General Star Wars Discussion

I'll see what tomorrow brings. I"ve loved this show WAY more than I ever could've expected. When it was announced, I was like, ugh, kids and silly creatures/droids in Star Wars...the worst! (always loved Jude law tho..) but I sure was wrong!!
I think a lot of people probably took breaks from their Disney + for a while. I considered it. I didn't think I'd care about anything this year except Daredevil and Andor, but then Skeleton Crew was quite the surprise. Hope the numbers will improve. My son hasn't watched it, but might when all the episodes are out. Another co-worker is planning to do that too, just binge them all at once, so maybe that's what's happening with a lot of people, just waiting until all episodes are available.
I'm good if it's just one season, but there's other pirate tales to be told I think. if not in a season 2, in some sort of way. Good with either....looking so forward to the finale!

I absolutely do think that they could pick up with some of the characters, but not necessarily in a Season 2. Actually, I thing that's generally the best way to do it - just a lot of standalone seasons that have some connection.

I have read that while initially the viewership (in minutes) was low, that it has improved and is now the number one show on Disney+ in January 2025. I think the holidays might have had soemthing to do with it, plus people just waiting to get started on it. Strong word of mouth can't hurt either. Hopefully it has legs.

That said, I don't really care if it has a season 2. It's great, but it can stand alone and still be great. The kids are already a few years older than they were when the show was filmed. I am good with just leaving it be. Of course, they have to give it a proper ending with full closure. That was the worst thing about The Acolyte - just assuming season 2 is a given and providing no closure. Every season of a show should always be a complete narrative.
Can you link an article? I haven’t read this and would like to know more about it.

It is ok. Although I am enjoying it, it is not my favorite, I preferred the characters from the Acolyte, Mandoverse, Ahsoka, and Andor. I do not have the sentimental Goonies nostalgia as I never saw that movie Before the BUT BUT BUT... I know it was awesome for so many, that is wonderful... kids are not my thing. Kinda hope it wraps up with the finale tonight. I either want a commitment that a show will have XX number of multiple seasons... or I prefer one and dones. Hate being left with an unfinished story line.

I cannot believe you haven’t seen The Goonies. That may be the most shocking thing I have ever read that you wrote, and that’s saying something.

LOL I had a feeling someone would have to say that. My own husband has also remarked the same thing when I fessed it to him.

I do not do a lot of movies in general, now or really even growing up. I would have been a sophmore in high school when Goonies came out in 1985. When I do see a movie on the big screen they are usually fantasy, sci fi, horror, or monsters. Last year the two movies I saw in the theater was Dune and Kong-Godzilla... this year has started with Nosferatu. I am not much into comedies... same with TV.

A maybe the views are lagging, but I have yet to see this show making any of the top 10 streaming viewership list. Does making the top on Disney+ matter if you aren’t even on any of the overall streaming lists?

Why has the casual SW fan soured on SW so much?

Seems like you were a tad old for The Goonies to hit that nostalgia spot. I get it. Then agian, I didn't even see The Goonies as a kid - well, I might have watched it on TV, but didn't have a copy and didn't watch and re-watch it until I re-discovered it when I was a bit older. Of course, it is very similar to the many 80's things that I do have nostalgia for, so it hits me just right. Skeleton Crew does too. I know they touted it as The Goonies meets Star Wars, but they weren't just saying that! It's so Goonies that I'm surprised that nobody has yelled "Hey, you guys!" yet! 🤣

The streaming issue is kind of a complicated question. Do you compare to other services? If D+ has the subscriber numbers that htey want to see, then does it matter if a show on Netflix is doing better? It's kind of like network television - yes, a show does compete against the others in it's timeslot, but it also competes against the other shows on it's own network. That can be an even bigger factor when deciding renewals. So, if it's number 1 on D+ what else are they going to sink money into? That said, I am not sure it is a lock for renewal, nor am I sure that it is needed or expected. I do think that in the long-run they will be pretty happy with it and it will hold up well due to the strong, positive reception.

On a side note, it has also moved some Black Series figures! I haven't seen the kids once in the wild, while I did find one Brutus and one Jod before Christmas, which a friend ended up getting. The kids flew off the shelves! I don't evne really collect Black Series, but even I would consider getting them (and DEFINITELY SM-33, which I don't think they made). Brutus was on the top of many best of 2024 lists for Black Series. Honestly, they needed MORE merch out there.

yes when it came out I was a teen and def it would not have been on my list...around that time I remember going to see Purple Rain... which was the last movie I saw in the theater for awhile back then. (this would not surprise Polymer LOL) but I went on a personal boycott of our local theater. We had a beautiful historic motif theater... one of the last in America... the walls were built like you were in the outdoors in a backyard with dark houses and fences in silhouettes... the ceiling was blue with star lights like the sky and there was even a cloud machine that would roll clouds across the sky. They tore it down inside and put in a (bad) multiplex of smaller theaters into the pretty large space. I did not go back until it changed hands a few times. Can't imagine of course trying to run a movie theater with one movie, but it was a shame to lose that theater....to such a janky reno.... even today you can hear the other movies next door

They did the same to a theater near me, though it wasn't a fancy movie house. It was a little cinema with 4 screens. At some point they cut each theater in half to make 8 screens - they were so small (they weren't exactly big to beign with, but decent). That theater ended up off the list. It's too bad because it was the closest to my house. It is actually still open, and they added to 12 (with an expansion at least, but all theaters are small).

