Getting around NYC

Hey all...I need some advice on getting around NYC.

We leave tomorrow for 3 days in the Big Apple. Taking Amtrack in (dh's choice), so arriving at Penn Station. Staying at Affinia 50 nearby Rockefeller Plaza. We plan on visiting:

Met. Museum & Central Park
Staten Island Ferry and Battery Park
New Amsterdam Theatre for Mary Poppins!!! (YAY!)

other than that just shopping and walking around Times Square, and dd has asked that we visit Ellen's Stardust Diner for lunch one day.

My question is what is what would be the best way for us to get around? We have never done the subway, is it easy, and will we get confused or lost if we try as newbies? We really don't want to have to pay an arm and a leg for taxis everywhere, and we will walk whenever possible.

Any advice is appreciated!

The subway is easy to navigate and easy to use. You should be fine.

You'll love the Affinia. It's very central, so you can walk to all of the surrounding blocks. It's very close to the Garment District, which is our usual destination for fabric-buying trips. We mostly walk, but will use the subway when we do some sightseeing. We used to take the subway up to 53rd Street to go to the World of Disney Store, which is now closed.

The subway is relatively easy to navigate if you take your time before you get on. Get a copy of the subway map and follow the colored routes to your destination, then you'll figure out the subway numbers. Make sure that you buy a FunDay Pass (that's what it was called when we last used it) . . . this will get you on and off all of the subways and most of the buses in the city for a whole day for about $7 or $8. Otherwise, you need to pay each time you get on.

Have fun and don't be intimidated by the transportation system.
