Geriatric mm warriors (12/30/09)

Hi everyone.

Gena, it's good to see you. I'm glad your back with us. You too Tom! And Laura, we missed talking with you all of the time. :) I too hope to hear from Bev soon.

Kathy, I'm glad your knee is getting better, but please keep being careful.

Lisa, I'm so sorry that you got injured so badly. At least the mystery is solved and we know it was a normal reaction to the heat and not a new medical problem that caused you to faint. I agree with Barb that god was definitely looking out for you. As much pain as your in, it could have been much worse. I'm praying for both you and Kathy to heal quickly.

Pony, your having a quiet day. Are you working long hours? I'd be glad to take the rest of your vegetable shakes if your sure your not going to be using them. Let me know and I'll send you money to send what you have left of it. No sense in wasting it and I like that stuff.

I'm doing pretty well today. I'm been very relaxed and sleepy. A down day. I feel as if I am healing in so many ways. If I spend just the ten days on step one, that will allow me to start on two on Monday. I'm thinking that makes more sense for me. My challenge I believe is going to be continuing to make vegetables make up 50% or more of my meals. It's easy with the smoothies. I was reading today that making smoothies with vegetables in them makes it a lot easier for the body to absorb the nutrients because the blender does a better job of breaking down the vegetable cell walls. I might start making blended salads. Supposedly they taste just like a salad but your drinking it. If I'm going to eat all these vegetables I want to make sure I actually absorb them. I think I'm starting to be on a serious health kick. Kind of weird, but I'm feeling better all of the time.

Well, I hope everyone has a lovely sleep tonight. Many blessings and hugs to all! :grouphug:

Hi my beautiful Nell! Wanted to give you my 2 cents about juicing. It's fantastic for you!!! When I did my detox basically all I ate were veges and I juiced them. My only problem with it is the clean up of my juicer is a pain in the butt. I would like to get back into it too but also add a little sweet apple to the mix as just juicing veges with nothing else, can be a little bitter. My favorite mix was cucumber, spinach and celery. Tomato would have been really good, but the detox didn't want you to use tomatos (fruit properties).

I'm so glad to hear you are feeling better!!! You are such a super inspiration. Muah! Love ya!

Hi Guys, got all tied up with work and meetings and just stuff yesterday and no time to post...got home at 1am and just collapsed into bed! We did NOT get any snow, thank goodness, so its just cold and windy this morning.

Lisa -- sounds like Tom is stepping up to the plate to take care of you...awww, he is definitely a keeper! PLEASE, be sure to take good care,, and hopefully no walking cast to mess up your ability to wear your new jeans!

Kathy - Ponyhair suits for us for SURE! Now I just have to get them to part with their cute new FUZZ!

Gena and Cindy - I found in the beginning that the site kept doing that to me too, log in, not logged in, drove me nuts! Maybe that happens when you dont post for awhile?

Gena - so glad Dad is safe and content in the new place and you can take a deep breath and relax a bit. Baby cows everywhere here too!

Laura - we have definitely missed our Water and Exercise police...I have still been doing my gym 4-5 times a week and cant imagine NOT doing it now! I do find that I need to change the routine from time to time or I seem to get used to the same old... I also noticed if I miss getting in all my water in a day my blood sugar is higher...weird!

Nell, Cindy and Kathy - OK, sorry but I must say...juicing your veggies into a big slimy mess that gums up your blender? :scared1: OMG, YUK YUK YUK!!!!
I've been throwing spinach and broccoli in just about everything...anything to mask the taste! LOL, too bad they dont make "savory" flavors of Davinci!!

I bought a juicer specifically for juicing. It's much easier than the blender, but the clean up is a killer!! The pulp does look pretty nasty, although the fruit is delicious!!!

Hope you are having a great Friday!!

I'd love to have our hot tub at 105 but Jeff can't even step into it unless it's cooler than 102. In the summer he likes it at 98...not too hot but I guess it has it's advantages...no fainting!!!!:scared1:

Hope you are having a peaceful morning!

I really like 103 for the setting and then it cools off a bit when you get it going with the jets. I shiver at 98! I hope that repair man calls me today so we can get that contoller fixed. I guess I'd better stay out of it for a good while. I'm swollen and using ice so no hot tub for me.:sad2:

Nell and Kathy: When Tom was juicing all the time, we found we loved cucumber for the fresh and energizing taste and aroma. Anything green is good to juice. On Step 2 you could add one piece of fruit to a serving if you count it as an 11 – 20. Tom found that one apple made a big difference. You can add your protein powders to your juice also. It’s a great way to get them down.

