Getting another dog - any experience?

We have a 1 1/2 year old border collie/labrador and have been discussing whether to get a second dog. Does anyone have experience with this?

Our neighbour has a Golden Retriever which is exactly as old as our dog and they often play out in the yard and we take each other dogs for walks. We kind of like the "dynamics" of 2 dogs together. I know our neighboors have discussed having puppies in maybe a year or 2´s time and if we were to get another dog I would love to get one from them.

Did getting a second dog make a huge difference? Is there anything you would have done differently? How did your first dog cope?

We had a Jack Russel who didn't "play well with others". WE got TWO other dogs at the same time. The black lab is easy going. Didn't challenge the JRT at all. So they did "ok". Stayed away from each other basically. The other new dog was a puppy. She was very inquisitive. The JRT hated her. Attacked her at every turn. In the end we tried everything and ended up getting rid of the JRT.

Good luck.

Our dog plays very well with others. We have NEVER had problems when he has been playing with stranger dogs. I´m just wondering how he would react to a new puppy?

Take him somewhere to meet a puppy. Or do you have a breeder in mind? If you do, take him to the breeder with you to meet the puppies. THen you would have an idea. Our Lab LOVES every other dog. She loves all animals actually. So she would be fine.

I think you will be happy with another dog. Ours play together very well (although the Boston loves to chew on the lab- good thing the lab is so good natured! LOL).

We added a new puppy to our family( ME, DH, DD(10), Poodle Roosevelt (7)) in December...His Name is Truman and he is a Min Pin. I have to tell you while we love him dearly, I wish I would have thought it out more...the problem here in Okinawa is if I would have waited even an hour he would have been sold. I forgot how hard puppies are...to me it is harder than having a new baby.

Like I said he is adorable and we are committed to getting through the hard times because he is part of our family, but had I thought of all of the ramifications of a puppy I would have probably waited.

Sorry for the Ramble...our poodle has a adjusted okay...he gets jealous sometimes if Truman attempts to invade his space near us but they are playing more and more everyday.

The first dog (the smartest of the two) knows that we got fred for her to play with. But she does get a little jealous that she does not get 100% of the attention. When we chaved her for the first time this year everyone at the dog park was commenting and petting her nonstop. You could tell she loved being the most popular again.

She is the boss and he is like a little brother. If we ask hima question he will look at her for the answer, hehehehheeee. So they get along great.

If you know your dog well then it is the puppy you need to worry about and not your dog.

I would get a female for starters. I have a female and a male and they get alone better, I think it is "more natural".;)

Since you have a high energy dog make sure you get a dog to compliment that. For example while a basset hound is cute it is too low energy.
A terrier mix will probably be too high and cause too much excitement.

Find "good energy" mix for your dog.:thumbsup2

I think the Golden Retriever would go very well with our dog. They seem to have a very similar energy level. What do you think?

Bring the dog with you to pick out the puppy. Our puppy "picked us out" by choosing to be with our dog. They have been the best of friends for the last 8 years.

We have an Eskie and then found an Aussie pup. At first all was fine, but now the pup tries to bully the Eskie. IF we had known the Aussie would be BIG (was told 35-40lbs max, she is closer to 50lbs!) we wouldn't have gotten her. (I think we weren't told the whole truth.) I had also forgotten the amount of time puppies tend to take. She can be very exhausting at times! We wouldn't trade her for anything, but we won't do a puppy again either!
