Getting a discounted AP with resale DVC

Not sure why the laughing emoji; it’s really a non issue for me as someone who has spent more time as resale only than not. No, I never tried to qualify, but if you did…well, then you did.🤷 I’m not Josh D’Amaro.

I know things are hard to take context and emotion during a post on a message board, so that's all it was.

As I stated earlier, it was member services that offered me the sorcerer's pass on their own choice and I didn't ask nor inquire.

Now, I did call to see if I could renew and again they said of course and renewed it.

So, not really "trying to qualify" etc.

So I just called Disney asking to get the discounted Sorcerer Pass as a DVC member (despite buying resale). They asked for my number and I had it within 5 minutes.

I was very excited... BUUUTTT I've now heard from multiple people that Disney will check at the gate when I first try to use it to confirm my eligibility.

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this, and what they did about it.

Thank you!
I have both direct and resale contracts. We bought the Sorcerer's APs. You have to go to a ticket office or guest services location to activate them before you can use them to enter the parks. When we went to activate them, they asked to see my DVC-Y membership card and driver's license before they would activate. It did not take long, but it seemed like they checked it both in my app and in their system because at first the lady looked skeptically at her screen, then asked to see my DVC membership card. I'm guessing she saw my resale contract first and wanted to confirm that I own direct before activating.

When we went to enter the park for the first time after activating, we just scanned in (and got the purple "Welcome Home!") and went on our way. So it seems they don't check anything at the gates because it's already verified by the activation at guest services.

If I were you, I would call Member Services or Ticketing or possibly both and ask these questions before you go try to activate. Don't just hope it works out because in my experience, the ticketing offices are pretty strict about their policies because they have to be.

I bought ap in May with DVC MS.

They told me all I need to do is scan in as well.

I already see the ap on my account and we will activate on our Oct trip.

Hopefully no issues. We own resale and direct.
If you own direct, you have nothing to worry about because they'll see the DVC-Y on your account at activation.

Obviously people who don’t qualify for a discount shouldn’t get it. It is shocking to me that people are brazen enough to post their unearned discounts on a public forum. Not smart.

Does it really matter though? I know I paid a lot more and I know that I qualify for whatever discount or event is being offered and don’t have to worry if this will be the time that I don’t get said discount.

In the end it doesn’t really affect me (except to a small degree as a shareholder) that they received the discount as it’s not coming directly from me.

It’s not good for an individual’s mental health to cheat. Ideally, I prefer to be surrounded by people who are not burdened by self-loathing. Our society only functions properly with a majority of moral people. Once the majority tips you end up with chaos. I realize this kind of behavior has become normalized to some extent, but I don’t think it has made people happier. Many people worked very hard to scrape together the money for a direct contract just for these benefits. It’s surprising and a bit scary to me that people who managed to buy the sorceror’s pass at a discount they did not earn feel the need to flex on a public forum. You would think you’d keep quiet about it. It’s brazen and shows total distain.

With a company like Disney that tries to please its guests whenever possible, I am not surprised that resale members are getting Sorcerer passes. There are lots of reports of resale members getting the dining and shopping discounts as well, cast members just apply it often without even checking their membership card.

I didn't buy direct to be able to buy the Sorcerer pass or get 10% off at Wetzel's Pretzels although I take advantage of as many of these opportunities as I can. I bought most of my points direct simply because I wanted to make sure I could use my points anywhere in the DVC system without restriction.

I don’t personally care what discounts people inadvertently receive. I guess they got lucky.

I do think pressing that luck after knowing you don’t qualify does show some moral flexibility I don’t personally have…but I don’t have to sleep with that feeling every night. They do.

I never understood why after the physical blue card wasn't being taken that they didn't either start scanning the code under the dvc-y, dvc-by, annual or tap your magicband that already knows your dvc to trigger the discount as this should have taken away any confusion from the cast member whether you should receive the discount or not.

And then I remembered why.....Disney IT

Checking out is all about speed. Taking time to scan the guest's magic band or swipe their Disney Visa to prove their discount eligibility is a lot when it's after fireworks and the line at the Emporium is 25 deep. Most of the time when I'm buying something at a gift shop they just apply the DVC discount as soon as I ask for it, they don't even ask to see my membership card on my phone. It's all about speed. Even at Tide Me Over at HHI they just apply it without looking most of the time.

It's not an insurmountable IT problem; all the checkout registers across property (even at places that don't accept discounts like popcorn carts) are equipped with magic band scanners that can read your magic band or digital membership card, and of course they have barcode readers that could read the barcode on your phone's digital wallet because they scan barcodes on merchandise. It's just a speed thing.

But getting back to the annual pass thing, this is a pixie dust/surprise and delight thing, and nothing will stop that unless Disney makes it a line-in-the-sand rule. And Disney doesn't have many of those, they do a lot for their guests that most other companies wouldn't consider.

For the record: I don’t think there’s any shame in using self checkout that automatically applies a discount you might not be eligible for. Self checkout is easy and fast. Who wants to use a line? Nobody who knows better. That’s on Disney IT to fix.

Asking to buy or renew a pass you know you aren’t eligible for requires a bit more chutzpah IMO. If you get it, that’s fine, but I can’t believe you tried in the first place. It’s the difference between a passive and an active discount request.
