Gators in Bay Lake

During our recent stay at POR they removed an alligator from the river. I was looking out of the window of the bus on the way to AK one morning and I saw a small one in a body of water on the way.

During our stay we also saw a snake on the pathway close to our car, and more surprising than that, I saw a bobcat by the laundry room one morning.:scared1: That freaked me out a little.

We were riding the boat from DTD to OKW. We were in the canal leading to OKW and walking down the path was a bob cat like he/she owned it.

Gators are not the only critter in the waters you need to be worried about! There is an especially mean micro critter called an amoeba that is one bad boy!!! Stay out Of the shallows where they breed!!!!:scared1:

I remember a trip years back when we did a boat ride at Myakka River state park in FL - I remember the guide saying that during the day it wasn't an issue, but after dusk there are only 2 things in the water: Alligators, and Alligator food". Words to live by in Florida, I guess!

I lived in Sarasota in 1972/1973. A young lady (16 years old) was swimming at the beach inside the alligator proof nets and a 10 foot gator attacked her in front of family who was having a family picnic. They found her remains 2 days later in the gators nest. A horrible tragedy, to say the least, about 10 years later there was an article about how the State of Florida was fighting the family in court and how the family had numerous medical bills from hospitalization into physchiatric facilities of the parents who ended up divorcing.

People who reside in the Southeast and especially Florida know about the dangers and risks with these creatures. Disney made a huge mistake ignoring them and not educating/informing guests that they exist on property. They don't want to take away the utopian image that they try to reflect. There are yellow road signs from TTC area to Ft Wilderness warning drivers of deer crossings. Why? Because it is a direct hazard. The same warning should have occured.

We stayed at Wilderness Lodge 2 years ago and I remember standing on the beach watching the electrical water pageant. We were close to the water like so many other families. Makes me wonder how many were in the water watching. A previous poster mentioned seeing on at the bridge at Splash Mountain. I have seen several there with people dropping turkey leg scraps. No one from Disney told the people to stop........

Dang near needed to carbon date the thing! I think it was started by King Tut!

You know how, when you buy a red car, all of a sudden you notice every single red car on the road?

The alligators have always been there. But we're all a lot more attuned to that now.

OK, and yes, I've just noticed how old this particular thread is. But lots and lots of talk on the boards about an issue that has always existed.

Thread more pertinent now than ever though! Maybe these constant warnings/dangers will get people's attention and possibly save some lives!

Several years ago (in Smoky Mtns.), we saw a bear swat the seat of a little boy's pants right off him. He jumped out of a parked car when they saw a bear, and ran right up to her. She had cubs up a tree and lunged at the boy and swatted. She sure taught him something that his parents weren't teaching!!! Fortunately, she only shredded his pants!! Taught his stupid, clueless parents something too, I expect!

Hopefully, all these more stringent gator warning signs will help clue the clueless.

I can live with the gators, at least they are useful for meat, belts, briefcases, boots, etc.

Lawyers, well...

You hope!!

Really.

If all we did was resurrect old threads, we'd have very few related to:

1. Rental Trailers
2. Rental golf carts (on- and off-site)
3. Pet discussions (would probably get locked)
4. What is the best loop...?
5. How come no availability on a short notice trip at Halloween/other busy time?
6. Pre-planning and on-going Trip Report.

...I'm sure there would be a few more.

If an old thread is relevant (say older than 2 years), start a new thread and link it in in the OP; but like Trip Advisor after a certain length of time some old threads should auto-lock.

That's my opinion. Worth what you paid for it (zero).

PS - I like chocolate chip cookies. :offtopic:

I agree, gators aren't much to worry about unless they get a tad bit hungry.
Not a nice picture :(. ..yeah, I live here in FL and know it's a fact of life ..

Please remember this is from 2011. Times have changed.
