I was hoping this performance would be the one to earn Leo his long-awaited Oscar. But, after seeing the movie today, I don't think it's going to happen. He was solid as always, but not enough for the academy to give him his due.

Oh well, it won't keep me from seeing his movie again before it leaves the theaters. :)

I'll be going to see this on Monday... I hope I enjoy it; it's been getting mixed reviews.

I think most of us have read the book in h.s. and we all know in our heads who Gatsby should be. Robert Redford did the movie how many years ago and I think of him as Gatsby. Plus we all know how it ends.

It's weird that the friend I went with had not read it in H.S. For us it was required reading.

The anachronistic music nearly ruined the whole thing for me. But it's one of my two favorite books of all time (the other is Their Eyes Were Watching God), and as soon as all the hip-hop music stopped I was really happy with it.

I didn't read it in HS either. My tiny school had no required novels.

I'm very interested in seeing the movie. Do you think it would be OK for a 12YO? I think she mainly wants to go for the costumes.

A friend of mine seen it and he said it should be called "the slightly better then average Gatsby"

::yes:: Redford is Gatsby for me. From the commercials, Leo looks like he is trying too hard to fill big shoes. He is trying to be slick, and he comes off looking cheezy - and that's just in a 30 second commercial.

Gatsby wasn't slick. That was what other people perceived. Gatsby was tortured and Redford knew how to play the deeper undertones. From the commercial, it doesn't look like Leo got that.

Leo is a good actor. I just don't think Gatsby was his role.

And while I didn't care for Mia Farrow in the original movie. I never saw the appeal or what was the magnetic draw for her. But, I think even less of Carey Mulligan as Daisy.

There are scenes with the mistress and a group of unsavories that might be too much for a twelve year old.

Hi, Imzadi. There definitely is a cheese factor involved. You got that right. Are you going to see the movie?

No, your post kind of sealed it for me. I'll wait for it to come on TV.

Too bad. I really like Leo. But, I definitely think he has plenty of time to win his Oscar. Unlike women, who have a clock on their face & body parts, (unless they can become an interesting character actress,) men have more time to win their Oscars.

Saw it tonight in 3D.

I don't know why they bothered with a 3D version. 3D didn't add anything.

Hated the hip hop soundtrack. Yes, hip hop is as decadent and freewheeling as jazz was in the 1920's, but you don't charleston or foxtrot to hiphop.

I read the book in high school, and again a few months ago. This version is mostly true to the novel.

I actually prefer DiCaprio to Redford. Gatsby is supposed to be a poor kid who becomes rich through bootlegging, and his Oxford manners and "old sport" accent are an affectation. Redford never let us see the poor kid behind the affectations. But DiCaprio drops his pretentions and becomes more real after being reunited with Daisy.

Overall I liked the movie. But I agree that it's not Oscar material.

That's because Redford himself was always describes as someone from the east with an Ivy league education. He was neither of those. I saw an interview with him where that description of him really surprised & annoyed him and he didn't understand here it came from. :confused3

So maybe he thought more of his real rough side would show through without having to act it.

But, I think the line in The Way We Were, was the epitome of how people think of Redford, "Everything came too easily to him, but at least he knew it. About once a month he worried that he was a fraud."

I saw the movie tonight. Really liked the soundtrack!

Can't wait to see this movie. It was one of the few books I had to read in high that I actually liked. I know people like the other movie (with Robert Redford) but it was really chessey and dated when I first saw it 20 years ago.

I saw the movie yesterday w/ 14/15yo's. We all loved the movie. I think Leo did a great job. I never saw Redford nor read the book (not required in my HS). We saw it in 3d. I normally enjoy 3d, but not with this film. I think it took away some of the "drama".

I think the 1974 movie caught the romanticism of the book but not the underlying grit.
