Geriatric mm warriors (12/30/09)

Thanks. Demi made a comment last night that I thought was interesting. She said part of the problem with the co-worker was that she needed constant reassurance. Did she look fat that day? Was her boyfriend going to break up with her? Demi said that first she tried to be nice and give her the approval and assurances that she needed. But she finally got tired of being "fake" with the woman and that is when things went south. She is going to have find the balance between speaking her mind and holding it in. Or, create the perfect job for herself!
I honestly have found that I dont like working with a bunch of women. They are way too needy at times. Right now there are only 3 of us in the office and we all pretty much just speak our mind. It works great. Men, on the other hand, are the complete opposite of needs (emotionally) and that works great for me!
Robin - I hope you can post from home! This board just isn't the same without you popping in more often! And, Nell, where are you?????
I wish we could get Robin's computer fixed. It's just not the same without her. I see Nell popping in occasionally on FB, but I do miss her here also. It would be nice if we could get everyone back together, no matter what eating plan they are using.

Good Morning Ladies. Just wanted to pop in and say Hello. The board is very quiet and I know we ALL have a lot to talk about. Was up every other hour last night with Parker. He has that nasty croupy cough. Not fun.

Hope everyone has a fantastic day!

Kate: Sounds like you had a really productive dinner with Demi. Aren't you fortunate that she turns to you when she's upset? I don't know what I'd do without my Mom.

I hope I haven't distracted anyone with my tiny experiment this week. I know I was tried and true but something told me I might be overeating carbs. I've lost 3 lbs. so far; we'll see if it's a fluke or not. What I'm doing is my same exact method of eating but not putting the extra carb in if I don't feel like it. Berries in my am shake, sometimes flax bread sandwich for lunch, sometimes salad with no added carb, no carb snack in the afternoon unless I feel like an apple and not necessarily adding one to dinner. If I want beans, corn, carrots or peas I'm measuring them to an 11-20. If I don't want to add those things, I'm not adding empty carbs in their place.

I'm really ashamed - as much as I read labels, when I was shopping for Step 2 I was looking really only at carbs and fiber. Didn't realize until Jocelyn mentioned it that crackers can have sugar. Whole Grain Wheat Thins have high fructose corn syrup and sugar!! So even though they fit the formula, they are a horrible choice for a diabetic or someone like me that never wants to eat HFCS or sugar, unless I plan for it. I'm thinking this might have been the reason for Robin's spike when she went to Step 2.

There are carbs and then there are carbs and I truly believe the body handles them differently. Highly complex carbs deliver sustained energy to the body. Processed ones not so much. Even if I go back to the true version of Step 2, there won't be any HFCS in this house.

Once again, I don't want to discourage anyone. I did Step 2 for over 5 months and if this experiment doesn't work I'll probably start over. I'll do some version of this WOE because it's working, albeit slowly.

Thanks to everyone else for sharing what's working for you too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SON! 24 years ago today was the best day of my life. I can't wait to tell him that in person again.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SON! 24 years ago today was the best day of my life. I can't wait to tell him that in person again.

Hi Lisa - WOW 3 lbs already huh. That's great! Happy Birthday JP! I think Mom's ought to have a special day too...all the pain we endured going through their birth!!!! It's your special day too!

I've been reading on everyone's progress and you are right sometimes somethings that work for some don't work for others. I'm probably the perfect example of that. I simply don't understand why with MM it's such a slow process? I'm reading all sorts of other WOEs and am seeing different results with all of them.

For me, I believe it is my dairy intake...cheese that must have done it for me. High fat content maybe. I don't know. I do know that I've lost around 3-5 lbs now but I also gained 5 since last November so I'll be taking that off now. Wish I could exercise! Soon enough though.

Hope you are having a great day!

Cindy - sorry to hear that Parker is sick. Give him a hug for us! I'm glad to hear your vegetarian lifestyle is working for you. I am thinking my addiction to nuts is undermining my abilities. I am not sure what to do.

Lisa - Happy BIRTH - day!!!! Get it? Happy Birthday to J-P also. It's great to hear that this is working for you. Let me know exactly how you are doing it. I know what you are saying about HFCS. That is some nasty stuff and isn't allowed in our house. I even spend $18.00 for a 24 pack of Coke for my kids that is made in Mexico with Pure Cane Sugar. They are only allowed one per day, so it lasts almost 2 weeks. Better than the regular with HFCS, even if that is cheaper. I believe the US is the only country in the world that allows HFCS in its food.

Well, I'm off to crab cakes and caesar salad for dinner. It will be about 15 carbs, so I should be good until bed.

Beverly: I adore crab cakes! I had them at my lunch with Jocelyn.

