General Star Wars Discussion

Ghorman:

Rylanz taking out Syril to save Cassian as he pauses from being asked “Who Are You?” was a nice touch for further making Syril feeling insignificant to everything going on.

Syril wasn’t so much of a believer when he saw what the Empire was truly about, and upon realizing that Dedra had been keeping the secret destruction of Ghorman from him.

Dedra showing her own cracks from her ambition because of her betrayal of Syril, but she’s still for the time being behind the cause of the Empire.

K2’s origin fittingly added in to the series.

Genevieve O’Reilly’s delivery of Mon Mothma’s speech in the Senate was excellent.

Benjamin Bratt was easier to view after the brief intro earlier on as Bail Organa, he did well for his part of the story there.

Bix leaving Cassian was a surprise over her just dying, though still another 3 episodes for that to potentially happen to him.

This show is such a gift and I've enjoyed every moment. The writing is so top notch and Gilroy's ability to build tension is superb.

This show actually made me feel sorry for Syril. His hatred was his downfall. He was redeemed but then he couldn't let go of what Cassian did to him, only to not even be remembered. And his poor mother, sitting there waiting for news. And thank the Maker, the man knows how to write the Force the way it should be written. Mystical, a religion. He did the same in Rogue One. They even had a great nod to Mon's Rebels speech.

I am late on watching this week due to having to travel for a family funeral. I am headed home later today though, but won't get caught up until tomorrow. I've got Tales of the Underworld AND Andor (plus T-bolts) to get after!

Tense, tragic, so sad. Episode 8 was one of those tragic events, where you know how horrible it's going to be, and you're watching it all play out. Very much like events you read about from World Wars. Ep 9 also brought tension. Even knowing 100 percent that Mon and Cassian survive of course, it's so tense and well done. Was as well done as the prison episodes of season 1

Agreed. I am not a prequel guy at all. I like moving forward in a story and not going backwards because there's just never enough tension when you know the fates of the existing characters. This show is very unique because I felt as much tension in the scene of Mon and Cassian escaping as the Ghorman massacre. Gilroy is obviously a Les Miserables fan because that was very reminiscent of the final act. The writing in this show just runs circle around a lot of modern television. The tragedy of Rylanz seeing what was coming and not being able to stop it. Then getting at least to take out Syril for his betrayal of the people for law and order. Like I said before, we have to enjoy this show because there's never going to be anything like it in Star Wars going forward. This show is a black swan.

I could be completely wrong but with Bix just leaving instead of something else happening to her and Diego saying we wouldn’t watch Rogue One the same after this season I feel like we’re getting set up for Bix potentially being pregnant when she left and that making Rogue One an even bigger sucker punch ending if that gets revealed in the next batch of episodes. Just a feeling I have but who knows. I’m still firmly team RebelCaptain though haha I also really like the theory that Dedra might be on Scarif when it all goes down but I guess we’ll see how it all plays out next week.

I’m so sad the show’s nearly over though and wish we could have had another season or maybe another 3 episodes between this arc and Rogue One because just in my opinion, I felt like this arc especially was very rushed and that we don’t really get a lot of time to sit with things. The editing felt a bit off and disjointed for these episodes too with how quickly things were jumping around

My concern on the last three episodes is that it’ll feel rushed to get all of them into place for the events of Rogue One. Hoping to be wrong

I think Dedra gets assigned to the Death Star and that's the last we see of her.

I have a sneaking suspicion Bix is gonna be at Scarif, too. Maybe on the Profundity.

Well since we're all speculating

I think Bix is gone. Maybe there's a reference or a cutaway to her in the final arc but K2SO will be her stand-in as the person Cassian relies on. I think Lonni and Luthen uncover the Death Star being a weapon and getting the information out is what leads to their end. I think Dedra's arc will be the opposite of Vel's in regard to losing the person they loved for the cause. I think Dedra leans more into being a psychopath and finding Axis which she'll end up doing by finding out Lonni has been the spy all along. This leads to Kleya and Luthen. Her reward is either she's assigned to Scariff or the Death Star.

Question about Bail Organa in "Andor" S2E9:

Did he know that the three people assigned to get Mon Mothma away after her speech were unreliable? I don't think so, but the writers had me wondering for a while when Luthen told Cassian that he had to keep Mon away from them.

