General Star Wars Discussion

It was inspired by Solo, but it takes place during the ST era because you’re getting coaxium for the Resistance. The story doesn’t really matter, though - all anyone cares about is flying the Falcon. 🤣

Oh, we were getting the coaxium for the Resistance? I don't think that ever registered with me LOL. 😂

Yeah, I hope they just lean into having every era represented and not caring about a timeline anymore. Like in Avengers campus.

It does take place in that era, but with Hondo it always struck me as more of a Clone Wars/Rebels inspired thing.

Yep, this is the way.

I said from the beginning that galaxies edge needed to represent all eras of SW. Instead Disney stupidly chose ST only. It was a stupid move they are now doing what they should have all along and made it more for all of SW.

It was a mistake one of many since Disney had been in charge of SW.
Disney made two absolutely gigantic mistakes with Galaxy's Edge. The first was setting it in a new/unfamiliar place (this would have been slightly mitigated if they had characters from all the trilogies walking around, maybe just not at the same time). The second was setting it during the sequel trilogy and having only sequel trilogy characters walking around. They can't really fix the first mistake. They are now realizing it is possible to fix the second mistake and that only super fans passionately care about the timeline. More casual fans are thrilled to meet the characters they know and love (most of which are not from the sequel trilogy).
The story doesn’t really matter, though - all anyone cares about is flying the Falcon.
This is 10000% accurate. When I visited Galaxy's Edge, the absolute highlight was Smuggler's Run. I totally geeked out just walking through the portion of the line that was inside Falcon, especially the tables with the game board. If it had just been a walk through attraction, I would have been completely satisfied. My childhood Star Wars fantasy was to cruise around the galaxy with Han and Chewie so getting to be inside the iconic cockpit was an absolute dream come true.

I'm always astonished when people complain about Galaxy's Edge. The imagineers didn't want to just give you Star Wars sets to walk through. They wanted it to be immersive, and they wanted it to be YOUR Star Wars story. They found a way to make so many dreams come true--to drink on a cantina on another planet, fly the Falcon, make your own droid that really works, secretly assemble a lightsaber with the Resistance, even buy a pet Loth Cat that purrs when you pet it! How can anyone experience all this and think, "This sucks. Why is there no one dressed up as Luke?" It boggles the mind!

Because it could have been so much more. GE was Disney’s answer to Harry Potter at Universal, and it pales in comparison.

Meh... you will never please the gate keepers. It is their mission in life to complain endlessly about how Star Wars sucks now. Certainly not the crowds of people who are there in Galaxy's Edge every second the park is open care that it is Batuu and not Endor or Tatooine. No matter what setting or timeline they chose folks would complain online. Rise is one of the best rides/experiences that WDW has IMHO.

My only complaint is that Oga's does not have more comfy seating...

I disagree that setting it in a “new” place was a mistake, because Star Wars has so many iconic locations it would be impossible to choose which one(s) to use in a theme park. It’s not like Harry Potter where the bulk of the story takes place in Hogsmeade and Hogwarts. They made a new planet that is very reminiscent of what we’ve seen in the movies and also fits really well with the Mando universe.

But sticking to the timeline no longer makes sense when they aren’t making any new content in that era. Everything now onscreen is during the New Republic era. So just do whatever in Batuu. It’ll be fine. :D

It just should have been all eras of Star Wars from the start. It was originally planned to be and later changed to try and capitalize on only the Disney ST garbage.

It was a tactical error, one of many involving SW under Disney.

I do generally agree with you, however I still dislike the trend toward these "super immersive" them epark lands. I blame the "it's all real" trend on Universal and Harry Potter, where the idea was to put you IN the story. To me, there is nothing wrong with a theme park land being just that, and if I had designed SWGE, there would be Star Wars music playing and an X-Wing spinner ride int he center! You would know that they are rides.

That being said, SWGE is still in face very awesome! It was executed well per their intent, and I certianly have had and will continue to have tons of fun there regardless of which characters are walking around. I still really enjoy it. I welcome the changes too, but that doesn't mean I felt there was a "problem" previously. It's clearly been pretty successful.

Sorta like the hotel huh?

I would say it was in fact very different from the hotel. SWGE has remaind popular and busy, with Rise of the Resistance commanding very long wait times. The hotel had issues, number one being the price-point, which limited the potential customer base, especially those interested in a "super immersive" role play experience. The issue with the hotel however was NOT very specific storyline choices, and it would have faded regardless of whether they had set it in a different era. Most people who did actually do it, said that it was a great expereience.

The immersion of Galaxy's Edge is totally the selling point for me. Where else can I go and experience what it would be like to visit another inhabited planet? I love all the ambient sounds, I love that blue and green milk taste like nothing recognizable, I love that it's aurebesh everywhere you turn. I think what we got is so cool because the imagineers put so much effort into transcending our expectations.

Of course their first thought was "what if we re-created one of the planets from Star Wars?" (you can read about the whole creative process in The Art of Galaxy's Edge), but they found that limiting and wanted to really blow us away with the most astonishing Star Wars experiences they could create. I respect that artistic process, I love the result, and I'm so grateful that they made this amazing place for us.

I'll be honest, I haven't been to the Wizarding World yet, but I don't think I could possibly love it more than Galaxy's Edge. I can walk down British streets with Medieval architecture, eat British food, etc. in the "real world." I can't visit Batuu anywhere else!

I'm with you, @Gabby01! The theming of GE is fantastic. I don't care that it's a planet I had never heard of before it was created at Disneyland. (I haven't read any of the SW books or comics.) It feels to me like an alien planet in the SW universe, and that's all that matters. And I've been happy with the characters I've encountered, including Kylo, Stormtroopers, Rey, Chewie, Vi, and R2D2. I don't need Luke, Leia, and Han to enjoy GE.

I had some friends over for dinner the other night and showed them my GE Coke, Sprite, and Dasani bottles, so I was explaining Aurebesh to them. :-) Another friend was just at DL and we were discussing the dianoga in the water fountain. So fun!

I will say, that while I am personally not as into that "super immersive" style, it is clearly what is popular. Universal is trippling down on that, and while I might prefer it a little lighter, I totally get why they do it that way. I still enjoy it too, I just feel that the "put on" is a bit much. I mena, sometimes I jsut want to find the restrooms and not "the refresher," you know? 🤣 Still though, there is no debate that it is popular how they made it. I do just hope that not everything in the theme park space has to go that way.

Not sure if anyone saw this, but Mara Jade was the newest Legacy lightsaber released yesterday. She’s my favorite, so I couldn’t resist.

I thought KK de-canonized the EU. So now that they realize the Disney characters stink, the EU is ok now it seems?

went back to look and I think it is already sold out. So good nab.
It’s on backorder online. I’m local so I went at rope drop and got it at Tatooine Traders. No idea what the supplies were like, but they had a bunch behind the register!
