Gas prices and Katrina

Well I just called Disney and they said their gas is supplied via the Virgin Islands and there is no shortage. I wish I could get a handle on things...so many rumors out there, noone really knows what's going on. I refuse to believe this county is so weak that something like this could shut it down. According to the pipeline websites, both are up and running upwards of 61% capacity, which means as a nation we're only down by 10% as a whole....and the pipelines are expected to increase over the weekend.

So what the heck is going on....hearing way too many things, but I'm coming in on Wed. the 8th, just six days from now...hope everything has calmed down by then.

Our gas is up to 3.11 here in Tennessee and as low as 2.89 a gallon. Everyone who I have talked to that has gotten gas in the past few days said at least 5 pumps have bags over them...SOOOOO who really knows what will happen??? All I know is that besides going to the grocery store and taking my daughter to and from school I am not going anywhere I am staying put....Maybe it will help us save some money!!!

I just filled up at 3.19 a gallon. My tank was only 1/3 down and it still cost me 46.00.
Yesterday it was 2.67.

From what I heard gas stations only make an average of 10 cents a gallon on gas, and get loads of 20,000 of gas at a time. It can be a lot of money for a small gas station to front if they have to pay COD.

The tanker trucks you see carry 5,000 gallons. Not 20,000.
The payment scheme is called load to load. When a delivery occurs they must pay for the PRIOR delivery. Which they have already sold.

This morning I thought I was seeing things when the closest gas station had a price of $3.29 posted. I drove down the road and happily found a station selling the same gas for $2.83. On my way home from work, the same station was up to $3.09. Could the gas in the tanks have gotten more expensive?!!!

Another thing we need to mention is that this is Labor Day Weekend ! and many people take to the roads... I don't think it is as much of a panic, but some simply need to get gas. I am not saying that there isn't any panic, but that there are some that just need the gas. I know I canceled my weekend to Disney because of it. I wasn't going to get stuck without gas somewhere on I-4 or I-75..and if taking the back roads US17 & US 27...I am saving my gas for work, in the event that we do not get a delivery. What really makes me wonder is if the school districts are running out of gas...what is that from? They do not share their gas with county? There is no panic & topping off going on there? 11 counties in FL have the same situation. There are some that have stopped all afterschool activity buses??? Why? They are conserving what they have left. Why would they be doing that if they knew when the next delivery will be? My county has a 10 day supply, my sister just told me that they said her county has about 5-7 days & then they will run out.
It is interesting to see that Disney gets their gas from the Virgin Islands. Maybe they should share some The rest of FL's doesn't.

Please, people, go to www.congress.org, find your senators and congressmen, and send them an e-mail about this. The more the better. There is no question that they are gouging-they have not purchased the fuel yet, and they're already raising the gas prices! And on RUMORS! On top of that, news that Bush is releasing reserves DIDN"T LOWER PRICES! If they can go up on news only, they should go down on news only! Also write your governor and ask for caps! Something's gotta give!

I like your post! I am not sure if this link will work but I read it on one of my local news sites. It states that in 1980 the price was $90 per barrel for the oil, now it is $70. With that...why are our prices so high? I know for a fact in 1980, gas was way under $1.00 per gallon and that was in NY. I moved to FL in 1991 & it was cheaper here than NY ..it was like 89 cents a gallon & NY was like $1.35.... and that was in 1991. As I said, in 1980 gas was much cheaper than today but cost more per barrel. Something is wrong with this picture? Maybe they need a larger profit due to the cost of inflation. Here in MI our governor decided to call a state of emergency for something (honestly it escapes me now) and she can do some of these things

1 - put a curfew on driving (like restrict driving hours)
2 - put a limit on the amount of gas that can be bought at one time

and a few others that I am totally blank on right now.

So far I haven't seen any dry stations so I don't know.

Yes, please do this! I did this on Tuesday already, to our Senators/Congressmen/Governor/President/Vice President. It's easy to complain about it and do nothing, but please at least email them. Can't really complain if you haven't voiced your opinion to the only people who can do something about it.

Ugh, where I am in MA the price was $2.55/gallon on Sunday, $2.77/gallon on Monday, $3.29/gallon Tuesday and now $3.39. Good grief.

I heard on the news that there's a proposal to halt the tax of.21/gallon until December, but who knows . . .

That "$90 per barrel" is in today's dollars not 1980 dollars. I don't know offhand what the actual price of oil was in 1980 but it wasn't $90 a barrel.

Maybe it was the tanks the gas stations have that hold 20,000 gallons? I heard on 2 different stations that a lot of gas stations pay for their gas load when the next load comes. I don't know much about it. I was just posting what they were saying on the news.

Right, and 1980 or 1981 (whenever we hit the record) gas prices in today's dollars were a national average of $3.11. So it's really not that out of whack.

I'm not a Bush supporter and I'm glad I did'nt vote for him but some of you must of voted for him and you are the same people who are now complaining. These prices are ridiculous for Bush and Chaney to both come from oil backgronds. Sounds a little fishy to me!!

I'm in Canyon Country, CA. (just north of down town Los Angeles) and yesterday I paid $2.79 per Gal. and today it is up to $3.50 and the corner station is out of gas. Folks are filling up every vehicle they own whether they drive it or not such as their motor homes and boats (and it's not because they are going away for the long weekend). We were thinking about driving down to Disneyland this weekend but if there is going to be shortages of gas I need to top off again tomarrow (if I can) and conserve for work next week.

Here in Delaware gas jumped over 40 cents per gallon from yesterday morning to yesterday afternoon,... 8 hours later. Regular unleaded was $3.10 per gallon. What I'm wondering,... will the bus transportation be "rationed" at WDW? Would this mean longer waits between busses,... more crowded? I could cancel if this convenience factor was taken away.

That's exactly what has been happening in NJ.
Every station I have seen went up Tuesday, then again Wednesday and Thursday. Monday gas was $2.55 and today it is $3.35. Unless these people are getting deliveries every single day, I don't see how the price they charge is related to the price they pay. Someone is making a whole of of money off of this tragedy and I think it is disgraceful.

No, I just think its ironic that the same people who voted for this moron are now complaining. People were complaining about Bush earlier in the thread so I did'nt bring it up I just put my two cents in about Bush. Two of the worst events in our history have happened during his presidency. Just something to think about!!!
