Geeks go for broke! Updated 2/17: Wrap-up

Well, you know.....that's what you get for still living in Canada. BTW, Mat seems to think that if he goes to class on Saturday morning, we will wait for him to return before we head to the port. I told him he is free to drive out there whenever he wants, but WE will be leaving at 9 sharp.

Of course, you are free to be in whatever car you like, schmoopy girl ;)

Um he can meet us on the boat. :lmao: Just because he's taking his courses seriously doesn't mean they have to infringe on MY cruise time! And i can say that..because he doesn't read anything! :)

We *are* good, aren't we???:goodvibes

(I work for the USPS...if you couldn't tell)

Of course for *some* reason DCL uses those BROWN guys. :confused3

Actually though there is a lot of talk
of dropping back to a 5 day delivery week. With gas what it costs.....every time it raises one penny the USPS loses another 7 million dollars.

Another USPS employee here!

Erica,

I just finished reading geeks on a budget (already read your other two). I really enjoyed it. You are a great writer. I am heading out on the Oct DD, so I will be anxiously awaiting your TR for this cruise. I am so anxious to find out what dry dock changes where made on the ship...

Any chance we could get you to update live on the ship? In between drinks and massages of course... would not want to get in the way of those very important cruise fundamentals. ;)

Jus sayin'

Another USPS employee here!

Really??

Awesome!:goodvibes

Ya know I was talking to people at work the other day and I realized that it seems there is a higher proportion of Disney lovers in the USPS than in the general population. I wonder why that is. I really wish I could get a grant to do a study on it....I volunteer to do the research myself!

Looking forward to meeting you, Danielle!

Oh Sorry to hijack, Erica. Great signs, BTW. I see you did what I was going to suggest, downloading the photoshop free trial. That's what I did...I became pretty good at Elements when I tried that, but I'm finding CS3 a bit harder. I've made a couple of signs but there is one I am hung up on. Nothing like crash-course-hands-on-learning in 28 days or less!!!!

28 DAYS! 28 DAYS!!!

Erica.....very nice signs!!

We were very lucky, nothing was taken from our door, or our fish extender. Max always ran down the hall to the room to see what was left there...very cute....so we will say a little prayer that your's stays put!!!

I started reading your pre-trippie. LOVED it! So, I had to go and read Geeks on a Boat and Geeks on a Budget. Like a good book, I couldn't put it down. (Or pry myself away from the computer, as the case may be.) I am saving your original trip report for another time when I can sit down with uniterrupted time and a coffee (too bad it can't be the famed mochachino). Going on our first DCL cruise next month. Hope you have your report posted before we go...it will definitely add to the excitement. Thanks for sharing.

That's my girl ;) I mean, we'll be in the hot tub and on our third drink by the time he arrives! I think we need to just convince him to skip class, though. Hello, priorities???

Thanks so much for the compliment! Ah, looks like we will be warming up Cozumel and (maybe) Grand Cayman for you, eh? Are you guys heading to Costa Maya, or did you get diverted as well? I wonder when they will be ready to open back up.....

As for a live update, I'd say the chances are slim. I try not to drink and type ;) It gets ugly.

Good, that makes me feel a little better. I'm hoping there will be enough folks who respect the FE (respect the FE! that's my new catch phrase.....) - my only concern is we are fairly close to the main elevators. With luck, it will all be fine!

Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment! I'm not the swiftest updater, but I should have a good deal of it posted by the time you head out on your first cruise! Ah, memories of my first mochaccino.....you have to have one for me :thumbsup2

I'll be doing an update this week sometime. It's been a bit of a busy weekend with surprisingly little progress in my cruise prep. I'd blame it on my hangover, but I have ginger chews in the house so I have no excuse :upsidedow More soon.

Yes, you are breaking them in for us.... Thanks for that BTW.

No, we are going to Grand Cayman (and I am not happy about it ~ I loved Costa Maya when I went on the DD in Dec 06... not over commercialized, gorgeous...) errr.... "not happy" is not the right way to put that... I am happy to be going and realized how lucky I am... its just not what I signed up for... does that make sense?

Drinking and typing... ugly says you, amusing says me! :lmao:

Maybe this elusive fairy that I have been reading about will give you the tag line.....respect the FE :lmao:

I was wondering about something so I checked into it. Sarah, you're just going to have to wait for Mat to get there. Per DCL, all guests staying in the same room must arrive before any of them can board.

I would LOVE that! I don't know, I've ducked the elusive fairy for years. Don't know if I want to break the streak! :rolleyes1

It's official then: he is missing class that day. At least, if he knows what is good for him.

oh no no no... THIS woman waits for NO MAN!

the ONLYway i would wait would be if DCL served drinks in the waiting area to board now thats a idea a nice bar by the ship model would be perfect

No, I don't have anything major to report. Yes, DCL called me last night. Yes, I was very thrilled for about 30 seconds at the prospect of an upgrade. Why else would they call? There I was, dreaming about a category 5 or even better, a suite, because DON'T THEY KNOW WHO I AM???? And then the nice DCL employee burst my little big-imagination bubble by confirming my REAS reservations.

"Oh. Thanks."

As I hung up the phone, deflated and crushed, I added under my breath "for nothing!!!"

In the last week, I have gotten my bonine (just in case.....plus, the stuff I bought two years ago had expired), purchased a few extra items for the travel toiletry bag, and bought a small size hand sanitizing foam.

