Geriatric mm warriors (12/30/09)

Robin, we bought a Jack LaLanne juicer about a year ago. I absolutely love it. What I want to juice goes into the top "chamber" and comes out the shaft. I prefer fruits, but when I do veges, I make sure I put in either carrots or beets as they are actually sweet. All the ground up pulp, seeds, etc come out the back of the machine into another chamber. It is also VERY easy to clean. I can have it washed in about 5 minutes. You would actually love one too (hint, hint LOL) You can use the ground up skins in soups, meat loaf, etc. But I never have. I may use apple skins in cakes and such. I'd just make sure I core it first. Apple seeds I don't think we should eat, but not sure. I am thinking arsenic or something? I know cherry pits have arsenic in them.

That's the one we have, too. It takes a ton of apple seeds to poison you, so don't worry.

Kathy: I'm glad you listened to your 'inner voice' about the cancer rider. I was thinking about getting it for the family and procrastinated just a few weeks to find myhusband had cancer. We also wanted to increase his life insurance at the same time. Thankfully, we were able to get more life insurance through his work during open enrollment without a medical check up so we can increase it every November now. What a huge mistake to wait on these things!

Hi everyone. The only thing about the juicing is that taking out all of the pulp isn't necessarily the best idea. It brings the carb count of the vegetables higher and some of the nutrients remain attached to the cellulose or fiber part of the vegetable. You don't absorb most of the cellulose, but especially if well blended, you can absorb some. I believe there is benefits to both juicing and blending, depending on what your looking for. I use less fibrous veggies in the blender. Pony, you can't even taste my veggies because I add ice and water and lots of baking cocoa!

It is a load of worry off my mind actually. Being self employed as you know makes you really stop and think certain things out. What if I get sick and can't work, what if I break my leg, etc.
I think my main worry was how long I smoked (sorry Robin and who else is it that smokes? Can't remember, sorry) and if I did any damage to myself. I figure my total amount in Combined insurance each month is around $65. To buy peace of mind, it's worth every penny. And chiropractor is covered! I left it there so my chiropractor can fill it out for me and pick it up next week.

Thank you for the heads up on the seeds. I know it would take a lot, but knowing how much I was juicing, there were a lot LOL. The one lady I clean for has one of the Green Machine (I think that's what they are called) and there are so many pieces to take apart and clean. They never clean the stuff well, and there are bits of carrots (that's all he will juice, and she won't do it for herself) on the parts after they wash it. It is so gross!! I make sure my juicer is cleaned well. I wash it by hand then put it in the dishwasher. Paranoid maybe, but clean LOL.

My dad was the only person I know who benefitted from waiting. He was mad at his insurance company and wanted to drop a life insurance policy. He dropped in on the agent without an appt. and the agent didn't have time for him, so dad was going back after the first of the year. He died January 3rd (about 2 weeks later). Luckily he hadn't cancelled the policy so the money was there for my mom.

However, the waiting to add my mom to his prescription policy kicked her in the butt. Open enrollment wasn't until 1/20 and he died 1/3. It took about 5 years, but she was finally allowed to join it. Thank goodness. Rx is so expensive!

Usually, though, don't wait!

Bev, so good to see you! Glad you had a good time in WDW. And isn't it nice to know we can go off plan with a cheat of sorts, and still be able to do what we need to? Even with all my off plan cheats, a month's worth, I gained weight, but seemed to still lose inches. Nell seemed to experience the same thing, although she didn't go off plan as long as I did. But the 10# I gained are now gone. Only a week! This WOE is so weird compared to what we are used to LOL.

My knee is doing much better today. I wrapped it in an ace bandage for about 4 hours at work today. It started bunching up behind my knee, so I took it off. No throbbing pain, just a tiny ache. I have gone from taking ibuprofen every 3 hours (taking 3 pills, 200 mg each) to taking 3 every 5-6 hours. Not too bad. If I take 2, I find I was taking them much more frequent. I didn't take an advil pm last night and only woke up once.

It has been snowing all day. Reminds me of a winter when I was a kid. A real winter LOL. Next week we are to go to 20*!

