Gas!!!

I saw on my local news where several "Lukoil"-branded stations have inflated their gas prices (to $9.99 a gallon!) as a means to voice their protests to the gasoline wholesalers, in that region.

Ouch!

The article I read said they didn't actually charge those prices, they just put them on the signs for 24 hours to send a message.

Considering this is the budget board and we can't control the price of gas.. it seems natural that every once in a while a thread shows up to whine about it.

And since these are the disboards, it seems like its also natural that someone posts a reply that is just plain mean.

Like pp said, hard to change jobs when you are lucky to have one and there is double digit unemployment. Hard to save enough for a down payment on a new affordable car or to pay cash on a used one when your wallet is empty from paying extra for gas, for food and utilities- all of which are rising because of the price of gas.(especially when you know you have to have 6-12months emergency money instead of the 3months worth that previous generations were told) Can't accept a job in another state when you can't sell your current house which is underwater...but you're faithfully paying your mortgage while around you people are walking away driving down values. Just so much you can do or cut and yes sometimes we want to whine.

Until the government stops allowing the price of oil to be determined on futures and speculating, we won't see any relief. What I'd like to know is why the price of gas at the pump is as high as when barrel prices were closer to $140 in 2007/2008 and now they are much less?

OP- vent away...many of us feel your pain.

Agree....I whine about the price of gas going up and my pay not going up, but the car I drive and the places I go are personal choices that I have made. But I still don't like the fact that gas prices are so high......

I get close to 30 miles/gallon and my commute is less than 2 miles. The price of gas makes me mad, I can hardly imagine what most people feel like. I say whine away.
It would probably cost me about $30,000 to pay off the bank to let somebody take my house if I needed to move... that is a LOT of gas, just moving is really not the cost effective answer for most. It's just a crappy situation.

I consider myself lucky, when I purchased another, not new but newer car I got a focus, and I get good gas mileage, I use about half tank of gas to get back and forth to work each week, I try to keep my grocery shopping to once every other week so as to cut down on gas usage and gas around here is just under $4 a gallon this week, so each week it costs me about $25 to fill it up depending if I have to make a trip to my mothers or not. I can not move closer to work as moving closer to work would put me smack dab in the the most dangerous section of town, not an option and since I have over 27 yrs in, I am not about to give up my job being this close to retirement. My only hope is that prices do not go up beyond my ability to get to work before I can retire. I can not ride the bus to work as there is not a bus line in my area of town, and ride share is not possible as well, so I am stuck.

I am complaining about the cost of gas as I do not feel anything is being done and it not only hits me at the gas pump, but at the grocery and everywhere I spend my hard earned money, the economy will not get better until gas prices get better. Well, that is my humble opinion.

Just as an aside, I am a widow and will soon be on a fixed income, like I said the cost of gas increases the cost of everything to include the food I eat, my health will not allow for me to just go out and work more to make up the difference, government is involved as they will NOT let us develop and use all that is available to us, this keeps our gas prices high and I do think if they will not let us use what is available, then it is governments responsibility to keep what we do have at a reasonable price, if that means control the speculators, well then so be it.

the cost of gas is currently purely driven by greed.

check out http://gasprediction.com/ -- its a website run by a former Canadian politician who was forced to resign -- because of his website --

it was originally Canadian, but they have expanded to US as well some explanations as to why the prices are where they are , as well as where they SHOULD be based on the price of crude ..

bottom line is -- there is more oil then they are admitting and the oil companies are pushing up the price for maximum profit before the inevitable crash..

I disagree. The media is biased and chooses what to put on the news.

It would cost ALOT more to buy a more fuel effiecient car or to move closer to work. Do you know all of the costs that are involved with moving or buying another car? Just the taxes alone on a car are enormous!

No one is whining. What needs to be changed are the gas prices!

No they don't. oil is a commodity. We are addicted to a product we do not own. If I'm the owner why should I lower my prices. Not my fault that families decided ot buy gas guzzling cars and now the average (notice I type average) family owns at least 2 cars.

America consumes roughly 21 million barrels of the stuff every day yet only produces about 9. do the math. combine that with the fact that many of the countries controlling the price of crude, don't particularly like us. and yes speculation and investors do effect the market short term but normally everyone is screaming at the government to stop interefering in our lives I find it rather ironic that in this case we want the feds to step in and do some thing

Why is it greed? I own a product, you want that product, I'm going to charge as much as the market will bare.

Apple makes the Ipad, they have the right to charge what ever they want and do so.

No one has some inalienable rights to cheap gas.Like so many of our other problems we have been warned about our dependance on the stuff for 20 years and now that the stuff has hit the fan do we panic.

Lets start paying the prices that the rest of the world does and see what happens. The only thing that forces us to change our behaviour is money. We will develop alternatives only when we gas prices make us pay out the wazoo. Winston churchill said it best "Americans will do the right thing, only after exhausting all other possibilities"

...and they'll whine about it incessantly the whole way.

I love the fact that it's considered "mean" to point out that when the price of something is completely out of your control, your only recourse is to change your own behavior, OH HEAVENS FORFEND I ACTUALLY SUGEST TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR CONSUMPTION!!!!!

LOL too funny, people, too funny.

And the government should not try to fix a situation as they felt they should fix our healthcare system.....

Nope, I'm still in favor of the Fed government getting out of the way. If not for government interference we could improve the gas prices AND the unemployment rates. Roll back the red tape and put more American roughnecks to work!

Yesterday I could only get half a tank because the pump shuts off at $70. At $4.49 per gallon it'll take me two transactions for a full tank.
