Genius or crazy ~ Milk idea...

Here's another idea, just don't drink milk. Neither you nor your kids need it. Humans are the only mammal that actually drinks the milk of another mammal. Cows have 4 stomachs and there's a reason, it takes 4 stomachs to properly digest cows milk. No other mammal continues to drink even it's own milk after infancy. So why do we do it? Because we're brain washed into thinking it's healthy. If you take vitamins, and eat a healthy diet you will get everything you need nutrition wise without it.

My son hasn't had a drop of milk since he was 2 and when we do his annual blood work all comes up perfect.

The only ones benefiting from people drinking milk is the dairy farmers and the people who sell the milk.

I agree ~ but I don't fully depend on milk for nutritional value - again I don't think we really need it, it's just nice to have sometimes.

Yeah, I agree. My DH is completely a milk freak and me and DS don't drink it except rarely. DH and I try not to talk about it because, we do NOT agree. We get our calcium from other food.

All cattle are ruminants, meaning they have a digestive system designed to process plant material in conjunction with regurgitation and rechewing, regurgitated food material is called 'cud'. ('cows' does not refer to any animal whatsoever, it is only the adult female of many animals out there).

'4' stomachs is a commonly stated misconception, they have 1 with 4 compartments - rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum, with the rumen being the largest compartment. The reticulum is the smallest compartment. The omasum's main function is to absorb water and nutrients from the digestible food. The abomasum is like the human stomach, this is why it is known as the 'true stomach'. Cud is continually regurgitated, rechewed and further digested by specialised microbes in the rumen. These processes of cud chewing and continuous digestive processes are what allow cattle and other ruminants the ability to consume grasses, plants and vegetation that contain cellulose and other difficult to digest chemical compounds.

The only time I have milk is with my cereal, but my husband and kids drink a ton of it. Did it effect the taste compared to real 1% milk?
It's not something I would do since they drink 1% anyway but I'm curious.

Hsmama, good points, lol. I use almond milk, glorified water! We are water drinkers, but i will buy flavorings for variety. :)

Watering down water reminds menif a childhood friend on base. Their mom watered down powdered milk and separated double ply tp.

Personally, I would rather water it down a little than to drink powdered milk. YUCK!!

Even tried mixing it half and half with regular milk--YUCK!!

Lou Ferrigno (the Incredible Hulk) did just the opposite when he was starting out in bodybuilding competitions. He had no sponsors and couldn't afford expensive protein supplements so he added a package of powdered milk to regular whole milk for a cheap but effective protein shake.

Watered down milk just sounds terrible. I'd find another way to save some money.

This just is not true. Cows have one stomach with four compartments, which have not evolved to digest milk! To put it very briefly, cows have a rudimentary digestive system which helps break down the complex plant products they eat. You can look up the details of cow digestion on Google if you are really interested.

Think about it. Why would an animal have a four chambered stomach to digest milk, which it consumes for only a very brief time?

How is skim, 1% and 2% milk made ~ adding water to whole milk right?

Wrong, as others have already stated. You are free to do this, just keep in mind that you aren't getting as much nutrition as you would if you hadn't diluted your milk (this is important if you are giving this to children) and it must taste terrible.

truth is we should all just drink water most of the time, nothing else. and as for vitamins....ever check the label of bread,or cereal? they add a c***load of artificial vitamins to those things anyway...
OP-have fun watering down your milk! if you fam doesn't mind,it'll keep them healthier anyway!

We rarely eat cereal, because it is full of crap. But it's still good once in a while. ;)

As far as bread goes, here's the ingredients list for my bread ~ unbleached unbromated wheat flour, water, salt, yeast. I'm willing to pay $4 a loaf to keep the crap out.

IMO, the OP was getting defensive because a number of of posts didn't support her "recipe" for making 3 gallons of 1% & 2% milk out of a gallon of whole milk. She probably should have googled how milk is processed before turning her family's milk into milk flavored water.

Nope, even after googling and finding out what I really did I'm still fine with my decision and will probably continue doing it! Defensive - just showing that even with full knowledge I'm ok with what I did.

If he could lose some weight, why don't you switch to skim. You lose the fat but keep the protein.

He won't even drink 1% milk *knowingly* he's super picky about milk and drinks a lot of it.

As other posters have noted, the nutrition lost in watering down the milk can be easily replaced in other ways. If your kids need something white and liquidy to make their cereal soggy and they don't mind the taste then by all means go for it.

:thumbsup2

I had a bowl of Cinnamon Life last night with "my" 1% milk - it was fine, I might not add quite as much water next time but it really wasn't a problem.

Agreed. You probably ruined your DH's day by doing this. Do you want a map of something?

What??

To me, it seems to be too much effort when you can just buy it as 1%.

Just out of curiousity--Do you plan to tell him at some point that you've switched the milk? Has he expressed concern about his weight?

No. She actually made 2 gallons that were 1/4 milk and 1 gallon that was 1/2 milk according to her first post.

Got it. :) still way ugh!!!!

My husband would be peeved if I did something like that to him. I don't think it is nice to be sneaky about it. It reminds me of when the juice company was making sugar water rather than apple juice.

It's a little known fact that Sangria will both improve the quality of your life and extend its expectancy... I serve it at every gathering. :)

Since you guys are oh so helpful about drinking the margaritas, how about the homemade Sangria I had this weekend. Good friend of mine and her DH made some, it was to die for.

Wait, it had fruit in it, so it must be good for you.:goodvibes

Watered down milk just sounds gross  . I hate how watered down skim milk tastes so I do not think I could stomach watery milk.

Just out of curiousity--Do you plan to tell him at some point that you've switched the milk? Has he expressed concern about his weight?

I told him last night ~ at 1st he did not believe that I've added some water to every 2% gallon of milk we've had in our fridge *we've been married since late Feb.* he was amazed that he could not tell the difference. Weight ~ Yes he has and he's working at lowering it.

I grew up drinking a tall glass of milk with dinner. I still love a glass of milk with a meal, but a glass filled with ice cubes THEN add milk, now THAT is a treat! Can't beat ice cold milk!

For a while we HAD to have 2% for DH while the rest of us drank skim. That habit changed pretty quick one night when he got up @ 0200 to raid the kitchen for cookies and milk. There only was SKIM since he'd finished his 2% with a bedtime snack. Sooo by morning the rest of the gallon of skim milk was history, with not even a drop of milk left. Yea. On a school morning. Since that incident I only buy skim.
