Getting stressed-hope someone can answer my PAPER ID question!

I do hope someone can answer this question! We will be flying out this coming Sunday. My 18 year old son just got his Driver's License. However, here in RI they do not give you your actual plastic license at the DMV. What he does have is a paper "print out" from the DMV. It does have all the info including license number, personal info and a photo. If the actual plastic license does not arrive in the mail before we leave, will the paper one be accepted?

Don't worry. The same thing happened in our family a couple years back. The paper one has your picture along with all the details that are on a normal license. It worked for security just fine.

You should be fine. I have witnessed on 2 seperate occasions where a passenger forgot their identification and were allowed to pass security but they did have an extensive security screening. Plan for that as a worse case scenario

Does he have a passport? If he doesn't have one of those, I'd take him to get a State/County/Sheriff's Photo ID. Worst case scenario would be a school ID with photo and accompanying birth certificate (not really what they are looking for but might work for a young 18 year old).

The same thing happened to me recently. I was told I needed State issued picture ID's for my kids because they would be traveling without a parent. I had to go the capital to pick them up, but the DMV people were really nice about making sure that I got them in time. I did have the paper versions, but no one could tell me for sure that they were enough. I didn't want problems so I picked them up instead of them mailing them

The paper license is considered an actual license until such time as the plastic license arrives, and it will be fine for airline travel. To be 200% sure, simply call the airline, explain the situation, they will advise. I guarentee you, though, you have no need to stress.

Anyone 18 and older (or lokking to be 18 or over) needs a government issued photo ID to board a plane in the US. This is especailly true for foreign nationals. Your 18 yeat old will need a government issued ID prior to travel--Drivers License, Passport, etc.

Several years ago my two sons were flying to the West Coast to visit my cousin for a few weeks....my oldest was over 21 ....had ID ....not a problem.
But, my younger son was 14 at the time and didn't have a photo ID. Since photo ID isn't required on airlines for anyone younger than 18 I wasn't worried about that, but, I did want him to have something. So, I went to PA Vital Statistics office and got a certified copy of his birth certificate for him to carry with him. And since they were traveling together we also gave our older son a signed/notarized statement from my husband and I that he had temporary guardianship/custody of his brother in the event of a medical emergency or something of that nature.

I'm also a RI'er and I know what you mean about those pesky paper licenses!

I made the mistake of renewing my license right before my WDW birthday trip in January 2005. I had no problems whatsoever with presenting the paper temporary at the PVD and the MCO airports. I did, however, have a problem with trying to use the paper temporary license as proof-of-age at the bars in WDW. Since your son is only 18, that shouldn't be an issue.

That might not work. If he looks 18 or over, the TSA has every right to demand documentation (a birth crtificate or government issued photo ID) that he is under 18.
