Gatlinburg-- Just got back

I love to get a dessert from the Bakery near the entrance of the park and take it with me into a show. I've had great cheesecake there in the past. The Dreamland Drive In Show is cute.

Everyone loves the cinnamon bread from the mill. I could take it or leave it.

We have eaten at Miss Lillian's but it's been a long time. We often eat at Aunt Granny's buffet when we're with a group so everyone can get whatever they want. They used to have a character meal there with different characters (Strawberry Shortcake & others) during the summer kids fest, but I'm not sure if they do that now. Santa makes his rounds there at Christmas.

My kids like to eat at Red's Diner which is just burgers and hot dogs but they have a good toppings bar.

My DH likes Granny Ogle's Ham and Beans which is up the hill past Miss Lillian's.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one yet.... One of my favorite restaurants is "The Best Italian Restaurant". It has amazing food. After the first time, we started sharing dishes because the portion sizes were HUGE. The price is mediocre. There is a patio next to a stream that offers peaceful dining. Local people run it & they are all friendly. It's a must visit each trip.

The location is hard to describe, it is in Gatlinburg. We park @ the lot behind Calhouns & it's in the next block up, same side of the road. Try it, you won't be disappointed :-)

For those following or planning a trip to this area... We just got back. We didn't exactly follow our "plans" and played it by ear. We had a lot of good food, a lot of fun, and stayed within our (generous) budget.

I'm updating out blog now and hope to have it finished by tonight. (My DH always writes it while we're traveling, but I edit it, and provide more details and pictures when we get back.)

A brief synopsis for those who don't want to read the whole detailed blog...
One day at Dollywood was enough even for this theme park loving family. We took advantage of going at 3pm and returning the next day for free. We arrived a bit before 3pm and they didn't make us wait to get in for the record.

We ate at The Old Mill twice (a favorite from last time and it's definitely still a favorite. Be prepared to wait but you can wander the shops while you wait and hear them call you on the intercom or just go back at your estimated time. Corn fritters with maple butter, corn chowder, salad, and choice of dessert accompany all the adult meals. I expected the dessert to be so-so, but it was very good. My favorite is the pecan pie! The blackberry cobbler topped with their homemade vanilla ice cream was excellent too. The kids enjoyed the chocolate cake. Even though it says kids meals come with ice cream, the servers let them pick other desserts at no extra charge. One server brought them full size versions, the second server cut the cake pieces in half (fine with me!)

We ate one breakfast at Applewood at The Apple Barn in Sevierville and one dinner there too. There is on restaurant at each side of the complex. As far as I can tell they are the same. It was great for both and a bit pricier than The Old Mill. They serve apple fritters with apple butter and "Applewood Juleps" which is mixed fruit juice with both breakfast and dinner. Dessert is not included with the meal. We wandered down and picked up a fried apple pie (single serve...but big enough to share) from the cider bar to take home. They don't offer it in the restaurant and people say it is the best choice.

The best breakfast we had though was at Crockett's Breakfast Camp. I'm shocked no one recommended it! We just happened upon it our first morning. We stayed at a condo up off of Ski Mountain Road. Crockett's is in Gatlinburg on the far end of the main road (close to us.) We were too hungry to drive the half hour out to Sevierville to the Apple Barn that morning like we planned, so on a whim we stopped there. The atmosphere was awesome and the food was amazing too! Huge portions! Watch out if you order a skillet...it's served in a full size cast iron skillet along with an inch think pancake on the side! Even the kids meals were big and everything was delicious!

I'm not sure what big appeal is for the Log Cabin Pancake House :scared:. I took the advice and we ate there even though once we were in the area we remembered we had eaten at the once in PF last time and weren't impressed. This time we went to the one in Gatlinburg which does have better atmosphere. I had a blackberry belgian waffle and it really was delicious but there didn't appear to be anything special about anyone else order. It just seems like a typical family restaurant to me. :confused3 Apple Barn and Crockett's beat it by a mile in my opinion.

To get a break from Southern food, we ate lunch at No Way Jose's in Gatlinburg, There is one in PF now too. The food and service was good and it's such a pretty location. We ate there on the day we went to Ripley's Aquarium. Very convenient to take a break and return for more fun at the aquarium. We did get into the aquarium (and other Ripley attractions) for $7 each with our homeschool IDs. Excellent deal...thanks for the tip!

We went to the Hatfield and McCoy dinner show. It was just okay. It was cute and the food was pretty good. I think I would try Dixie Stampede instead based on others' recommendations.

We did the mirror maze at the MagiQuest in PF. It was expensive ($12 adult, $9 child) but my kids really love mirror mazes. You can go through as many times as you like for the one admission price. The had a deal where you could do an hour of MagiQuest along with free admission to the mirror maze and minigolf for $20. We didn't have time or we might have found better value in that. The mirror maze was good though.

We also did Hillbilly Golf in Gatlinburg. You ride a lift up the mountain and then golf down. That was the unique part that made us choose that place. The minigolf was about what you'd expect. I'd recommend it.