Robin: Juicing makes a liquid that isn’t at all slimy and is usually even sweet. It’s delicious. If we get back into doing it often again, I will want to compost the ‘leavings’ as I like to garden and would like to reduce waste as well. Try adding one slice of cucumber to water for an example of a taste enhancement you can't imagine. The first place I had that was at an upscale spa.

Laura: I misspoke when I said ¼ cup of berries in my shake. I use ½ cup. One serving on Step 2 is 3/4 cup for 15 carbs, so I cut it down to ½ so I could fit in my protein powder and rice milk. Hope that helps. It sure was good to get to go back to my ‘regular’ shakes today! Tom lost weight on the Step 1 10 days – I didn’t.

I feel better on Step 2 and got better results the first time so hope it continues to work well for us, especially since I'm supposed to be elevating my hurts and can't exercise right now. :scared1:

Ladies and Tom,

I will try again. First, let me say thank you for all the beautiful and thoughtful Christmas Cards. They were very much appreciated.

The last 6 months have been crazy to say the least. I think for now we are settled. My Dad has been in the nursing home a little over a month and is doing very well. I don't panic as often about him checking out. I think he realizes for awhile he needs to be there. I try to look at day by day instead of predicting the future. He is clean, fed, pretty content these days and I can't ask for more.

Needless to say I have been off the eating program since about mid October. I plan to get back Monday. I am on the tail end of a bladder infection. Tried all the natural things that normally work and finally went to the doctor.

I have a couple of questions. Is Julian bread still a freebie or a 5 x5? How much has everyone lost since starting? So many of you started in the summer.

Tom, hope y'all are not as cold. Tonight is suppose to really dip into the teens or lower. My hubby and I are having babies, calves and my Dad's cow's are dropping everywhere. It is amazing how mother nature takes care of them. We love round bales of hay, so much easier to feed than the square.

Lisa, I am so sorry for your fall. Thank goodness you didn't hit your head. I have done things like that and it happens so quickly. Just figure out what you can do and go with it.

Adios for now,
Gena

Hi Gena! I'm so glad things have calmed down for you and you're able to start thinking about yourself
I started the end of July. Went to step2 after the 8 weeks and found my waist growing and not going back down. Went back to step1. Went off plan the first part of Nov. when my daughter was here, off plan over Thanksgiving weekend, off plan again Dec 18th through last Monday. Not really binging but not on plan either. I've lost 27 pounds and happy with it. This is life, not a race. I have another 20 pounds to go and hope to have it off by my birthday in May.

Gena: Sorry I was remiss in not answering your inquiry about our results. I didn't keep a log but I started on July 28, along with my husband. I am losing at an average of one pound per week. I've lost 3 - 4 inches from all major areas and gone down a size in clothing. I don't have my husband's stats handy, but he's very happy with his results and has gone down nearly 2 pants sizes. It's been easy, slow and steady for us - nothing dramatic in a short time, but over time very pleasing results. I believe it takes commitment to the 'big picture' as we will lose this weight once and keep it off now that we know the keys to our 'special' MM condition. We've been really diligent in following the 'rules'. I think mainly because we are sick of failing at other diets. It's so great to have you back with us! I'm glad your Dad is taking this time to rest and that you can rest knowing he is in good hands.

Lisa - Being known as "She who falls" is one thing, but "she who faints and falls" is going too far. I hope you've learned to stay out of the hot tub if Tom's not there

LOL! I should never have revealed my nickname, lol! It's so true though! Poor Tom; he's watching me like a hawk. He's a Red Cross instructor so he wanted to call 911 in the worse way. He covered me with so many beach towels I couldn't move, lol!

Hi all! I am back from vaction and trying to get back into the swing of normal life.

Good Morning!

Lisa and Jocelyn - I finally bit the bullet and ordered the canned black soy beans on Amazon. I just could not find them anywhere around here.
I found them at Whole Foods, in the canned veggies. They were about $2.00/can.

Well, hello everybody!
I am re-starting Step 1 today. I will try to be more active here as well. It is hard because I do not have internet at home right now and have to do it at work. Facebook is much easier to browse and use under the boss's nose. Anyway, I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year.

tom k.
Hi Tom!

Happy New Year everbody!!! It feels so good to get back into the swing of things after the Holidays. I can't believe how busy I was  I miss you all very much and I am happy to be back at work where I have access to a computer all day. I can post things from my IPhone but sometimes it takes too long and drains the battery much faster.

I need your help guys, My 14 year old son went to the doctor today and to my surprise he is 5'4 and weighs..............165 :scared1: OMG he is a Met B. I have written an e-mail to Diane to see if anything is different for kids but I am going to need recipe ideas for him, he is not big on veggies (like his dad) and he is a picky eater and like me LOVES...................JUNK FOOD. :sad1:
Hey Laura! Good to see you too. I kind of twisted a knee at Zumba before we left for WDW, so I need to go back tomorrow a.m.

