Getting ready for a scrapping event?

I am planning to attend a scrapping event, and it will be my first one. Now, hopefully without sounding like too much of an idiot, I have a few questions about how to get ready for it.

I would like to be able to use the cut-out machines for some die-cuts, and I don't really know which kind of paper to use. Do I just cut up some solid colors of the paper I already have, or should I take some of those little scrap packets like they sell at Wal Mart that have several colors in different sized squares? How much should I plan on taking with me if I want to make a lot of cut outs?

Also, do I need to have some pages already put together, say in a 2 gallon ziplock? I haven't had the chance to start anything yet---there's just so much that's been going on here and I have only had the chance to organize the few things I do have. I don't want to look like a complete idiot there, but I hope that I can learn how to get started scrapbooking, and think that this may help me.

Also, those little opaque envelopes in the Dollar Spot at Target with the scrapbook stuff---do I need some of those? I wasn't too sure what they were for, so I passed on those, but I thought I remember reading something about using them to store things on the page with. Is that right?

Thanks!

well, first of all, have a great time! :) I have taken everything I own plus the kitchen sink and I have done the other way and had stuff pre packed. If you want to get stuff done, it probably helps to be a little organised and know what you want to work on. for the die cut stuff, I usually take a bag of all my scrap paper with me. If you know exactly what you are working on and what colours you will need then you could cut your own paper before hand... I of course, never know what I want to do until the moment strikes. (makes it very hard to pre plan for a crop). sorry that wasn't very helpful. :) maggie

ps: yes you can use those very cute vellumy looking envelopes at target for holding things on a page

Thanks! I hope there's a few of those envelope "thingys" left when I get over to Target on Friday.

Wow! I guess I need to spend a little time planning on what to take. I'll probably forget something, I'm sure of it! I hope it's as much fun as it sounds. Do people really stay up late working on pages? What I mean is, can you just go downstairs in the hotel into the crop room in your jammies if you are working late?

One of the cool things about a crop is there are other people there! I usually go with one particular girlfriend and we try to coordinate ahead of time which tools to take. And we share back and forth if we've forgotten something.

I've also found if I really get stuck someone will usually loan a tool. Occasionally even a sheet of paper or two.

I am going to a crop on Fri and though I don't specifically have anything "planned" what I do is bring sketches of layouts I like the look of. Then when I am there if I find paper or embellishments that match my idea that is the page I do. I have approx 17 sketches ready for tomorrow even though I know I will not get that many done. I also bring an expandable pocket thing with all my scrappable pics because I generally fit the pic to the layout instead of the other way around. Very strange, I know. Last time I got 2 pages done and some swap stuff. I spend a lot of time browsing the store and the ladies at my LSS also try to teach some new techniques or they let us try stuff we haven't done before. Last swap I used modeling paste and embossing stuff for the 1st time. Liked the paste but did not like embossing. Was glad I got the oppourtunity to try it before investing in the gun and powders etc.

Do most people stay at the hotel that is hosting the event? That seems to make the most sense to me, but I wasn't sure. Also, which kind of snack goodies should I bring---homemade or just some cookies/candy from the store? Sorry to obsess, but this is my first time, and I don't want to look like I don't have a clue (I really don't!).

I am not sure how to answer. The only crops I have been to have been day crops. Lucky girl!

Have lots of fun! I love going to crops. I've even been to a couple of all night crops.

I feel I get more done if I have some pages "somewhat" planned. I like to use the 2 gallon ziplock bags for that. Plus, then I don't have to drag everything I own with me, lol. I bring my box of sorted pics with me & my BH Sketches book just in case I have time (so that I can start planning more pages). And my paper cutter, extra blades, plenty of adhesive and any other tools you think you might need. If you're cropping at a store, you can always buy some of the things you need (that can be dangerous, lol)

As far as snacks, go with something you know you'll enjoy eating. Chances are others will enjoy it too.

Snacks, I ususally bring things that are not salty or to messy, Like M&Ms (great when you get them after a holiday for 90%off), unsalted little pretzels, and I love liquorice, oh and sometimes a bottle of wine.

As far as going down in your PJs I don't know, the over night crop I go to for a weekend is in a lodge where we are the only ones so we crop even part of Saturday in our jammies. Its a blast.

Remember to have fun and relax at the crop I'm sure you will learn alot and make plenty of new friends.

I make up my pages kits with my pictures and make a pile of the embellisments I want to take with me as I'm doing my page kits, make notes on some paper. Then hopefully I remember the idea I had when I put the page kit together.

Don't forget your paper trimmer, scissors, embellishments you want to use, extra paper, adhesive, pens and this year I am taking along my sidekick and sizzlets (much easier than dragging my sizzix with me)

The most important thing is to have a fun weekend.