Someone at our resort's pool recommended Nascar Go Carts. For $20 you can do all the go carts and amusement rides you want all day. There are also coupons in all the books for $2 off (so really $18.) We didn't do any go-carts.

Feel free to ask any questions you have! I'm happy to do my part to help out now!

Glad your trip went well. For future refernce for OP or others...

The best pancake place I have eaten is on the strip in Gatlinburg. It is just called the Pancake House. Be forewarned, they ONLY take cash or check, but excellent food.

NASCAR Speedpark is indeed tons of fun. $19.99 ($17.99 w/ coupon) for alllll day until midnight. The only drawback is the height requirements. If you have little ones who are anxious to drive the go cart, check the height requirements first. They do have some little kid amusement park type rides like a mery-go-round, scrambler, little train, etc. They also have 2 mini golf courses. If you plan to go to the speedpark, I would recommend the refillable cup for like $7.95. You get free refills all day.

For those who don't mind venturing to Sevierville to eat, I highly recommend a local place called Holston's Kitchen. It's on Main St. as you head towards Veteran's Blvd. One of the best steaks I have ever eaten! I have also had the Italian chicken with the fettuccine Alfredo and it melted in my mouth!

We are headed to the area in late august.

Did you do the Dollywood water park?

Did you do any trips into the national park?

What other things did you do (besides eat...lol)
I would love to hear more about Dollywood and anything else you did.

We are renting a cabin with a full kitchen and plan to eat breakfast in the cabin have packed lunches and dinners in our cabin for our meals
(that's typical for how we travel)

If you went out for only one nice meal where would you do ( dinner not lunch)

Parrot mountain looks cool near Dollywood. Would be something neat if you aren't freaked out by Parrott's lol. Last time we were there we ate at Cherokee grill and it was the best meal of the trip.

We have a house rented on Norris Lake, but are taking two days mid trip and staying at The Inn on the River to do both DW parks. I bought a Gold SP so we could get the discounts. We have the Q bots and a Cabana rented...we cannot wait to go. Thanks for the restaurant recommendations. Since I have the SP I am trying to talk DH into going back for New Years to enjoy just the Pigeon Forge area.

LOVE Gatlinburg! We go every other year for 1-2 weeks. In fact I'm browsing this board in hopes to save money for my July 2015 trip!

I was in Pigeon Forge last week and it's the first time we've been in the last 2 years and I was amazed at the level of the crowds in town. It seems half of Pennsylvania and Ohio invaded last week. I think it will be off our list for summer going forward due to the crowd levels.

I remember the days of a quite little town in the mountians before the yankee invasion! ;)

Any opinions on Cade's Cove vs. the Roaring Fork Motor Trail? Unfortunately we have to go on a weekend, I assume it will be packed, and we may not want to deal with that for two days.

We go to the Smokies every year and always stay at the Wyndham timeshares in Sevierville. Nice place, nice people and I always get GREAT deals on eBay renting from owners. For the past two years, we've paid around $350 for a Sunday-Friday stay in a 2 bedroom condo.

Sterling Springs by any chance?

What are the odds that the area really quiets down mid-late august? I noticed Dollywood starts closing mid week around then.

I can only hope! School starts here tomorrow so I'm hoping it will be a tad slower by the weekend!

Arriving Aug 20th - will cross my fingers

Crossing my fingers too! We arrive on the 16th and will be there thru the 23rd. I'm glad you posted about Dollywood being closed mid week. We're at the point of trying to plan our agenda for the week and I was thinking about Dolly for either Wed or Thurs but will plan for Monday or Tuesday instead. Man I love the fact that New England goes back to school so much later than the rest of the country. :cool1:

The national park website says that the busiest time is July 1 through Aug 15 so there is hope for you guys arriving later in the month!

We went a couple of years ago the last two weeks in August. It was not crowded at all....the kids there are all back to school.

Dollywood and Splash Country are only open on Weekends.

We had such a great time that we are going back with 3 other families. We arrive on the 16th -21st and then are heading to Nashville for a few nights of city fun!

We rented a cabin again. You can't beat the space you get. And with beautiful views of the mountains its a win-win for us.

Plans are to white water raft, ATV mountain tour, Splash country and the go karts. They have some crazy tracks and my kids wanted to go every night. I found a hopper pass for $25 where you can go to a couple different places.

We did the Titanic last time. We thought it was great and the kids enjoyed too. But they watch the movie often.

We are going to plan on hitting some of the distillery tours this time. Do some shopping, the Island was not there last time, and try some new restaurants.

Can't wait!

There is a groupon right now (or at least was yesterday) for Cooter's place, mini golf and go karts for 5 people for I think $27.

Thanks....I will check out groupon again.

Is Pigeon Forge a dry town? I thought I remember it being last time we were there. But I saw at Kroger (near our cabin) they sell beer and wine???

I don't know if it's dry. I did read where one person said what's available is expensive.
