If you have only carry on luggage (nothing to check) do you still have to go to the counter, or can your proceed directly to the gate?

I guess you would have to have your boarding passes (maybe printed online if using SWA?)

Most airlines now offer online check in 24 hour in advance of your departure time.

If you have your boarding passes, you can go right to security and then to your gate.

If you do not check in online, many airlines and airports offer kiosks where you can check in without having to wait in a long line. Then you can go right to secrity and the gate.

You can't go directly to the gate. Any of the suggestions above will work fine, but you will not be permitted through Security unless each passenger has a boarding pass.
