Cure
The MythBusters tested various seasickness cures. They wanted to see if any non-pharmaceutical, no-side-effect remedy would work.

Motion sickness is caused by your brain being unable to process conflicting signals from your sense: your eyes tell you that your surroundings are still, but your inner ear and your fine muscle controls are telling you that things are moving.

Test setup
They built a chair modeled after NASA's seasick chair. The chair spun around at 7 rpm while the person in the chair was ordered to move their head to touch tennis balls positioned in front, behind, and to the sides.

Finding the test subject
They had to figure out who in the MythBusters crew was susceptible to seasickness. Adam was a sure bet because of previous seasickness during the Jaws Special. Sure enough, Adam got quesy within 3 and half minutes on the chair. After a half an hour in the chair, Jamie was still fine. Kari and Tory were both fine as well. Grant became the final test subject. He lasted longer than Adam, but he got sick as well.

Remedy Testing
Homoepathic tongue tingler. They used a unnamed spray that you squirt under the tongue as often as needed. Grant was sick within 10 minutes and vomited some small chunks. Adam was sick within 4 minutes.
Wrist straps:They wore little gray wristbands that are 'Barry Manilow's choice.' Adam was sick within 90 seconds. Grant got sick as well. They've gotten pretty quick with bringing a bucket to Grant.
*Ginger pills: It worked! Adam and Grant were both fine.
Small shocks on the P6 Accupunture point (on the wrist): Both Adam and Grant got sick.
Placebo: They told Grant and Adam they were getting an over-the-counter pharmaceutical remedy, but they actually gave them vitamins. Adam's reponse: "I hate this [bleeping] chair" after three and a half minutes. Grant: "This is among the most effective, if not the most effective."
Over-the-counter pharmaceutical drug: Worked on Adam and Grant, but it made them both a little loopy.
Only thing that worked without any side effects was the ginger pill.

Ginger pills: plausible"

I have chronic nausea due to chronic migraines, and I use ginger pills on a daily basis. I like ginger chews for the parks (I get mine at Trader Joe's), as they're quick and don't require water.

We just got back from Cozumel, Mexico. On our way to the airport I couldn't find my dramamine. DH said we should be able to get some at the airport, so I said ok. Well we get to the airport turn in the rented jeep, went inside no dramamine anywhere. I was getting crazy I will get  sick on the plane if I don't have it. Then I remembered I had two ginger pills with me. Also remembered the Mythbusters show. So I took the ginger pills, they worked great didn't get sick at all.

Don't know if it was the ginger pills, but I took them and had no trouble on a cruise (and I usually get sick riding to the mall). I started taking them two days before we got on the boat (and we were driving both days).

Word of caution. I have a co-worker who gets sick every morning on the train. She started taking ginger, and the symptoms got worse. Ends up, she's allergic to ginger.:confused3

I'll have to keep my eyes out for that episode - sounds like a good one!

Thanks for the info! Note to self - pack the ginger you've been saving for no apparent reason :goodvibes

You may not be able to take ginger, or you may require special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions or are taking any of the medicines listed above.

Do not take ginger without first talking to your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

I found this on drugs.com. Some people can get heartburn from taking it. Some people are allergic, and it can also cause an irregular heartbeat, however this is rare.

It's amazing people take anything after reading side effect possibilities!!
