Getting around town near Disneyland

I am starting to think about a future trip to Disneyland when I bring my adult kids, spouses and grand-kid. We could rent some rooms across the street, but it might be better to rent a house near Disneyland. Most of the house rentals seem to come with a pretty serious walk so we would need some sort of transportation. Do you think it would be better to rent a few cars or uber/lyft wherever.

Is it worth it to an uber driver to pick up people and drop them off at the maingate? I used one house as an example address and it was 6 dollars to the ihop on Harbor. Plus tip, is that really worth if for a driver?

I've never rode in an uber so I am unsure of the etiquette.

Also if you wanted to rope drop or get home late, how reliable are they?

we've used uber to and from SNA, and I think once to the parks - my parents/brother also used it from the parks directly to the airport. Always have had a car within about 3 minutes, super easy. The only hangup would be if you require a bunch of carseats. We have 2 boosters, a convertible and an infant car seat - annoying enough we'd sooner walk a few blocks. If you've got one/zero carseats though, uber/lyft is great.

For large groups, especially multi-generational groups, it is very important to consider all sides of the equation before deciding on a house farther from the parks vs. several hotel rooms/a suite closer to the parks. You're looking at so much more than just financial cost -- there is the cost of convenience, energy spent getting to/from the parks, what about early mornings and trying to get everyone up and to the gates, nap schedules? -- especially when they aren't all the same, freedom to come and go as you please, the freedom to leave your things in the hotel room during the day so that you can get them later vs. hauling everything for the entire day with you every day of your trip, the hassle and cost of transportation and parking vs. walking for a few minutes to the gates, etc. We've had people rent houses for large family groups and save tons of money, but admit that hotel rooms closer to the parks would have saved sanity and exhaustion and been worth the money. A house might work great for you, but make sure to really look at all sides of the issue, not just the money numbers on paper.

I thought Anaheim was disallowing house rentals...

Well, they do it, so I assume so. Taxis and ride shares are all over there.

You can rent houses, just not with things like Airbnb. They have to be old fashioned traditional rentals that are registered as such with the city, charge taxes, etc.

I thought it would be fun for us to all stay in the same house. Really it will just be easier to stay across the street lol I was looking and looking and then I was like, darn, this is too much. Lets just get a few rooms across the street. lol

Lol I would vote for a hotel near the parks. There are some with suite style rooms too, so you can fit more people in a room. This way if people get tired throughout the day and want to take a break, it won't be such a hassel to go back. Or if some want to stay in the park and others go back, you won't have to pay multiple uber/lyft fees.

Exactly. Plus some of the people are late night workers so they tend to sleep later in the day, I don't want to have to worry about that. They can get up when they want and walk across the street.

We have DISers who visit the parks regularly with large family groups. Post a thread asking about which hotels near the parks they like best and why. You'll get great information and advice. I know many posters like the parlor suite at the Desert Palms. The Residence Inn is popular, too. The old RI is now the Clementine Hotel -- they have one or two larger suites. And the staff there is really nice.