Bail admitted to Mon that he didn't know the people personally, and he's a good guy, right? So he was the unwitting accomplice to some evil plot?

Were those three people ISB plants who were going to arrest Mon?

So this was really easy to miss in the episode. One of the ISB officers refers to the female agent as one of Lieutenant Jung's agents - Lieutenant Jung is Lonni. What I think happened is that Lonni either tipped off Luthen, or (more likely) he deliberately planted a very sloppy ISB agent in with Bail's team because he knew ISB would try to arrest Mon, and then tipped off Luthen so he could get her out.

It's a good question. I think it's more just showing how much double dealing there is and how you're not really sure who you can trust. Bail had to be a step removed from everything to maintain appearances. It also might be Gilroy having a little fun with the line Bail says in Rogue One when Mon asks him if he trusts the person he's sending to pick up "your Jedi friend" and he says "I would trust her with my life" which is his daughter, Leia. I think it's also to blur the line on whether Luthen's paranoia is in fact founded or is he like Saw where he's just distrustful and paranoid of everyone. It's really great writing by Gilroy because it amped up the tension even more. I mean we all know Mon and Andor get away but the means to do it was the unknown. I think the two males were legitimate people hired to get her out.

Obv we will find out next week, but if this is 5 years before R1, will it most likely finish there? Or will it compress closer to Cassian appearing in R1? If not, they could do more Andor seasons correct, or haven't they said.

Both seasons cover the 5 year lead up to Rogue 1

Season 1 was 5 BBY
Season 2 Episodes 1-3 : 4 BBY
Episodes 4-6 : 3 BBY
Episodes 7-9 : 2 BBY
Episodes 9-12 : 1 BBY - 0 BBY (Around the time of Rogue 1)

There won't be any more seasons. This will end directly on the dawn of Rogue One. I'd imagine the final shot/arc is Cassian being sent to Kafrene to find the informant.

I sincerely appreciate how well the Empire characters are written as competent and normal people that are doing horrible things. This and that the show does not need to rely heavily upon characters that were established by the Original Trilogy or the Prequels to write the characters and their stories is so refreshing. Well done. Too bad LucasFilm put this on D+ instead of figuring out a way to make a feature film and put this thing in a theater. Oh well.

Ah ok, that makes sense thanks.

Yes has it only been Bail and Mon so far? Only Saw and K2SO from Rogue?

Okay, I got caught up.

Tales of the Underworld
This was generally good stuff. I think I liked the Ventress arc better - that was interesting. Her bounty hunter "friends" were neat. I figured I would have liked Ban'es arc more since I like the character so much, but I'm not sure it needed to be told. It was super predictable - not that it was bad or anything, just kinda nothing specail. It stue looked great all around though! Good stuff.

Andor
I have thoughts. There were certainly some high points - the Ghorman massacre was just so well done! That said, Syril was too interesting to die yet. I think it was kind of fitting that he just ends up inconsequential, but I wish it had been in the next arc, just to get more of him. It was powerful that Rylanz, who didn't want to fight, had to. Not enough Luthen in this set! I did like seeing what's-his-name from Rogue One on Yavin. Also, I do agree that some of it felt a little rushed and terse. Nothing too bad, but it's not my favorite arc so far. I would have liekd to see some about Mon's family - are they in any danger now? Maybe they will address that next. There seemed to be no consequence for Wilmon after his exposure to Saw's goofy-juice. That may be a small flaw in the time-skip device. They also sort of dropped Bix using drugs too.

Benjamin Bratt is about as close to Jimmy Smitts as you can get, so if they ahd to recast, I mean, that's what you do.

Also, I did want to chime in about Mon's speech vs. the one in Rebels - which is apparently her second speech or whatever was said after holonet was cut off. Rebels is a different show with a different intent. It's not supposed to be as nuanced and complex - not that Rebels isn't great (peak Star Wars really). I don't think comparisons are apt - they each are what they are, and both quite good at what they do.

My hopes for the last arc - Partisans/Saw on Jedha, maybe with a little glimpse of the temple there that gets raided and a couple of familliar guardians. Dedra can't face-turn. In fact, I hope she lives and get's elevated. K2 being awesome and funny - Let's have LOTS of that!