Are you sure your son just hasn't gained the weight and the height growth spurt is next to come? That's what both of my kids do.

On a sad note, my aunt died last night. She was 87 and fell and hit her head. She had massive bleeding and was put on life support. My cousins took her off yesterday and she died peacefully last night. She was a wonderful woman, but now she is with her husband and daughter with our Lord. Please include her in your prayers. Her name is Florence. Thanks.

Diane - Sorry to hear about your aunt.

In my mind's eye, we are at Jocelyn's sitting on the beach, looking mighty fine I may add, and just enjoying life. We have our iced green tea in a big glass too. I can see some ships out on the horizon, and the gentle breeze cooling us off a bit. I can hear the lap of the waves as they gently roll in and out, and sometimes they tickle our toes. We can hear the laughter of the children as they run trying to catch the waves as they slip out to sea. Then the sun begins to set, and we're just sitting there in a peaceful quiet reflecting on all the good things in our life. And at the same time, we look at each other, smile as we tap our glasses and toast all our new friends and our family and decide that yes, life is good.
Kathy - what a wonderful image. I'm there with all of you too!
Well, I have had a bad mishap so MIA today. Last night I took a hot tub alone because my shoulder had a muscle spasm. I got out before 20 minutes and it was 102 degrees so not too hot. I got to the door to the bathroom, which is just a few steps and I fainted onto the concrete and slid part way off of the top step. I'm very, very fortunate that I didn't hit my head, as it was hanging over the step when Tom got to me. I twisted something in my knee really bad and sprained the opposite ankle. It's black and blue and all of my toes are scuffed up. I had to crawl up the stairs to bed last night. Spent the night and day icing it and on Vicadin. I'm going to try to get to the doctor tomorrow. Needless to say, I have ruined my resolution to ramp up the exercise. I live in fear of an injury that takes me out of exercising since I gain so easily, but here I find myself again. Tom took the day off to look after me. He was really scared. I hope and pray there isn't anything torn in my knee. I can feel the injured part with my fingers. It's on the inside edge.

OMG Lisa - take care of yourself and let us know what the test results say.

Hey Bev...are you back? Saw your post on FB and just wondered why you werent back here with us yet!??

We got home Wednesday night, and I had planned to take yesterday off work to do laundry, have a day to recoup, etc. (enjoy the peace and quiet). Guess what? Snow day for the kids! They are home again today. Their last day of school was 12/22 (1/2 day) and they haven't been back yet. I came to work for some peace and quiet today. :rotfl:

I haven't been back on because I was trying to catch up on 14 pages of posts. I know I haven't spoken to everyone, and don't mean to ignore anybody, just can't keep up with it all. I'll do better from now on, I promise.

The last 6 months have been crazy to say the least. I think for now we are settled. My Dad has been in the nursing home a little over a month and is doing very well. Gena, glad to see you and very glad your dad is doing better.

Lisa, take care of yourself.

Well, I am back in "normal" land and am very pleased to say that with 2 "planned cheats" in the past 2 weeks, I haven't gained, and actually have lost an addition 3.25 lbs. since Christmas. I allowed myself movie popcorn and a piece of my DH's b-day cake on the 27th and one night on vacation the adults went out to eat at a Benihana type restaurant at WDW and I allowed myself to eat the noodles, rice and a little bit of dessert, but I jumped right back on track the next a.m. and don't seem to have had any ill effects. It's nice to know that the willpower is still there. I was afraid what any cheat would do, but I don't plan to have any more in the near future (unless we go to the movies, I love that popcorn).

well, I am at the office, so I will chat with you all later.

LOL! I should never have revealed my nickname, lol! It's so true though! Poor Tom; he's watching me like a hawk. He's a Red Cross instructor so he wanted to call 911 in the worse way. He covered me with so many beach towels I couldn't move, lol!

 You're lucky Tom didn't suffocate you with towels. When my daughter was here, I told her about "She who falls" She asked me if you were my lost twin :rotfl: I have a reputation for falling too. When we were in Puerto Villarta on vacation, I stepped out of the restroom and fell amid a group of people waiting to use the restroom. Another time we were looking at an open house and I stepped out the front door and tripped, ran flailing down the sidewalk trying to keep my balance and ran into the car. That's the only thing that stopped me  My Hubby is always on guard and takes my arm when we're stepping off steps or curbs.

Oh, Barb, how funny! We have to laugh at ourselves! Your husband sounds so sweet to look out for you. I think we are forward thinkers and our minds are on the next thing instead of our feet, lol!