QUESTION! Someone was talking about using Silken Tofu. Lisa or Jocelyn I am thinking. What were you using it for? Desserts? And did you use the soft or the firm. I also saw flavored ones. Vanilla and chocolate. Did you just get plain?
I got more shirataki noodles for my soup and more of the spaghetti ones. And also an eggplant. I am thinking for supper tomorrow I am going to make eggplant parm. with the shiritaki spaghetti. Who would ever think I would eat tofu? :confused3 I find I like it better than normal noodles :woohoo:

Ok, off to read online for a while :surfweb: I need to do my fish isle and country living on FB.

Thanks!

Glad your knee is feeling better. I hurt mine when I went to a Zumba Mix class before vacation (trying to fit in one more before I left). Walking at WDW wasn't the most fun, but I did ok. I am trying to decide whether to go tomorrow a.m., or wait until Monday afternoon. Decisions, decisions.

Hi All,
I'm back from my aunt's funeral. Each way was a 3 hr. long drive, so it was an exhausting and emotional day. When we were growing up we went to her house every Christmas .... so many special memories.

Nell - I like blended salads. They taste exactly like salad - only you don't have to chew it! I also juice everyday. I used to have an Acme 6000 juicer, but couldn't find a replacement blade so I bought a Breville juicer at Bed Bath & Beyond. I had a 20% off coupon so it was a good deal. All the pulp goes into a container on the side that I line with a plastic grocery bag, so it makes clean up really easy. I wish I had a garden too make compost for - but I live in an apartment. :sad1:

It's snowing again. I don't think it's supposed to accumulate, but my son left to visit a friend in Pennsylvania about 45 min. away and I hate for him to be on the roads in bad weather. He just rolls his eyes and says O Mom. He called when he reached the highway to let me know it was all cleared. I still will worry. He said he'll call when he gets there.

I'm going to bed early tonight. I hope I can fall asleep!!! I'm tired.
I hope everyone has a good night!

Bev, sorry you hurt your knee. What is it with us all and knees? I really don't know what is helping. I started taking magnesium right after it happened, then yesterday was my 2nd chiropractic adjustment on it, and it is my 5th day of taking Osteo Bi-flex. I think I'll continue to take the magnesium and Osteo Bi-flex even after it's healed. Shouldn't hurt.
Isn't that something about your dad? Thank God he didn't get around to canceling his insurance! But too bad about the RX plan. I'm glad she finally got it, even though it took 5 years!!

Diane, I am sorry you had such an emotionally draining day. I hope your special memories help you get through this. It is so hard. Still sending prayers your way. Where was your son headed in PA? If I remember right there will still be lake effect snow later tonight. I am more South of I-80, so we are to be done with it soon. Our total from yesterday until now is 6 inches. I don't know how much we've gotten the last 2 weeks. How long will your son be down here in PA? Or is it just for the evening?

Kathy: You're supposed to balance your magnesium with calcium for some reason. Check on that if you can.

Diane: We moms are all alike! My son texts me the name of the city he passes through on his trips so I can worry less. This last time, he took a picture of his car and himself at the rest stop and texted me a picture with the name of the city. Very cute. I'm 53 and my parents still want us to call whenever we get where we're going. I hope your son has a great time and that he understands you're just doing your job as his Mom. He'd miss it if you didn't worry.

Kathy - He's going to Milford, PA. He's going to spend the night and come home tomorrow evening.

Lisa - You're right. I think he would look at me like I was crazy if I just said 'okay, bye now'. He's my one and only. It took me 4 years to get pregnant with him after one miscarriage. I never got pregnant again. I started Clomid, but it didn't work. I was married for 14 years to a guy who was a fantastic father (still is), but not such a faithful husband. We''ve been divorced for 12 years.

I've used silken tofu in smoothies. I forgot about that. I wonder what diet I was on then? :rotfl:

I will check on that for sure.

Your story of calling your parents even though we are adults reminds me of a couple years ago. We decided on Thursday night we were going to Atlantic City for the 4th of July holiday. We were to leave Friday late morning. Well, we pulled out at noon,:drive: and about an hour into the trip I realized I never called mom to let her know!:scared:  So I called her on my cell phone to let her know we were on our way to Atlantic City for 3 days LOL. I felt so guilty not even thinking of it. I was so excited to go, :hyper: as I had never been there. Mom had a good chuckle out of that one.