I heard from SueAnn on FB and her daughter and my son have the exact same birthday - and the same age! What a small world.:cool1:

Mother is making Southern fried chicken and all the bad stuff, which she only does for J-P and my Dad's birthdays anymore - we're healthier than our raisin' most of the rest of the year, LOL! I will peel the skin off and not eat the pots, gravy and biscuits! Green beans only, promise.

My mother's fried chicken is probably my most favorite meal of all time. The white gravy with the mashed potatoes - yummo! Of course we always served it with corn. I always liked the white gravy on the corn too.

Now you have me wanting fried chicken.

Hi guys, no computer from home still...ugh...everything EXCEPT Dis boards works...makes no sense to me at all. Had a lovely, warm and sunny day off, then had to come in to the office, where I too, am surrounded by way too many women! LOL, always some sort of drama going on...

Kate - sounds like Demi will be owning her own donut shop some day and more power to her!!! I was that same child, lol, always voicing my opinion whether asked or not, and eventually was told by my pastor that the easiest way for me to "tone that down some" was to stop having such HIGH expectations of everyone around me...I guess us Type A's have to learn that not EVERYONE else is or wants to be!

Cindy - wow, sounds like you have had a time of it! Hope you are feeling better and the veggie diet sounds smart to me....but what the heck are you eating? Im pretty sure the cheese and dairy doesnt help me either, but I cant imagine what I would eat if I didnt have cheese OR meat? Care to share any of your menus?

Bev - I know, its weird how everyone seems discouraged enough to search for other plans, but the good news is we all STAY HERE TOGETHER, and support each other no matter what plan we are on! Deal? I spoke with Nell briefly and she promised to call me on night this week...so if she doesnt, I will be calling her!

Kathy - Jorge does have some interesting insights, plus is so close to Diane's plan I am hoping the few little tweaks might help me. Like Lisa said, he does advocate 6 servings carbs daily or 120g, but he DOES count all carbs, including veggies, etc...so its taking me some research and time to get menus planned and shopping list made! I love the v-8 idea...a couple girls here at work have started drinking 2-3 a day, since they are total NON-VEGGIe eaters...even if you cant afford the Ezekial bread, (who CAN?) surely some of the lower carb whole grain breads on the grocery shelf should work fine?

Lisa - Happy JP Birthday to you! LOL, so glad you are getting another visit in!

OMG - EAT ALL RAW? YUK YUK YUK...what in the world do you EAT on that plan? Geez, I just know its going to be seaweed, kelp and some sort of icky algae you are trying to get me to eat! :scared1:

BTW - those of you who eat grocery store beef...when you eat organic fed, like we have been for years and years, since we grow our own cows, the STORE BOUGHT stuff is what tastes weird!! LOL, when we run the freezer dry or have to eat "store bought" it tastes terrible to us!

Have a great night everyone, I will check in tomorrow!

Good morning everyone. It is so nice to see everyone on here. I know some are still MIA, but hopefully they will find their way back here.

Robin, I have been eating whole grain bread from the store. It is no way low carb, but I have 2 slices in the morning with my eggs. Between that and my V8, I am full until at least lunch. I usually eat around 8, so that has been working for me. I then eat lunch around noon, and supper around 5 and no later than 6. I do my V8 with each meal, right before I eat. I did eat a Fiber One bar yesterday (I know, sugar, my bad) but I needed to eat something so I could take my one supplement. I am to take 2 of them after each meal. If I take both at once, I get extremely nauseated. So I take 1, then a couple hours later, eat a small bit of something, then take the other. No ill effects so far. I am still in the 160's, but my weight is varying about 5# on any given day. Yesterday I was at 171. I had a huge supper last night. Mike made pork chops (he's an awesome cook when he does), home fries (I know) and green beans and peas. It was sooo good! Then I crashed at 8:30 from being woken up at 4am yesterday LOL.

Lisa, that fried chicken sounds sooo good!! I bet you guys had a lot of fun yesterday!!

Kate, Demi sounds like such a great person. My sister sounds just like her LOL. She has no problem speaking her peace. Sometimes though she needs to keep her piece to herself. She has hurt some people in the past speaking her mind. She left my grandma in tears once when they were home. I'm not saying Demi is like that. Please don't think that's what I'm saying. I know she will take this experience and learn from it, and get something even better. When she opens her own doughnut shop, send me just one!!

Cindy, I don't think I could do vegetarian. Especially with no milk products. I'm finally getting used to no milk now. Really miss my yogurt and cheese though LOL.

I'll be back later. Have a great day everyone!!

Cindy - wow, sounds like you have had a time of it! Hope you are feeling better and the veggie diet sounds smart to me....but what the heck are you eating? Have a great night everyone, I will check in tomorrow!

