Getting Ripped Off At Coin Counting Machines At Bank?

Oh, no!!! I saw a report that the coin counting machines at my bank, TD Bank, has been ripping off customers. I use the machines maybe twice a year when my change jar gets filled. I was going to bring the change in next week to exchange for bills for my upcoming vacation. Now all of TD's machines are closed until further notice.

I suppose I can use one of those Coinstar machines in a supermarket, but they charge a fee. TD's machines were free for bank customers.

It's not like I have a lot of coins, maybe $50 worth.

Maybe there will be a class action lawsuit and I'll get a 50 cent settlement out of it. :rotfl2:

Never use them, we just roll our change by hand and take it to the bank.

Our bank got rid of the machines. You have to roll your coins in order to exchange them now.

I believe coinstar only charges a fee if you get cash. I think they offer gift cards and those don't have a fee.

None of our local banks allow you to roll your coins and bring them any more and their coin machines charge a fee, even if you are a customer. We usually roll them and take them to the grocery store or I use them for my toll booth and car wash money.

I just rolled $47 worth of change and it took maybe 30 mins. The bank will give the coin sleeves. I keep 2 change jars, one for pennies and one for everything else. I have my girls help to sort the money and put it piles of ten or 4 for quarters. I put on a podcast and it is really no bother to do it :)

Wow - we have three banks in town and even if you aren't a customer, they will cash in your change for you - no charge

and if its rolled, they will unroll it - they have to now

Have never used a coin machine, either at the bank (I've never even seen one there) nor at the grocery store.

We roll ours the old fashioned way, with the coin wrapping papers. We have two quart-size canning jars - one for pennies, the other for nickels, dimes and quarters.

We don't fill them fast though, as we do use coins quite often when paying for stuff. That is if I have time (like at a busy drive-thru, or at a restaurant, etc.) to sort the change. I'm not going to stand at a check-out and dig for a penny or two and hold everyone else up though. :)

My Credit Union has a machine. I've probably used it twice...for a small amount of change (usually mostly pennies).

We like to use our change as we get it.

our bank won't take rolled coins anymore, they make you go to their coin counting machine, but at least they don't charge you for it

Yes - Coinstar only charges a fee for cash. I just cashed in a bunch of coins for a Amazon gift code. Easy peasy.

I guess it would be OK if the machines were accurate and didn't charge but it is much easier to carry around rolled change than loose change. Our bank compares the size of the roll and scars is down the side to see the coins.

I feel like a freak cause I actually USE my change when I make purchases so I never have enough coins around that get too burdensome to carry around with me. Does anybody else use their change like I do? Bueller?

If your coin star doesn't have a gift card you like, check another one. I always cash mine for Amazon. We don't carry coins because they are heavy to carry.

I keep meaning to take some change to a coinstar machine to have it counted. We don't use pennies anymore so I'm wondering if I put in 1.03 if it would be rounded up to 1.05. Do that enough times and you could have a nice profit..

It doesn't round up

We always use the Coinstar at the grocery store. We save it up until we have over $100 at least. I don't think our bank takes rolled coins and they don't have a machine. They don't want your useless change :)

But if I put in $1.03 worth of pennies I couldn't get paid that because pennies aren't currency any more. the way they work here is that you put in your change, you get your receipt, and then you go to the customer service desk (they're in grocery stores) and they give you the cash.

If pennies aren't used anymore, then the machine would probably be programmed to spit them back out. Rejected coins get returned.

The coinstar machine that i use has stopped issuing gift cards. I am going to have to find a new place to go.

I usually do. Every now and again I get a cluster for some reason that I find too heavy to carry around. Then I just throw some in DH's jar to lighten my purse up again.

DH just paid DD a few rolls of quarters to roll up his change jar. He said he had $300-something. He told me what he planned to spend his newfound fortune on, too, but it was too techie and boring and I can't even remember now. (He only told me this past weekend, so that's pretty bad.)