My week is Done!

Christmas is put away, I'm finished with work today and don't even have to fix dinner. :dance3: My DD 25 is making pizza for everyone. She said she found a crust recipe using spaghetti squash and mozzarella cheese.....I'm thinking that sounds kind of yucky, but if she's making it, I will eat it. She has lost about 30 lbs so far on MM and says she feels much better. She is able to kind of combine it with a low carb diet like Jocelyn and it works for her.

I have been on step 1 since monday and it's going okay. I had one slip last night as my BF brought over homemade cinnamon rolls warm out of the oven. I intended to have just a little sliver of one. I ate a whole roll and can't really say I regret it. They were awesome! On the whole though, I have done very well all week and am kind of surprised how easy it is to slip back into step 1. I think that all of us that were faithful to step 1 for those initial 8 wks have genuinely changed our eating habits and the kinds of food we put in our bodies. I have become so aware of the carb counts in regular bread, pasta, fruit, and prepared foods that even when I wasn't eating on plan, I couldn't bring myself to go back to how I ate before. What a great blessing this is! I don't find myself thinking that some day, when I've lost the weight, I can go back to eating "regular" food as some kind of reward. NOT!

Thank you all for being so supportive and for being here with all your posts of challenges and helpful advise on how to get through tough situations.

Blessings for healing of boo boos for Lisa, Kathy, Beverly, and anyone else that hurts. Here's a kiss for your boo boo :love2:

Prayers and comfort to Diane at your loss.

Pony, say "Hi" to Dennis and Rick and good wishes to ya'll. I will join you in the vote of YUCK for blended or juiced vegies. Have tried them many times before and my throat just won't let them go down.

Looking forward to a nice weekend with temps in the 70's still. What can I say..I would like some rain and all of you back east would like our sun. I'm sorry. You all are free to stop by, take off your snowsuits and boots, put on your shorts, prop up your feet and soak up a few rays. We could go to the beach, take a nice long walk and watch the sun set towards Jocelyn"s house. It would be Grand!

Love you,
Carol

Carol - I would love to know how the pizza crust turns out. Sounds interesting.

Diane: Silken tofu makes the best smoothies! Very smooth. We are similar. It took us 8 years to have our only son. We never could have another child. I took Clomid also and wonder now if the growth hormones I took to produce eggs could have set me off on a weight gain path?? I was about 130 lbs. at that time and I’m 5’6”. It wasn’t until after he was born that I began to really struggle. Interesting thoughts, but I’d do it all again anyway!

Carol: Be careful or you really will find us on your porch! It’s foggy and cold here and that’s not doing much to help my boo boo’s! I think you are very right about how we’ve learned different habits. I’d like to encourage anyone who had trouble with Step 2 – while you are on Step 1, if you plan to go back to Step 2, take note of the way you are eating at least every 5 hours on Step 1. Step 2 is basically the same except you just plan on adding the 11 -20. If you have the carbs picked out for every meal and probably one snack per day, it becomes so easy. Tom’s making taco salads or tacos tonight and he’s got all the possibilities figured out – tortilla with ¼ cup beans added or salad with beans and a few chips. Can’t wait!

Kathy: Call your Mother! LOL!

I posted the recipes in the recipe forum. :)

Jocelyn, do you want me to post your pancake recipe also? I saved it if you want me to.

Thanks, that would be great. We even had them for breakfast this morning. yummy.

I'm trying to catch up on the posts, but have to leave shortly.

Pony - can you tell where the carbs in your shake come from? If they are from the veggies it might be OK for you to still use it if the veggies in it are free ones. Veggie carbs add up, but you don't think about them since they are free here. On other low carb diets that is not the case.

Okay, the pizza was great! The crust was made from cheese, spaghetti squash and eggs. Diane, I will post the recipe and the sauce recipe on the MM recipe thread. I looked for that thread for awhile yesterday before I found it on the second page of W.I.S.H. page. I didn't know there was a second page so if any one else has had problems finding it, that's where it is.
Seriously, the pizza was very good. We had salami, cut up tomatoes, fresh mushrooms, onions, and olives on top. My DD thought that next time she might try adding garlic to the crust or maybe some spices....but it was good just the way it was. Those that are missing pizza would be happy with this.

