Gift exchange with family

How does your family handle gift exchanges? Do you buy for everyone or do you draw names? Or do you skip extended family gift exchanges altogether? Do you set a price limit?

On my side of the family, we've been drawing names for the past few years between my sister & DH, my mom & dad, and DH and me. Sometimes we include my uncle and his DGF. We usually try to set a limit on the amount. Then everybody buys something for the kids.

My sister alternately cracks me up and frustrates me to death with our gift exchange! :rotfl: First thing she does after we exchange names is she figures out who everybody else has. Then she tries to direct the exchange by trading names. After that, she'll come up with a list of what everybody should buy everybody else. She's easy to ignore, but it's still pretty hilarious. :rotfl:

We drew our names last night and we'd barely had the names drawn from the hat when she was asking, "Who did you get? Who did you get?" :rotfl2: For some reason, her 9 yo DD took charge of the drawing (control freak in training :rotfl: ) and wanted us to write a "wish list" of 4 things. So I think we may avoid my sister telling everyone what to buy from now on.

On DH's side of the family, we actually got kicked out of MIL's family's gift exchange. :earseek: DH used to paint ceramics (very good quality, he sold a few pieces for decent $$$), so one year he gave a set of something (Santas or angels) to the family member whose name he drew and I guess it caused a minor uproar after we left because nobody could tell if it came up to the set dollar amount. We didn't even bother explaining that it was worth hundreds rather than the $20 limit they'd set.

On FIL's side, we don't draw names, but just outright buy gifts. It used to be just he and his wife, but now it's just him.

Thanks ;)

What did it for you? The :rotfl: or the :rotfl2: ?

We just buy for the kids (who are now 18, 19 and 20), but my sis and I usually get each other a little something (nightgown, book, etc.). We also buy for my dad and MIL.

My family is so small that we just buy a gift for each person. For DHs side I buy a gift for each child and a couple gift. Since I have nothing to do with them and don't like them they are lucky to get that. I only buy for them so DH doesn't go empty handed when he and DD goes over Christmas Eve to see his mother.

For extended family we draw names. We used to put the kids names in one hat and the adults in another but that was getting difficult. Too many of the kids are grown, leaving our kids hat small. So this year we combined the adults and kids. We have never set a monetary limit, most people keep it to about $20. We have a big party about a week before Christmas to exchange the gifts, it's always a lot of fun. As far as my immediate family, we buy for each other. On Christmas day my brothers and their families and my family all go to my moms house to exchange our gifts.

My immediate family is just mom dad my brother and me--usually my brother and i chip in to get mom and dad something bigger..my brother and i also exchange..

My dads side of the family has 14 cousins--so the names get put in a hat and we pick one..we exchange on christmas eve

I have two siblings so we exchange gifts - they don't have other families. I've tried to talk them into giving my family just one "family gift" to even it out, but it hasn't happened yet - in fact I'm in trouble if I mention it.

DH only has one sister, but she has four kids. Our kids are all over 10 so this year we decided to swap family gifts - yeah! (We're giving them an ice cream sundae package - ice cream dishes, toppings, and a gift certificate for ice cream)

So basically, we give the same number of gifts as siblings we have and everyone gives to the parents.