Sure I'll share. Breakfast usually consists of lots of fruit!! Today I'm having a banana, grapefruit and in a little while I'll have some strawberries. Other breakfasts I can have plain oatmeal with fruit, whole grain slice of toast with fruit. I had a baked apple with cinnamon and raisins, he recommends a tsp of flaxseed once a day at some point during the day.

Lunch is usually a pita with hummus and tons of veges or a salad with some type of bean soup or vegetable soup.

Dinners I like cooked food so I have cooked veges (zucchini, onions, mushrooms and stewed tomatoes with tofu, vege chili, vege stir fry with grilled tofu. This weekend I'm going to try to find more recipes. Just started this WOE about 5 days ago so I'm still learning. I don't miss dairy at all and I could live on cheese, but I LOVE fruits so it's all good.

1 oz of nuts a day, he suggests you eat beans every day too.

Things that are off limits...dairy, animal, between meal snacks, fruit juice and dried fruit. This is part of a six week plan. I'm down another 1/2 lb today :)

Lisa - Hope your dinner was scrumptious!!

Kathy - sounds like you are doing great too!

Good morning everyone!

I rent an office in a building with a bunch of other attorneys. I have been in the same place for over 9 years. The most drama in the building was when a male attorney had his wife work for him and he was having affairs!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SON! 24 years ago today was the best day of my life. I can't wait to tell him that in person again.

WHOOOO HOOOOOO! Did you hear that all the way from my house! Congrats on the 3 pounds! That is wonderful.

Cindy - sorry to hear that Parker is sick. Give him a hug for us! I'm glad to hear your vegetarian lifestyle is working for you. I am thinking my addiction to nuts is undermining my abilities. I am not sure what to do.

Hmmmmm. Well, I don't drink Coke but that is very interesting about the difference between USA Coke and Mexico Coke. I just don't understand it. Why don't we use pure cane sugar? I know that the sugar cane industry has really fallen off. Maybe someone should give it a boost and start using it instead of HFCS!

On April 22 you can say "Happy Birthday" to me and to Demi. She was born on my 30th birthday. Whenever I can't remember how old I am (which is quiet often), I just think about how old she is and add 30. How convenient.

I just got a notice from the DMV that I am eligible to renew my license through the mail. That means I get to keep my picture from when I was 46 all the way until I am 56! You gotta love it!

OMG - EAT ALL RAW? YUK YUK YUK...what in the world do you EAT on that plan?

Robin - I literally laughed out loud when I read that! My daughter Chloe tries to eat RAW but it is all veggies and fruit. No meat. I have to agree that any diet that included raw meat is YUK YUK YUK. I had to go to a business lunch yesterday and our choices were limited. I ordered the rib-eye sandwich (thinking I would remove the bread) and when they put it in front of me, the meat that was hanging out the side of the sandwich looked RAW. I put my napkin over it and ate the side salad.

Robin - I feel like yelling at someone about the fact that you can't get on the computer from home! Arrrrgggggg!

Kate, Demi sounds like such a great person. My sister sounds just like her LOL. She has no problem speaking her peace. Sometimes though she needs to keep her piece to herself. Kathy - I just cringe when I hear some of the stuff that comes of that kid's mouth. Not because what she says is so bad but because it just shows how intolerant she is of others. I think it is because (at least in part) of what Robin said - she has such high expectations of everyone else. I keep reminding myself that she is only 21 and definitely doesn't seem to mind finding her way in this world. I told her that I was very proud that she didn't take on the "poor me" victim role about losing her job.

Robin - what's up with your computer? What OS are you using? Did you completely wipe it clean and reinstall?

Maybe we should try to let everyone know that we want them back no matter what? I think I will send Nell a message on FB.

I rent an office in a building with a bunch of other attorneys. I have been in the same place for over 9 years. The most drama in the building was when a male attorney had his wife work for him and he was having affairs!
OMG - that takes some balls.
Hmmmmm. Well, I don't drink Coke but that is very interesting about the difference between USA Coke and Mexico Coke. I just don't understand it. Why don't we use pure cane sugar? The sugar cane industry has nothing on the corn industry (living here in the midwest we hear alot) and their lobbying efforts. ADM is based just 30 miles from where I live. I have heard last year's movie with Matt Damon "The Informant" is good. It is based on illegal activities within these companies.

Too funny about adding 30 years to Demi's age. My son was born exactly 4 weeks before my 31st birthday - at least I can say I was only 30 when he was born, and 35 when my daughter was. Sometimes I feel so old. My BF is stopping by tonight to drop off her dogs for me to puppy sit for a couple of days while she and her DH go to the state basketball tournament. She is 1 year younger than I am and her oldest is 26 and married and her youngest is a Sr. in college. Obviously she started (and ended) much younger than I did. :lmao:

YUCK! I order my steak medium and on a good day (with a good steak) can deal with MR, but no way can I eat it rare, or even think of it raw.