Beverly: Welcome home! It's great to hear from you. I'm glad you didn't gain anything on vacation; that's really awesome! I probably should have eaten the movie popcorn - I can't stop thinking about it!popcorn:: We did go for sushi afterward, though, and that was a bit of a cheat, so I was afraid to double up in one day. Maybe someday! There's a huge new theatre complex near us with extra wide aisles, etc. They have a butter station where people go to put their own extra butter on. We convinced ourselves it was grosser than gross - almost, lol!:3dglasses Avatar 3 D was amazing!

Beverly, glad to see you back! Sounds like you had a good time and congrats on managing your eating so well :yay:

Well, I did the popcorn and birthday cake all within 5 hours so it only counted as 1 cheat for the week. That's my story and I'm sticking with it!:cool1:

We have Combined Insurance for Jeff too. It's wonderful. It's about $100 per month but definitely worth it. He had to go out on disability for surgery on his ankle and they sent us a check for him being out of work. Without much of a hassle either!

I have to agree with you that it's wonderful. I actually just picked up a cancer rider they are offering. For woman, they will send you a check for a mamogram and a pap too! In PA, I can get a check every year for the mamogram. There was one other state, can't remember right now, that also is each year for the mamogram. Actually the check will more than cover a year's worth of coverage for the rider. It costs me 19.99 a month. And God forbid, if I get cancer, I will get a monthly check for inpatient, outpatient, surgery, everything you have to deal with with cancer. I have accident and sickness through them also. So if I ever find myself in a situation where I become disabled by either, I'm covered. My agent said if Levi had Combined when he got injured (his eye) his checks would have been well over the $50,000.00 mark now. He has been off work and on comp for more than a year now. No doctor wants to release him and be liable because he still sees double when he looks to the side. Even the comp. doctors won't sign off on it. He has a hearing next week as comp wants to settle. Thankfully he does have an attorney. Right now comp is offering him a $125,000 settlement.
Sorry, started rambling LOL

Nell, Cindy and Kathy - OK, sorry but I must say...juicing your veggies into a big slimy mess that gums up your blender? :scared1: OMG, YUK YUK YUK!!!!
I've been throwing spinach and broccoli in just about everything...anything to mask the taste! LOL, too bad they dont make "savory" flavors of Davinci!!

Robin, we bought a Jack LaLanne juicer about a year ago. I absolutely love it. What I want to juice goes into the top "chamber" and comes out the shaft. I prefer fruits, but when I do veges, I make sure I put in either carrots or beets as they are actually sweet. All the ground up pulp, seeds, etc come out the back of the machine into another chamber. It is also VERY easy to clean. I can have it washed in about 5 minutes. You would actually love one too (hint, hint LOL) You can use the ground up skins in soups, meat loaf, etc. But I never have. I may use apple skins in cakes and such. I'd just make sure I core it first. Apple seeds I don't think we should eat, but not sure. I am thinking arsenic or something? I know cherry pits have arsenic in them.

Ladies,

Afternoon, thank you for all the welcomes and the results. I know this works I just need to do it. I do feel like I am back home and that is where I need to be right now. I just must take care of me...............

I have been going back and reading step 1 and all the rules as I know Diane put this together very specifically to work. I get in trouble when I start bending them.

It is so cold here today, at least for Texas. Wind chill is 4............I just hate it for the animals ,but they seem to take good care of themselves.

Hope everyone is staying warm,

Gena

Bev, so good to see you! Glad you had a good time in WDW. And isn't it nice to know we can go off plan with a cheat of sorts, and still be able to do what we need to? Even with all my off plan cheats, a month's worth, I gained weight, but seemed to still lose inches. Nell seemed to experience the same thing, although she didn't go off plan as long as I did. But the 10# I gained are now gone. Only a week! This WOE is so weird compared to what we are used to LOL.

My knee is doing much better today. I wrapped it in an ace bandage for about 4 hours at work today. It started bunching up behind my knee, so I took it off. No throbbing pain, just a tiny ache. I have gone from taking ibuprofen every 3 hours (taking 3 pills, 200 mg each) to taking 3 every 5-6 hours. Not too bad. If I take 2, I find I was taking them much more frequent. I didn't take an advil pm last night and only woke up once.

It has been snowing all day. Reminds me of a winter when I was a kid. A real winter LOL. Next week we are to go to 20*!

QUESTION! Someone was talking about using Silken Tofu. Lisa or Jocelyn I am thinking. What were you using it for? Desserts? And did you use the soft or the firm. I also saw flavored ones. Vanilla and chocolate. Did you just get plain?
I got more shirataki noodles for my soup and more of the spaghetti ones. And also an eggplant. I am thinking for supper tomorrow I am going to make eggplant parm. with the shiritaki spaghetti. Who would ever think I would eat tofu? :confused3 I find I like it better than normal noodles :woohoo:

Ok, off to read online for a while :surfweb: I need to do my fish isle and country living on FB.
