aww, snow-- i was reading a suprise trip report and you never posted how it went.

My DS9 is a big fan of Nerf guns/shields/swords and so are most of his friends. He loves any board games - favorites are short, competitive games - like Connect Four or Bed Bugs or Jumpin' Monkeys. We also play Uno and Uno Attack - those are fun for the whole family. His Christmas list this year includes the Angry Birds Star Wars Jenga game too, but I think that one is fairly expensive compared to the others I mentioned.

My 9 year old ds wouldn't be interested in any of those things. OP, stick with generic. Most boys love legos.

I'd go with Nerf stuff and Legos. I'm getting my nephew a Lego create watch, they look pretty cool.

My 9 year old is obsessed with Legos, any kind will do but Ninjago is especially popular right now. There are also Lego board games you could look at.

Another possibility is an Erector Set, I don't imagine its something everyone would like but Target has a pretty cool looking one that comes with a motor, makes like 50 different things and is around $50.

Is there a big football team in your area, maybe a sports jersey?

I agree that you can't go wrong with legos. There are several sets out there for under $10 that make several different things depending on how you put them together. I think they are called Lego Creator sets and my DS has the helicopter one, dump truck, and some race car sets.

DS 10 suggested McDonald's gift cards, some Crayola art supplies, walkie talkies or Nerf stuff when I asked him for recommendations.

Maybe $5 gift cards to local places. Thank you

This is my 9 year olds Christmas list:

Legos (6 or 7 different sets on the list) Ninjago and Star Wars
Sports Jerseys
(video games and an itouch) not relevant here

He also loves Star Wars - last night he had his own money to spend and bought a light saber - as if the other 10 he already has aren't enough.

Also Footballs, Basketballs, baseballs, bat, glove would be awesome too!

I also have a 9 year old son. I had him make a list and the first 15 things were Legos...Ninjago and Star Wars Legos. All the boys in his class bring in the Ninjago ones and they get to play with them during "free time".

For board games my DS' love/loved Sorry, Sorry Sliders & Uno

They also love:

Playing Cards (war is a favorite game),

Tools - Home depot sells a nice starter set specifically designed for that age group - includes a couple of screw drivers, a wrench, hammer, tape measuer and a pair of pliers - perfect for dissecting those broken toys

any ball that's small enough to fit into a pocket that can be used to bounce off a wall for recess

Small Remote control helicopter or truck

Minecraft game for PC

and last but not least...

BATTERIES!

I agree with this, and males always love swords, but the charity may not want to gift weapons of any kind. I'd stick to non-combative choices.