It is funny what can be missed growing up, and back in those days, if you missed, you were likely outta luck. DH never saw ET back then, finally watched as an adult and didn't really care for it. I missed Raiders the first year it came out, but did get to see it on re-release the next year. Somehow I never watched any Star Trek, like Wrath of Khan, Neverending story, or Dark Crystal, not into Willy Wonka, etc.

TV was especially like that - if you missed it, you missed it! Maybe that episode would get a summer re-run, but otherwise, it was gone. I actually first saw Star Wars when it aired on TV. That was the only way I was ever gonna see it, and it was a BIG deal at school that day and the day after - we all watched it! Even once we got a VCR, the movies weren't available to own until much later. It was an event to see those big movies on TV.

You’re not alone! I’m from that generation and haven’t seen Goonies either lol

(It’s a running joke in my household since I’ve also never seen others like Indiana Jones, Top Gun, etc )

I haven't seen The Goonies, either. It came out before I was born. My sister and I have watched one episode and found the kids kind of annoying.

Well, that's that.

Interesting to be sure - maybe a little rushed. It felt like there should at least be a coda. I'm pretty happy with it overall, though I was worried that it would all just boil down to call the X-Wings and the big, bad, New Republic, adults would come save the day. Well, that's what happened, but the kids all got to do more at least, especially Neel - work that turbolaser! I wasn't necessarily crazy about the parents having a role, especially Wim's dad. It's like, I don't want him to come with them. The number rule with children's fiction like this is that the parents must be useless - Just ask R.L. Stine. Still, the kids got to do it and take charge, so it worked out okay. I would have sidelined them all though, personally.

I am glad that SM-33 made it - he had to! That was a great moment, with KB holding his head up. Jude Law was just excellent - showing the complexity of Jod. I wouldn't call him conflicted per se, but he just can't understand why they won't just let him take the money and run and nobody gets hurt. I gotta wonder, who was his Jedi Master? I did love the Supervisor - Oh, but Grand Chancellor Palpatine said the Jedi were traitors, you know? Oh crap! 🤣 Little flaw in the plan, eh, Jod? Fern was tough as nails and I love it. She didn't flinch with a lightsaber to her throat. The kids all rule really!

I know I said that it didn't necessarily need another season, but I would definitely watch more. They need to start filming NOW though, because I don't want it to be like Stranger Things where the "kids" are all like 30! 😉 They did this right though - one season with a full narrative and total closure, while leaving a few possibilities open. Yes, I'd love to see them, but I won't feel ripped off If I don't. That's how you do it.

That right there? That was peak Star Wars.

Loved it!!
Love the classic each kid gets to contribute something to saving the day, and often in the 80s movies, the adults are there at the end, ET, Goonies, etc. I liked that the adults did what they did because of the kids' faith and conviction, and love and trust for them. Jod was so incredibly well done. Quite satisfied with that little bit of back story. Just enough to give us an idea of what happened. We don't need all the details. I do wonder though....what might be on this new horizon. They could totally do a season 2. What a wonderful series!!

I hope this show finds an audience with people who want to binge it. It's perfect for that as this was always planned to be a movie.

oh my gosh yes! if you missed an episode of something, you better hope for summer reruns. Miniseries were a huge deal. I remember how excited my mom was for Shogun. And then stuff that they showed every year, like Ten Commandments, Roots, Gone/Wind etc. Being the big old nerd that I am, I used to cut out any and all mentions of Star Wars stuff from the TV Guides.....mostly starting in the 80s, ROTJ time period. I still have my clippings around here somewhere......they're fun to look at. I have the MASH finale pages too. boy that was a big deal in our house, We all loved MASH.
I get such a kick out of these millennial vloggers, who I really do appreciate, enjoying the Star Wars Holiday special.....they have NO idea what it was like to hear about a Star Wars special coming on TV, when there was NOTHING else Star Wars to watch....and getting that.....and then having to wait for ESB

I do think I"ll try and pick up some Black Series. DH saw some in the stores. I collect those. I got Jod for Christmas. We'll see.....Still waiting on my Sranger figure from the Acolyte which I dont' thing will ever be.....

but anyway, back to Skeleton Crew. Can't wait to read/watch more about it tomorrow
