Getting a walk up?

How does this work at WDW? If it's a reasonable wait, do most restaurants give you a buzzer? Just tell you a time to come back?

Depending on when you are going and how many are in your party, walk ups can be very difficult to get. Usually we try to make same-day reservations rather than do a walk up. We have done walk ups and usually just have to wait in the lobby of the restaurant; I don't remember being given a buzzer at any of them.

According to which restaurant and time of year, it could be next to impossible. I've done it at lunch with limited success but like PP I make reservations the same day in the morning.

The only TS that will give you a wait and text you is Skipper Canteen.

In general, except for a few unpopular options, and Disney Springs, do not rely on walk-ups. You will be disappointed more open than not.

If you try to do walk up at off hours, you may have luck. We did a walk up at Via Napoli at about 2:30 pm this week. Both the lobby and restaurant were packed, but we waited only 10 minutes. It never hurts to ask. :thumbsup2

if you think you might want to do a certain restaurant.....go ahead and make the reservation. You may and should cancel if you change your mind. We used to be really good at getting walk ups during off season time and before the DDP but not any more. Many places it is going to be impossible. You very well find SOMEWHERE to eat but it will be very hit and miss. A year or so ago we decided we needed a sit down in MK for lunch. This was off season........late January-early February. Nothing at all available. We ending up getting one at Trails Inn Buffet and it was great.......but not what a lot of people might want. On the other hand....many years ago....we got a walk up at Cinderella's Castle!

Some of the locations will take names and allow walk ups
Some (most) will not, even if they are not full
I'm afraid you'll find things very frustrating if you try nothing but walk ups

I've seen so many people get turned away during my last 2 trips (and that included me!), that I wouldn't chance it anymore. I'd just make ADR's for TS restaurants.

Anyplace with characters is going to be full, all but Tony's Town Square and the new Skipper Cantina because Skipper Cantina isn't doing ADR's will most likely be filled in MK, Epcot usually the China place and the Moroccan one accepts walk ups. Everyplace was filled at DHS when I tried to walk up in early December this year but that was ok - it was a whim anyway for me.
Yak and Yeti in AK took me as a walkup at 2pm in early December and mid October.

You would probably have good luck at Resort TS Restaurants as long as they don't have characters or are the Wave at the Contemporary. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I was told they weren't accepting walk ups in mid October 2015.

Good luck!

Yesterday, we tried to walk up to San Angel. We were turned away. So I went on the app and booked an ADR for right then. Went right back to the host stand and checked in.

I wanted to suggest posting your question on the DISabilities board. The folks there will probably have some great suggestions for restaurants that might work for your son.

Have a wonderful trip!

We go during value season and only do one or two ADRs for the week. SOmething we REALLY want to be special. Otherwise we have successful with walkups at Yak and Yet, Spice Road, SciFi (we were given a buzzer) and many others. It just depend upon demand.
