"Dangerously cold winter weather" WOW.

All my kids came home with notes saying so. Great, thanks Mother Nature, a 4 day weekend so soon after Christmas break!!

I think that's great
My kids school will probably have to go but its going to be minus 30 tonight. I really wish they would cancel school tomorrow

My kids have already had school cancelled for tomorrow too. I have never heard of schools closing because it's too cold. How come they didn't close when I was in school?

Our school hasn't cancelled yet, but they never do until the very last possible minute, so I bet you anything they will wait until tomorrow morning. This morning at 7 am they still had a 2 hour delay, at 7:05 they closed, but the intermediate kids had to be on the bus by 7:10 , and the high school kids at 6:15.

It's very strange how the towns are doing this. Brockton is already closed as is a neighboring town but most of the other towns near us haven't cancelled. At least not yet. And it's not that the children in those towns all ride the bus to school. Some have to walk nearly two miles. They'd be frozen stiff if they try that tomorrow.

Back in 1980 - 1982, my high school in MA cancelled school on every Friday from JANUARY - MARCH each year....to save $$ on heat. The state gave us some kind of award for this...it was called austier (sp?) days.

We are at work today.....and it has been 64 degrees all day in building. Gas co finally came out. We have frozen pipes. So now the plumbers are dealing with that before we have bigger problems tonight. We have 3 space heaters going trying to keep warm. We yell at anyone who opens the door.

Last year.....the pipes BURST at work after they froze. It was 48 degrees inside when we came in that day.

Not much gets done at work when you are that cold. So it's probably for the best that they cancel school.

Another problem at least around here, is that the diesel fuel for the busses is CONGEALING, and the busses are breaking down. SO you could have kids waiting at bus stops for extra long.

We are one of the 'neighboring towns' to Brockton (Hi Virgo :wave2: ). We are cancelled. I am hoping that DS's after school program will open tomorrow for the full day. If not, I am looking for a babysitter. Anyone interested??? :teeth:

My son got a note sent home with him saying school will be delayed tomorrow morning due to the cold weather...I thought that was great...it was 20 below when he went to school this morning and when I brought him in, there were only 4 other kids in his class that came in!

DD's school was closed today because of the cold (my school never closed due to cold weather) too. Don't know about tomorrow yet, but if it's closed, it will give them a 5 day weekend with Martin Luther King Day.

I'm a little ticked because they have to take a math Regents exam in about a week and are losing very valuable review time.

They dont cancel school here for cold weather.....

However I can tell you all about diesel fuel jelling. I've been without my car since last week as DH's truck has been running off and on. Last Thursday it started. Friday was fine...Sat no go, Sun no go, Monday was 35' here, truck ran fine, DH changed filter etc... Tuesday runs fine. Wednesday he goes to work, is back within 8 minutes, truck wont do anything other than idle..the minute you try to give it fuel, the computer cuts.

A gas station here didnt get the 70/30 mix, and theres A LOT of VERY unhappy campers with diesel trucks sitting in their driveways jelled. DH and I are one of them!...

Our town has also cancelled school, due to the school bus/fuel problem. Our town is very large and spread out, and some children ride the bus 30 minutes or more to get to school. And if the bus broke down out here in the boondocks, the kids could be in real trouble. So I guess it was a smart move. It was -11 the other day at the bus stop in the morning and tomorrow is supposed to be even colder. But as we are "LEAVING ON A JET PLANE" tomorrow afternoon, I don't care. As long as the plane can take off, I'll be happy........................P

Ours is actually trhe only school in the area that hasn't closed yet for tomorrow! We had a 2 hour delay today that I think the superintendant caught some flak for-we were the only school that had any kind of delay for today:rolleyes:

We're cancelled for tomorrow. It is amazing how many little kids(kindergarten) I saw getting off the bus today with no hats or gloves and their coats were unzipped. One poor little girl was wearing a dress! People are crazy!

Ill make a deal with you! Ill take Ian for the day tomorrow, but you have to take me to WDW with you. ;)
In case I dont catch you again, have a great trip!

We closed once due to cold--the air temp was minus 20 with a higher wind chill. This was the day before Christmas break, and in spite of every other district giving out checks the day before knowing they would close, I had to drive 15 miles in that weather to get my check. Another reason I have direct deposit.
The district I work in and the district I live in both have "teacher work day" tomorrow--so they wouldn't cancel anyway. The kids already have a 4 day weekend. But then it's only going to be zero here tonight!;)

I had already planned on keeping my DD home tomorrow. She is in afternoon kindergarten and there for LESS than 2 hours. With this freezing weather I feel "cozier" w/ her home w/ me (plus I don't have to go get her at the bus stop like usual;) But she was also sent home w/ a notice. No school in Billerica for tomorrow. :D :Pinkbounc :bounce:

Our town here in RI closed school for tomorrow. Here's a link to the Channel 10 listing for Southeastern New England:

wdwnutze, I wouldn't be surprised if kids undo their coats on the bus...it's warm on there! However, I can't imagine putting a little girl in a DRESS in this weather!

:D We're cancelled for tomorrow. That means extra baby-sitting for me and extra $ in my Disney fund :teeth: . BTW, this is the first time that I can remember school being closed for cold weather. I'm glad they did it though. I can't imagine the poor kids who have to walk  .

School's out for tomorrow in Western Mass as well! How come we never had days off due to "cold"when I went to school in the 70's??!!! And we had a lot further to walk to get to the bus!

Keep warm, New England! :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Supposedly, this is the coldest it's been for over 100 years - could be that's why you don't remember school closing for cold weather. :)

Stay warm, everyone!
