Gifts From Visiting Guest

My 19 yo daughter will be taking a two week course in Washington DC this summer. She is staying with one of her college roomates and her family. I want to give a gift from our family to hers for their gracious offer to host our daughter. I don't know them at all, and am having difficulty deciding what to give. Any ideas? Thanks!

Send flowers a couple of times while she's there. Cut flowers - nice ones. Have her take them out to dinner at the end. One of my favorite hostess gifts was a package of eight beautiful flowered cloth napkins that went with my table service. My guest sent them after she left.

I always like to give a gift that is specific to the part of the country in which I live. When I lived in New Mexico, it was usually chile related for food or Native American art. In Michigan, something with blueberries, cherries, petosky stones, etc.

DD18 was recently invited to spend a few weeks with a friend and her family. She flew back to Phoenix a few days ago and I sent along a gift basket of Maine products for the family to enjoy. I included a small bottle of Maine maple syrup, a box of "moose" cookie mix, a few lobster shaped lollipops, and a box of chocolate fish surrounded by seashell candies. Of course, it helped that my daughter knew they all like sweets!

If they're a practical family (although you said you didn't know them well), find out where they get groceries or pizza & send a gift card, since they'll be feeding your DD while she's there!

Usually chocolates from the Swiss Chocolatier or Fenton art glass.