Lionel: what's that for?
Me: Mexico.
Lionel: why? because you think it's a dirty dirty place?
Me: no.....but just to be on the safe side.....
Lionel: ................
Me: we didn't get shots!
Lionel: :sad2:

Husbands just don't get the whole "better safe than sorry" thing. Anyhow, if it were up to him all we would pack would be three outfits and maybe a pair of underwear. For a 7-day trip. TO MEXICO. Men.

I did manage to cross another item off the to-do list, and that was taking my dress up for alterations. I opted to have it dry cleaned as well, just in case. It IS from ebay. It will be ready for pickup later this week. Lionel's jacket, it turns out, fits him perfectly now! I guess two months of chest presses go a long way in filling out a sport coat. Hubba, hubba.

Last week, I nearly wore myself stressing out over - are you ready for this? Are you sure? Really sure?

80's t-shirts.

Yes, dear readers, I fell victim to the "I need something else" sickness, and when a few of my fellow DISers started looking for shorts for our mock 80's night, I tried to find some too. And then I tried finding a pirate shirt for Lionel. And then I discovered that not only are there no pirate shirts to be had in the greater Orlando area, but there are no 80's shirts that are not (a) kind of ridiculous or (b) less than $20. So, I took a little step back and reminded myself that this is exactly why I didn't get caught up in all of the logo merchandise phenomena of about a year ago. I made a magnet. That was enough for us. I guess we're just not T-shirt people, I don't know.

So yes, fellow Double Dippers, I am going to be a big old party pooper and attend 80's night in my regular clothing. Trust me, it's better this way. I might get cranky otherwise, and nobody wants that. Sarah can attest.

I did manage to make myself a list of things to do in the next 13 days, of which I will be working 11. Cripes. Anyhow, this is less for you and more for me, but here is the breakdown:

This week:
  • pick up dress from cleaners
  • wash my Crocs flip flops and sandals (someone suggested throwing them in with the towels, which I will try)
  • print up FE cabin list and cruise plans spreadsheet (thanks nenner1!)
  • get an appropriate sized Rubbermaid container for FE and SM stuff (to be used for packing any fragile purchases....like rum)
  • finish 6/8 of my remaining writing projects
  • call DCL to add our saved money to our OBC, and fill out our payment authorization forms online

Next week:
  • haircuts for me and L
  • pedicure (if I must, sometimes cruise prep can be very tough)
  • finish last 2/8 articles
  • send invoice for project with note stating I will be out of town for a week
  • print and sign cruise forms
  • pre-cruise laundry
  • segregate cruise clothing (yes, even in this open minded world)
  • PACK!!!!!!!
  • say hello to Sarah when she arrives late late LATE Friday evening, and promptly fall asleep

That is my plan. Oh, crap. I still need ginger chews. Must remember to stop at Asian market on the way to meet Mat and his BFF at the bookstore this evening. You know, only Sarah will laugh at that. But I'm still leaving it in there. Ooooh, you know what else they sell at the Asian market? Pocky. Delicious, crunchy, chocolatey Pocky. And some pretty awesome teas. And sake. Oh dear. Maybe I should just order the ginger chews online......

This paragraph is why I LOVE your writing style, I feel like you are literally talking to me in person, its so great!

I too was stressing over the 80's attire... I found a T shirt that will do double duty, once for the cruise and I can wear it again in Nov... Dh is trying to come up with something but so far nada, so he will be in normal clothes also, dont sweat it, it's all good!

I just had to drop by and say I just got off my four day wonder cruise and your previous trip reports were a great deal of help for my first cruise! I never did make it over to the cove cafe for a moccachino. :sad2: I did muster not worrying about a giant mutant shark coming to gobble me up while I was snorkeling. :lmao: Unfortunately Tiffany did to good a job on my FE and someone stole it the last night of our cruise. :sad1: Also, thanks to you I knew to get ginger chews and knew where to find the best alcohol! If hadn't read your trip reports I would have never known about the passporter that I read, reread, and tabbed at nauseam.:) Thanks for your wonderful trip reports! I'm glad you have no storms to worry about and wish you lots of pixie dust and smooth sailing!:goodvibes

Erica... I did 3 ports in Mexico and all I got was a cold... :rotfl2: (actually it was the Cabo Crud we started coming down with after 11 days on board...)

Relax... drink everything out of cans or with alcohol in it and you'll be fine!!! :goodvibes

Oh and pack nyquil... they didn't have that on board... Dayquil yes, but it came to rationing out what we all had to get to LA...

So I finally have my cruise documents. Which is a pleasant surprise given my last few experiences. But that's not to say that this one wasn't a minor adventure as well.

Mat called me to let me know that fedex had called him. In Florida. To tell him that they'd tried delivering said documents to my house...twice. And that if i didn't pick them up by the following wednesday, they would be destroyed. Not returned. Destroyed. And they didn't provide him with a tracking number, but advised that there would be one when i got home on those little door things.

I called fedex from work, rather than waiting till i got home to get the tracking number so that i could make arrangements for them to deliver to work the following day. Waited on hold for 15 mins only to be told the woman couldn't find anything in the system and that i needed my tracking number. upon hearing that there was a message left on my bf's phone...in florida, with no tracking number, she assured me there would be a notice when i got home. She didn't think it was odd that they'd called Mat...in Florida about a package being delivered to my place.

I got home. No door tag. Finally managed to get fedex to find me in their system and make arrangements for the documents to be delivered to my work. No one could explain why Mat was called instead of me! :confused3

But i have them..and life is good.
