Not a question about the Fort but it is about my trip to the Fort. We leave on Fri from Massachusetts. Does anyone know if the pumps south of here have been adjusted to allow a higher amount to be pumped before shutting off. Around here when paying at the pump with a debit/credit card they shut off at $75.00. If you need to pump more you have to re swipe the card and start pumping again. We were in New Hampshire a few weeks ago and the pump shut off at $100.00 which still wasn't enough to fill up my Yukon. More of hassle thing then a big deal but I'm just curious about the states south of me.

When we went to FL from VA in April they were not any higher that I noticed. They really need to raise them. It is a big pain. We had some that were $75 and some that were $100. That was just in our Tahoe. Can't wait til December when we take the motorhome to the Fort. :faint:

Being as I am from mass also, I too know the pain, that is getting fuel, an eyedropper at a time.
I have had cards shut off because of trying to reuse it too rapidly.
I usually have to use 3 or 4 cards so they dont get shut off.
And yes down south, I had the same problem.
That is except for the flying J truck stops.
There you can pump till you run out of money.
Which if you dont know "they are online", is kind of like the Howard Johnson's of yesteryear.
There is a truck area and an RV area.
That way you aren't tracking crap and grease into your RV.
You can park there overnight in a special area just for RVs.
Very user friendly and safe for a family,Even if you have a dog.
There is no charge.
They have restaurants, store, dump stations, etc.
You wont be disappointed.

wrongagain are you using diesel or gas? I thought I remembered last year being cut off even at Flying J. We have a gas mh. That would be really nice if you could just fill up one time. Is there a difference in the pumps for diesel or gas or do they have the same cut offs? Just curious.

BTW- I did find the Flying Js to be a nice place to stop.

Wrongagain,

Thanks for the info. I am really trying to push the driving limits on the first day of travel. We are leaving at about 8pm and I would like to drive straight through until Sat. evening sometime. Ideally I would like to have a 5 hr. or less drive on Sun. morning to finish the trip. Any idea of a Flying J or cheap campground that would fit into that schedule. We have never done this trip before, have 3 kids (age 7, 5 and 5), will be towing a 30 foot TT and leaving from the MA/RI boarder if that helps you in any way.

The gas pumps are a pain. I always take the credit card inside and while my husband pumps. They will let the pump run until you are full that way. It sure beats having to pump a couple of times.

In April we went to Key West all the way from Maine and it was hit or miss what you were going to find at any one station. Some cut us off at $75 or $100 and didn't let us pump again even...geez!
yes, Flying J's do let you pump to your heart's content and we have a gas motorhome.

Nancy

Thanks wdwbound. Wonder if that changed recently? This was last December that I was thinking about.

Wow, that was a long trip. I LOVE Key West.

We made it to Carmel Church Virginia flying J the first night, going on about the same schedule as you.
And another flying J the next night, cant remember where.

Wdwbound,

Gues you have my trip beat. Sounds like a great vacation though.

Wrongagain,
Thanks for the info.

I just used a pump recently that had the limits listed right on the pump.

$50 for VISA

$75 for MC, AMEX, and Discover

I think it is the security of the individual credit card companies that won't allow a 2nd use immediately.

I just use a different card.

I also noticed once when I filled up the third time in the same day, I had to go inside, and get it authorized inside, then the clerk wanted to know a $$ amount, and I was like, I want to fill it up, I don't know?? She said I have to have a $$ amount, so I told her $100, then of course when it took $70 to fill it up, (this was 2 years ago) it took 30 minutes to make sure the transaction was corrected., AAAAARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!:furious:

I'm about ready to just starting buying BP and/or Shell gas cards at home inside the store in $100 increments. Then I can do a complete fillup with one card without going inside on trips.

it depends on what card you are using at flying j...i used a credit card and it filled up to the brim, used a debit card and it shut off at 75

just my experience

The card I use for gas is a Visa. I bet that is where my problem was. I am pretty sure it cut off at $75 at the Flying J.

Our gas card is a Visa and we have never been cut off at $50 thank goodness. I thought it was set State by State by each State. :confused3

We have been cut off at $75 and cut off at $100. We use the card twice in a row and so far haven't had any trouble. I heard if you try three times in a row they cut you off.

They just need to raise the limit on the pumps. Would make all of our lives much easier.

What "brand" of gas is at Flying J??

I'm just wondering cause I've had to quit using Kangaroo and Murphy gas cause it causes problems with my engine. I pretty much stick to Shell, BP, and Texaco gas and have no problems.

I was told recently that the shut off amount is set by the bank issuing the card. Debit shuts off at $75 for me. If used as Credit, I have had it go well above $100 to fill up. Then again, I have had credit shut me down too, so.........

flying j uses conoco gas

When we went down in May, I noticed something else. There are now stations charging two different prices for gas. A cash price and a credit price. :confused3 The cash price is about 5-7 cents cheaper. I thought wow, haven't seen that since I was a kid. I thought at some point they put a stop to it, but guess it has come back again.

they had a story on the news that the credit card companies are charging 10 cents a gallon for the priviledge of them using credit services so the stations are taking between 5-8 cents off so you will buy from them...they aren't going to see that money anyway....

Carol, I don't know about Kangaroo, but Murphy has switched to 10% ethanol. That could be what caused your problem. Alcohol evaporates faster than gas, and if you have condensation in your tank, it can cause it to run bad until it works out of the fuel system.
