This was one of my favorite books in high school, so when I heard there was going to be a new movie I got pretty excited.

Then about 2 months ago, DBF and I saw a preview while at another movie and when I saw they had cast Tobey Maguire (sp?) I started to worry. Now the reviews have me even more worried.

Might go see this one just because I loved the book so much, and I do usually enjoy Leo. Might just wait for it to come to Redbox though.

Leo's Oscar shot is going to come from his next project, I think. But I still can't wait to see Gatsby. I'm young enough that the Redford version looked distractingly dated by the time I was old enough to see it, and everything I've heard about the new one has me intrigued.

I see that the movie cut a little into the juggernaut that is Iron Man 3. I was going to wait for video for the Great Gatsby but after these posts I'm not sure.

It is disappointing to hear about the music though. If a movie is a period piece then that should include the music IMO.

Saw it tonight in 3D.

I don't know why they bothered with a 3D version. 3D didn't add anything.

QFT. Other than the 3D aspect of the movie I watched I really thought it was a fine film. Knowing Baz Luhrmann's style I kind of expected the use of Jay-Z and other hip hop elements. I also will commit sacrilege and say Leo was a much better Gatsby than Redford. The Reford version of this novel as a whole pales in comparison. Just my opinion though.

I also thought the movie visually was as equally as beautiful as the novel itself. When I think Gatsby the book this film seemed to match that. This is a rare movie where Baz's style fits. If Leo didn't win an Oscar for Django or the countless other movies he's owned his role, he won't win for this one.

Lastly, Toby was a perfect Nick Carraway. I tend to pan Toby but he was brilliant in this role. I haven't liked him this much since "Pleasantville."

Agreed.

FWIW my 22 year old daughter loved the book and loved this movie, including the soundtrack. She never saw the Redford version, so she has nothing to compare it to. But she fell in love with DiCaprio in his "Titanic" and "Romeo + Juliet" days.

We loved it. Great adaptation of the book.

I never read the book or saw the Redford version but I really really enjoyed the movie. I'm a fan of Baz Luhrmann and the soundtrack and imagery was VERY much his style. Romeo and Juliette took place in present time but they spoke in the Shakespeare language. And Moulin Rouge used current music even though it took place MANY years ago. I think if you didn't know Baz's style going into the movie, it could've been very confusing and distracting.

I liked his Romeo + Juliet. But the modern music fit the setting and costuming. Never saw Moulin Rouge.

I'm already on board as liking it but this does accurately display the Baz touch of throwing everything at you in a movie:

I'm a bit late to this, but I watched it yesterday in 3D and absolutely LOVED IT!

I never saw the original as it was a bit before my time but the new one was spectacular.

I can understand some people not liking the soundtrack, but I'm a huge Jay-Z fan and honestly, that's what Baz Luhrmann does with his soundtracks.

Leo did a great job and Carey Mulligan is so absolutely adorable in this role

Honestly I wasn't planning to watch it in 3D but the time the movie was playing worked with my schedule. I felt the 3D added actually was done well and understated in many places.

I feel like watching it twice in the theater if there wasn't a few other movies I want to see.

Rented the Redford version last week, which I hadn't seen in years. Liked it even less now than I did the first time around. They minimized key elements and keft others out altogether.

I was hoping this performance would be the one to earn Leo his long-awaited Oscar. But, after seeing the movie today, I don't think it's going to happen. He was solid as always, but not enough for the academy to give him his due.

Oh well, it won't keep me from seeing his movie again before it leaves the theaters. :)

Leo should have won the oscar for his role in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." Annoys me to this day that he didn't. Just because he was too young.
