My 5-year old really likes to disassemble stuff, especially with screwdrivers. He likes to figure out how things work by taking them apart but doesn't usually figure out how to put them back together. Any good gift ideas? Keep in mind, he's only 5, so the assembly step can't be too complicated. TIA!

I don't know if this is what you had in mind, but there is a line of Handy Manny toys that it tells you what is broken and you look at the blueprints and take out the broken part and screw it back in, things like a radio and tv. My Ds has the tv and likes it, but you do have to use the Handy Manny screwdriver it comes with, not a real one.

My DS was the same way when he was younger. Took the doorknobs off while I was in the shower when he was about 2 or 3! :lmao:

Anyway, I got him into Legos early and he LOVES them. They have some for every age level and at 5yo, you aren't into the really expensive ones so you can get some for about $20 or so.

Modeling clay and tools worked great too - for us it was about keeping the curious hands busy! ;)

Lucky you...;)

I was told by my DH's family when I married him that as a child he used to greet visitors with a screwdriver in his hand...only to find that the doorknob would fall apart. He had a collection of wires, tubes, cords under his bed. Whatever he would find. He started fixing old tv's, radios he found, lawnmowers and eventually cars. Just expect him to collect an assortment of parts. It's a never ending project. You name it he'll have it. My basement if full of it. Yeah, he can fix things that are fixable...but he sure has a stash of parts he may need in the future..:confused3

I could have written your post:) My little guy LOVES Meccano. Real screws, real tools, and he can build whatever he wants!

I should have mentioned that we have lots of Legos that he plays with quite a bit, but for some reason that screwdriver keeps finding its way out of my tool kit. I think I will look for one of the beginner type erector sets. I'm hoping I can focus his attention on taking the appropriate things apart rather than household items or his other toys! Thanks a bunch!

I was a Cub Scout leader - and our most popular meeting each year was "Take it Apart" day. We would save up broken VCRs, DVD players, blenders, toasters, phones, TVs, anything that was broken - and let the kids take it apart.

Any elderly neighbors or relatives?? check out their basement and garage.

Legos, Legos, Legos!

He might enjoy snap circuit sets, too.
