Getting groomed in the MK

Just wanted to share a favorite MK tradition: Our vacation wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Harmony Barber Shop on Main Street! Our 18 year old daughter just adores a lovely stylist named Maura, who has given her haircuts for many years. And after the cut, Maura colors and styles her hair. "Colors," you ask? Yes, as in pink, green, purple, gold, etc. We just hope and pray she doesn't get caught in a heavy rain :rotfl2: And of course, she's showered with "pixie dust." She always comes out of the shop with lots of glitter and a smile on her face!!!

So there are women "stylists" in there? I would love to get a trim and experience the fun first hand!

My son loves the attention he gets walking around with a Mickey painted into his hair! It's a free "souvenir" if you consider that you have to get a hair cut anyway!

My DS(3) and DS(7) love doing this as well! And it's amazing the reactions they get for the rest of the day -- they love the attention. (But getting them to wash their hair that night is a bit of a chore!)

My one "complaint" is that they seem to have changed the brand of the colored gel they use. In the past, they used a kind called "Spiker" from i.c.e., which worked really well -- in particular, it dried quickly. But on our most recent trip, they had a different brand, which took FOREVER to dry. I ended up "having to" buy a souvenier t-shirt to change into after my 3-y.o. leaned up against me and got green gel all over my shirt. And then when we went to Cindy's breakfast about 30 minutes later, it still wasn't dry, and I felt like I had to be super-vigilant to make sure the kids didn't lean up against any of the princesses and ruin their costumes!

Also, a piece of advice -- the barbershop is a popular "attraction," and if you go mid-day, you may find yourself with a VERY long wait (and no FP! :rotfl: ). We've found that the best strategy is to make a beeline for the barbershop immediately after the gates open -- we were first in line on our last trip, and the line was out the door by the time we left!

We took our DS (9 & 6 at the time) last year and it was one of the highlights of the trip. They received so much attention from everyone. We will definately do this on each trip. Infact, I think my DH will do it also! It was great! I think it cost about $15 - infact cheaper than what we pay at home & they do a very nice cut!

If I can figure out how to add pictures to this, I will post one for you to see.

Do you need an appointment? My 4 year old DGD would love to go in and be showered with pixie dust! She would not need to much "stylin"

No, you do not need an appointment. Just be prepared to wait a little and have fun!

Plan to have that done when the park first opens. Not as long of a line, and then they can wear it around like that all day long!

Visiting Harmony (guess where my name came from? LOL) Barber Shop has become a tradition for us too! My toddler got his first haircut there in '04. (and he didn't even cry! :)) We have never waited long but maybe we've been lucky?? I love the register and the telephone! Haircuts are reasonable...can't remember the exact price but nothing outrageous. Definitely a must-do for our family! :)

Can adults go??? Oh my god I would love to have that done  Please say yes we can yes a 30 something person can get it done please :cheer2:

Uh-oh...... he wanted to get a haircut there the day of the wedding in December... not so sure it's a good idea now! :earboy2:

My son got his haircut in 2003 and loved the attention he got for having the wild colored hair! I also commented to the lady there that I couldn't even get my dd (then 13) to wear a Mickey t-shirt- she said, "Get in my chair dear." and put her hair in Mickey ponytail holders for FREE!!! It was a little Disney Magic for us!!!

I think I'll get some pink in my hair this time! :teeth:

This sounds like a lot of fun. I've been to the barbershop but considering all 3 of my kids need haircuts maybe we'll check it out.

We just went a few days ago. This has also become a tradition for us as well. Haircuts are $14 for kids, and $17 for adults. If you ask them, they will also give siblings that aren't having their haircut pixie dust too. If you want, you can just get a Mickey tattoo without a haircut for $3. There are no appointments and no sign-in sheets, you just have to ask around and find out which customer you follow.

I also wanted to mention that during our last visit there were a few people in front of me that did not give the stylist a tip. I know it is a personal choice, but these people deserve acknowledgement as they really go the extra mile. In one case, three little boys in one family all had their hair cut by the same stylist and got pixie dust, Mickey tattoos, stickers, and lots of pictures taken and the mom left no tip at all (I'm not nosey -- I just happened to be waiting in a location right next to the cash register and could see the monetary exchange). I think it was pretty stinky.