Yes, Robin, you could eat this even though it's made with squash. You really wouldn't know that's what's in it.

I will have to try that for sure! Yesterday when I wanted to post the muffin recipes, I found the recipe forum on the 3rd page of WISH. Maybe we need to do a few "bumps" to keep it up on at least the first 2 pages.
The couple times I tried the spaghetti squash, I didn't really care for it. I microwaved it for almost 15 minutes, and it still was somewhat crunchy when I ate it. Did I do something wrong?

Good morning everyone! No snow last night YAAAA! But it is a whole 7* out now. To everyone who lives where it's warm, Robin, Bev, Diane, and the rest of us "cold" people will be at your house later this morning. We will be staying a week at each of your houses. We are going to pack light as we are counting on it being at least above 40* where you are.
I actually love the snow, but can't take the cold. Once I get chilled, I'm cold all day. Like I'm chilled to the bone and can't get warm. I have to go to work this morning, but I'm waiting until at least 9 or 10 so it may warm up a bit. I will even take the 20* they are calling for next week.
I want to try to go to Monroeville this weekend to see if Sam's Club has my syrups. I need vanilla, as I'm completely out. I thought of using pure vanilla extract, and thought I'd better check the ingredients. They put high fructose corn syrup in it!! I wish I could find some vanilla beans, then I could just make my own with splenda.
Nice and quiet this morning. Everyone is still sleeping. Tyson got us up around 6 as he was cold. So he laid on the bed and I couldn't fall back asleep. He and Mike are snug as bugs in bed LOL. But Tyson seems to think he needs to lay sideways on the bed.
I'll check back later. Hope you all had a restful night's sleep and staying warm.
Lisa, I hope you're feeling a bit better today. Please take care of yourself and don't walk too much on the ankle and knee.
Robin, how is Dennis doing? Still saying prayers for him. Thank God he managed to get through Christmas. I'm still hoping for a miracle. They do happen.
Diane, saying a prayer your son gets home with no problems. I would imagine the roads are cleared now. Just cold BRRRRR.
Carol, glad you enjoyed your cinnamon roll. Just don't do it too often ;) I wouldn't be able to stop at just 1!!
Everyone else, HI to you!!
:grouphug:

Good Morning folks...already at work for another long long day, just checking in quickly before I hit the phones.

Took the plunge and hit the scale at the gym last night, hadnt weighed since first of December, and scale says another 6 pounds gone! Yay! So that is 30 for me total...still do NOT see where it has gone! Mostly from my legs and butt still! LOL, but I do see a bit of decrease in the belly these days so hopefully it will continue to "deflate".

The pizza crust sounds like something I could deal with, and garlic goes into about everything I make! Cant wait to try that one. I found a yummy sounding "cheeseburg soup" recipe online yesterday, combine ground turkey, frozen veggies, chicken broth and some seasonings, then add fat free half and half and shredded cheddar....may try that tomorrow!

Also saw an egg salad recipe that just combines the chopped eggs with cottage cheese and some dill...it was rated high by a number of readers, so may try that one too!

Hope you all have a great day and I will check in with you later!

BTW, Dennis started chemo again, so is pretty weak and nauseous, but doing better than expected at this point. Thanks for the continued prayers and thoughts!

Kathy,
It sounds like you might not have cooked the spaghetti squash long enough. I wash mine and poke it about 3 times with a knife and put it in the microwave whole for 8 mins. Then I check it and turn it over and nuke it for about another 6-8 mins. It should look kind of shiny and be rather translucent when done. A knife pokes in very easily. If you overcook it, it will turn to mush. When it's done, it still has just a little bit of crunch....kind of like al dente pasta. I know that I cooked it a few times for my family years ago and no one liked it because I didn't cook it enough. Now, we all LOVE it. It tastes buttery and has just a little firmness when it's cooked right. Even if you don't like it plain, in the crust recipe you really can't tell it's there.

Good luck and hope it turns out for you.

Carol