I am glad she took the high road and hopefully she can learn from this. It is hard to just keep your mouth shut to "get along".

I am at the office today working on two federal bills. The copier is down until the new toner arrives today (don't even get me started on that one). I think I'll just put in my earphones and work away.

Oh yeah, I did 2 miles with the Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds CD last night. I will get back to exercising!

Robin: I thought about you when we were having the beef discussion. Isn’t it weird what we’ve gotten away from? Scary. We know some people that raise their own and if Tom ever agrees again, we’ll go that route.

Kate: Parallel lives strike again! I got to keep my license from 49 again this year. The lady in Macy’s said you look so much younger than your picture and I got to tell her that was when I was 49! Fun. J-P was born exactly one month AFTER my 30th birthday! We have the same numeral – 10 – so 2010 is our year.

My Mom made me cry last night. She gave J-P all of my grandfather’s scarves. They look brand new. She wrote him a note saying out of all the family, he is the most like Paw-Paw and how proud he would have been. She went on to say that she always thought her Daddy was so handsome with his overcoat and scarf on. I had been looking for a scarf for J-P and now I’m so glad I didn’t find one I wanted to buy because it’s much more special that his first ones belonged to his greatgrandfather.

Agree, when we talk about raw, we’re not talking about meat. It takes some prep, Robin, but the food is delicious. You might not like the flax crackers, LOL!

Beverly wanted to know what I am doing. It’s not a scientific experiment and I don’t know if I’ve ruined my liver, but I felt like trying it. I’m keeping any meal I chose to have carbs in to around 15 and not adding carbs if the menu doesn’t call for it, or I don’t feel like it. I’m not necessarily eating at night. I might have an apple in the afternoon. I am not eating anything that’s not on our approved list. So basically the same Step 2 as before, just not searching for the carbs to add if I don’t want to. The 3 lbs. is holding so it does seem to have perhaps kick-started an improvement. We’ll see.

J-P started dating one of his college classmates right after he graduated. She's older by about 5 years and has a beautiful daughter. They broke up when she got too serious and wanted him to live with her. He felt he wasn't ready and she was looking for someone to take care of her. Very mature of him, I thought. She's obtained a better job and he has hired her to work for him also. They've remained friends throughout. I think he might still really care for her. The strange thing is: Her daughter is named Adia, which is so beautiful. If I had been able to have a daughter, I was always searching for a prettier version of my Grandmother's name: Ada. I wonder if they will end up together, but I don't ask since he's kind of quiet about his love life.

P.S. I think he and Demi are too much alike, LOL! They would spin each other into butter.

Good Morning, I had sent out an e-mail to all the missing MM's a month ago, and heard back from a few...seems some are actually reading but not posting...dont know why? If you guys are reading, at least stop in and say hi!! we Miss You!!

Bev - I didnt clean out my computer, as everything is working for me still EXCEPT Disboards! It will let me log in, but when I go to post it says I am NOT logged in and no matter how many times I try it will not let me...sometimes says I have wrong passowrd, tried changing that, no go...so it is apparently an issue that happened to me when they did their last maintenance, and I just dont know how to fix it.

Kate - when I got my virginia license it was good for 10 years! OMG, and the picture isnt even a good one, LOL, I seriously think they need to test people more often then 10 years though! Glad Demi has a great positive attitude about all this...she will go FAR!!

Lisa - wow, 3 pounds, thats great!

Cindy - thanks for sharing that, and definitely let me know if you find new interesting recipes...I only eat red meat about once a week, and the rest of the time is chicken or turkey, sometimes tuna...so maybe could do the swith myself, or at least cut way back on meats and cheeses...sounds like it is working well for you!

Kathy - I just wish that all the needed foods for these plans werent so hard to get or so expensive! LOL, all the "cheap and easy" foods are bad for us!

Loving getting home that hour earlier...seems weird, but it makes all the difference in getting me to sleep earlier! Im sure more sleep would help with my cortisol levels...Jorge says that the 25-30g fiber a day is what will take away the belly fat, so Im researching the fiber in foods now to see which carbs will be best for that. I think his plan is more detailed too, because of watching the sugars in foods...like Lisa said, the sugar in my step 2 crackers, chips and certain fruits really messed with my blood sugar, so hopefully these more specific things wont do that.

Lisa - Try to watch Oprah today. Michael Pollan is on and they're talking about Food, Inc. I'm going to go and finish watching. Talk to you later!

Oprah is a rerun today - it was so popular the first time. If you miss it, rent Food Inc. a must see!

Robin: He suggests trying a meatless day in the week. Meatless Monday is easy to remember. Having just one veg dinner in the week would save huge amounts of resources for our country. Something kind of cool for families to implement and share the concept around.
