Genius or crazy ~ Milk idea...

Lol, and the people who like it. Folks drink all kinds if things that aren't great for them. Banning it entirely seems a bit extreme, but whatever works for you.

Watering it down is nasty.

I agree with those saying it isn't good for you, because it isn't. It never has been never was. Now, if you like it, then fine. I just get so tired of the dairy industry and silly moms that insist that milk is good for you.

There is a reason that so many people can't digest it, we weren't made to drink it, Then again we weren't made to drink margaritas but I LOVE them.:thumbsup2

Seriously? Some people amaze me. You're getting lambasted over milk? :confused3 Dear Lord in heaven. Your kids , do what ya feel! No one will die if you water it down.
:)

Well, you're pretty darn amazing yourself! Did you read the OP's original post? She asked for opinions and she got opinions. IMO, the OP was getting defensive because a number of of posts didn't support her "recipe" for making 3 gallons of 1% & 2% milk out of a gallon of whole milk. She probably should have googled how milk is processed before turning her family's milk into milk flavored water.

Cows have 4 stomachs and there's a reason, it takes 4 stomachs to properly digest cows milk.

That's not true. Cows have four stomach compartments (not separate stomachs) because they eat grass and they don't chew their food before they swallow it. It has nothing to do with digesting milk.

If you state things that aren't true to bolster your cause, it makes people believe that your cause is ridiculous.

Yep ~ I just did some googling and saw that they don't add water they just remove the fat

Yes, that's where skim milk gets its name. The fat is "skimmed" off the top of the milk.

I know some people do put ice in their milk, so same concept.

Not quite the same, depending on how quikly you drink the ice milk. :)

Yes, but margaritas are good for you too! They're cheaper than therapy!! :lmao:

When I drink orange juice I fill about ¼ of the glass with water and the rest OJ because the acid gives me horrible heart burn. This method seems to help but I did not realize that diluting it was screwing with the nutrients which is why I drink it in the first place.

Really? It didn't occur to you that if you are only drinking 1/4 of the serving size on the package, you are only getting 1/4 of the nutrients per serving listed on the label?

I am not being sarcastic at all, but honestly wondering, since when I drink juice, it is usually for the flavor, no the nutrients, and I dilute it 1:3 with water to cut calories.

I actually have no clue and was just going off the information here. Does anyone know how it affects juice?

I was reading this thread and wondeing if anyone was going to mention this.

OP, I think if your goal is to save money and still have the taste of milk to drink or use in cereal then your plan is great. If you are trying to lighten the fat content or are drinking milk soley for nutritional purposes then your plan doesn't work.

Lol, perfect example.

It affect juice the same way that would affect any other liquid. If you're diluting it with 1 part water and 3 parts juice, then you are cutting the nutrients in an 8 oz. serving to 3/4 of what it was in the undiluted juice.

In the milk example that the OP gave, her "1% milk" was made with one part milk and three parts water. So the nutritional value of one cup of her brew would be only 1/4 that of one cup of the undiluted milk.

If you dilute the juice, of course you're diluting the amount of vitamins you're getting. If a serving size is 8 ounces and you're mixing 4 ounces of juice with 4 ounces of water, you'll only get the amount of nutrients in 4 ounces of juice, so you'll get half of what's listed on the oj label.

Since you guys are oh so helpful about drinking the margaritas, how about the homemade Sangria I had this weekend. Good friend of mine and her DH made some, it was to die for.

Wait, it had fruit in it, so it must be good for you.:goodvibes

Look at the nutrition information on any label, choose your serving size and make the necessary adjustments to the rest of the nutritional values. If you are using a 1/4 cup but the serving is 1 cup all nutritional values are cut by 75%. I have had lapband surgery, so I don't hold very much volume at any given time, I am always trying to fit as much nutrition into a small amount of volume as I can. I use 1/4 cup skim milk and fortify it with additional dry milk to up the protein content. I do the same with juices but add protein powder rather than powdered milk.

Plus the limes help to ward off scurvy!:thumbsup2

And the alcohol acts like a disinfectant, so you don't need to even wash the glass! (Think of the savings on hot water and soap!) :lmao:

And if you use table salt instead of the fancy-schmancy salt to rim the glass, you get the iodine benefit for your thyroid as well. :thumbsup2

Well I have added a bit of water to DH's 2% *without him knowing ~ again he drinks a lot and could lose some weight* and he hasn't complained ~ I drank some one morning and it tasted fine to me ~ and I'm picky about milk, refuse to drink it after it's sat out and gotten a little warm *even after it's been chilled again* - that ruins it for me.

If he could lose some weight, why don't you switch to skim. You lose the fat but keep the protein.

Yes, but too much sugar! A really good margarita doesn't have sugar added to it. Just Tequila, Cointreau, and Lime Juice. :drinking1 :cloud9:

Actually, I don't use margarita salt. Just use kosher salt, it's cheaper and still coarser than table salt.

since lots of pp's here like to argue..... how about this? drink water,it's better for you than juice or milk!:thumbsup2 then again, I HATE water on my raisin bran in the morning....:rotfl2:...You know what everyone? there's a time and place for various drink options...and I don't think OP is crazy for watering down the milk...I've done it before myself, when it was winter, couldn't get to the store for more....just added water to top off the gallon- as long as no one noticed,I don't care!:thumbsup2
same as juice, which is nutritionally supposed to be BAD for you, I don't care....drink it full on,or water it down,I drink things for the taste, not necessarily what I'm thinking of as nutrition....
truth is we should all just drink water most of the time, nothing else. and as for vitamins....ever check the label of bread,or cereal? they add a c***load of artificial vitamins to those things anyway...
OP-have fun watering down your milk! if you fam doesn't mind,it'll keep them healthier anyway!

As other posters have noted, the nutrition lost in watering down the milk can be easily replaced in other ways. If your kids need something white and liquidy to make their cereal soggy and they don't mind the taste then by all means go for it.
