Gave my neighbor the "good side" of my fence...

In my neighborhood, the sides alternate if they are not facing the street. I personally don't think there is a good or bad side. I know the having the rails help if you have to jump the fence (being chased by the police or a monster). So I like them best.

We installed a fence down one side after our neighbors dog stuck his head over the 4ft chain link and bit a child in our backyard. We installed it inside the chainlink (due to concerns with dog biting while fence was being installed, installers were glad for the little buffer) and with smooth side facing us. However we also have a privacy fence gate so from the road you can't really tell unless you are in neighbors yard.

Our township rule does require nice side out but we figured neighbor wouldn't call to complain after dog bite and since it isn't obvious from the road until next to their house we've had no problems. Best investment yet...although a clear red flag there is a problem with that neighbor if we go to sell! :crazy2:

I would put the smooth side facing the neighbors because to me that is the outside of the fence.

I think most privacy fences are ugly so whatever side was toward my yard wouldn't make much difference.

Get a "good neighbor" fence. Looks the same on both sides. Many styles of vinyl fencing are constructed this way. Even some wood fences are too, but they're more expensive.

Otherwise, yes, giving the neighbors the good side is sometimes required and is always proper etiquette.

Good neighbor fences are the norm here, and don't cost a penny more. You just alternate the smooth side with the other side. This is what I consider a Good Neighbor fence looks like. Same on both sides.

To me, that fence looks very weird. I would be upset if my neighbor installed something that looked like that.
It is what just about every subdivision has here. Of course I realize there are vastly different norms across the country on fencing. A womanl I went to college with just bought a new house in Venetia, Pennsylvania and the HOA forbids fencing of any kind. The HOA cuts the front and back lawns and fencing would slow down the mowing of the backyards. She can't let her dogs out to do their business, she has to take them out on a leash.

We share fences here so on the neighbor sides one panel faces in, the next faces out, and they alternate. The back fence with no neighbor all the panels face smooth side out.

I think that fence might not have been installed correctly. The entire fence should match. A good neighbor fence is what we have on the sides of our house. It is the exact same on both sides and looks like this:

No, that popsicle fence is standard where I live. It is correct. That lattice stuff that you have is not allowed by the HOA where I live.

Go to Google. Click on Images. Search "Good Neighbor Fence". Most are like what I posted

The good side goes towards the neighbor as far as I've known.

PVC fences have alleviated that problem both sides are the good sides!

Yes, this is what I was referring to when I mentioned a good neighbor fence. Available in vinyl too. Looks the same on both sides.

(My father's family business is fencing. It started out as hand forged wrought iron fencing by my grandfather back in the 1910's, then chain link, wood, vinyl, and other types. Anybody care to discuss the merits of malleable iron vs. pressed steel gate hinges?)
