Geez LOUISE!

I was such a purse snob! But now I have 4 or 5 Dooney bags that are out of style. Who would have thought. They used to be a classic style and now they seem to cater to the younger crowds. Like Tommy Hilfiger, DH always wore Tommy clothes because they were nice quality and classic....then they became the "in" thing for the younger kids and the quality went down IMO. He has a closet full of sweaters with the small insignia not the giant Tommy written across the front, he just can't bring himself to wear them anymore.

get her a purse from www.littlearth.com ! She will be the one to start a fad ;) I get sooooo many compliments on my purses! and you can get 15% off of the spring line right now! :sunny:

At last somebody who has her priorities straight!

Clearly this is a discussion among rich people with lots of $$ to burn.

Just because someone buys an expensive purse doesn't mean they do not have their "priorities straight". I simply have different priorities than those who choose to spend their money elsewhere. I've spent less than $100 on purses over the last 21 years. I've bought 4 or 5 of the same plain black leather purses at a military clothing store because it was what met the requirements to carry with my uniforms and it was cheap. It was too much of a hassle to switch from my "work" purse to a "civilian" purse on a daily or weekly basis, so I never bought any other purses of any other colors. Once I retired, I wanted COLOR "everything" from walls (spent a LOT of time overseas in military housing with white walls) to purses to an umbrella (always had to have solid dark blue or black umbrellas). I saw a picture in a magazine for a Coach "studded" soho bag in a pretty shade of turquoise-ish blue and the studs are rivets and rhinestones. It is a BEAUTIFUL bag! I did end up buying 4 purses and 2 wallets - all of which were retirement gifts to me from me! I've earned $2600 worth of nice purses after 20 years of military life. :goodvibes My priorities are ALL IN THE RIGHT PLACES and I'm not rich by a long shot! We work hard (well, I did work hard before I retired) and save our money and we do not live above our means. I do believe in buying the best quality I can afford on items that I know I will use for years to come. I know a $500 purse isn't for everybody - but, where I splurge - others may save and vise-versa. :thumbsup2 By the way, I do still have the same, old solid black umbrella that I've owned for at least the last 10yrs. It has traveled all over the world with me and I'm kinda sentimental about it now. I also can't seem to throw it away while it is still good. Some day, I'm going to splurge on a Mickey umbrella :woohoo:

I think this convo went really off topic ...To the OP i would get ur daughter a bag but if i was u i would stay away from the LVs because they are bootlegged left and right and it just wouldnt feel special....Coach bags are cool (But they are the in thing atm and might get played out soon) I like DB i also seen some nice michael kohrs bags, and chloe bags are very nice ...And to everyone else...Every1 spends their money differently...I have this arguement with my mother all the time she thinks driving a mercedes and living in a 1.5 mil house decked to the nines with expensive persion rugs and stuff like that are important...And i rather live in a nice house but nothing crazy and drive a honda accord and have my designer bags and my once a year trips to disney world...So dont judge everyone is different and it doesnt mean that they dont have their priorities in order.

Oh please... aren't you the one who stirred up trouble on a weight/body image thread on the Community Board?

Oh well, I wouldn't buy a pricey purse for my teen because not only does her taste change and she is very fickle, but I worry about whether she would lose it or if someone would steal it from her.

I buy investment pieces. It's not about $$$ or brand name, it's about quality with me. Nothing wrong with that. I'd rather buy a quality purse that lasts 10 to 15 years rather than one of lower quality every year which costs more $$$ in the long run.... :confused3

wont happen in this house. dd would have to save her money if a purse was worth that much to her. I did get a brighton purse for my anniversary that dh spend around $100 on and I thought that was too much!

How funny! All of my bills get paid every month. I outright own 2 2006 vehicles, no debt --- we did just buy a second home and that has a mortgage ..... for now.... Our children have college funds.... we have retirement funds.....

So, I think my priorities are plenty straight. I do love a nice purse though. :) And I have bought a D & B for my 14dd.... SO, what? I have a teenage dd that really asks for nothing -- she didn't ask for the purse but, I knew she had been looking at it.... so, I bought it for her!

Obviously you are one of the ones I referred to who has money to burn, so it really doesn't matter what you burn it on.

My comment is referring to the general population. I worked in banking for 12 years reviewing loan files, so trust that I know what I'm talking about. MOST of the people you see with expensive houses, vacations, and lots of name brnad/designer merchandise don't really have the money to be spending it. The average american today has a home mortgage, 1-2 car loans, and $9k in credit card debt. They have very little (if any) money in the bank and no retirement savings other than what is provided by their employers. Many of these people are the ones you see walking around with $500+ handbags, etc.

Obviously if you have the money to burn, it's no big deal to spend it how you want to, but most people are buying with money they don't have and then it's ME who has to pay for it in the end (bankruptcies and charge-offs lead to higher prices/rates to the general population). Those are the facts...

I also feel that money or no money, giving an 8th grader an expensive purse like that is just teaching the kid to grow up to be a label-conscious overspender.

no one needs to justify what or how they spend their money - if you are not an expensive purse buyer than don't worry about it!

QVC just emailed me the Dooney specials!! I just bought 3 within the past year and I think I need to move on to Coach this year!

Please, let's not allow this thread to deteriorate into one with nasty comments being thrown around. The OP commented on the current prices of a line of purses. She did not ask that people pass judgements on how people spend money. If she, or others, have the money to "burn," then more power to them. If they don't have the money to "burn" then they have to live with the consequences of their spending. But it is a far cry from commenting on a line's prices to ending up in bankrupcy court.

And just because someone posts a thread does not automatically open them up to being publically passed judgement upon. As most of us learned when we were growing up ... "If you can't say something nice..."

Thank you.

So true...I'm so old, I remember when Abercrombie & Fitch was a quality brand :confused3

Molly 2004: thanks for the information about Coach, I'm going to email them and see if I can have them work on my briefcase. They may charge me for the corner that was chewed years ago by my late mini dachshund, but that's OK.

Dooney and Bourke has several outlet stores including one at the Premium Outlet Mall just outside of WDW. The prices are much cheaper there then in your regular department store. You can do a search for other D&B outlet stoes at www.outletbound.com If you have a QVC outlet near you they are having a special D&B sale this weekend. All their D&B handbags are an additional 40% off. Several times a year the QVC outlets have a special $99 D&B sale. All their D&B bags are $99 no matter what they are marked. I was able to get a carry-on bag that was originally $295 for $99.

Can anyone tell me where the list of these QVC outlets can be found ??

TIA.

Ok, the only purses that carry these days is my pickle bag! It's a VivPickle bag. Go to www.vivpickle.com, she is an up and coming bag designer. Most bags cost between $40 - $60. You design everything yourself, you pick the material, the length of the straps and everything. It is very chic and happening. I love my wild looking bags that scream my personality because I am a very conservative/preppy dresser, so I really express myself through my purses. She has stores in Philly and NYC and you can read all about it on her web site. Being a teenager and having a first would be pretty cool!

It it were me, I would probably get my DD a nice Dooney or Coach bag. Something simple and classic - they last a lifetime and never go out of style. I've treated myself to several nice bags from D&B and Coach, but I do buy them on sale or at the outlet stores. To some, yes it's a lot to spend on a bag, but I think my priorities are in check. I am rather frugal otherwise and we don't have any bills and have a decent savings account. I don't get my hair done often, get manicures or pedicures, or anything like that - I would rather spend it on an occasional new purse!!
