Garter for prom....

I graduated in '83 and never heard of them. My son who is a senior went to prom this weekend. I will have to ask him if he has heard of it.



ETA: Just checked with my son and he said no garters at his prom and gave me a very strange look when I asked him about it.

I find the whole idea kinda creepy. With the boys hanging them on their rear view mirrors, it just seems like a trophy to me.

Around here some girls give their date the Boutonieere that is attached to the garter and the boy wears it on his arm-sounds kinda tacky to me.

after watching the 2 hour 'e investigates proms' special this weekend i think garters or wine glasses or sovineer thongs would be the last of my concerns if i had a kid of prom age.

yikes i mean, i know prom behaviour among a good number of my classmates was pretty wild by the standards of the times in the late 70's ( lots of consenual sex, lots of drinking but they did actualy attend the event ) but i could'nt believe the stuff that goes on now. ye gods! the partying is insane in and of itself, but the attitudes of all these boys who figure that if they've been getting some action from a girl for regular dates then shelling out a few hundred for tux rental, flowers and a limo automaticaly comes with the expectation of no holds barred sex it was truly frightening it was also surprising to me about the schools that have cancelled doing proms altogether because of some horrendous tragedies involving attendees.

btw-anyone else know if hotels in their area up the minimum age for making a resie prom weekend? reason i ask is there was a big problem with crazy parties in one of the cities near us every year when the schools held their proms so many of the hotels upped their resie age for those dates to 25 with a photo i.d. and a major credit card.

Our prom favors were glasses with the date and theme on them.

I got all kinds of Prom goodies in a bag. I went to four proms and I got a garter at each in my "favor" bag.

I also got frames, candles, and a glass with the date and theme for each.

I'll admit I never knew what to do with the garter. I think they're probably all still at my room in my parent's house collecting dust with the glasses.

I haven't read through all of these posts, but my sister & I were just talking about this very topic this weekend. She is a teacher and was prom sponsor for 3 years. Her school had been doing a garter ceremony, where the girls get in a circle & the guys get inside the circle facing their girl. The boys take off the garter & put it on their arm. My sister says that it's a symbol of "I'm getting lucky later". She put a stop to the garter ceremony.

My prom was in 1992 in Virginia Beach and we did't have garters nor favors.

The garters sound tacky and trashy (sorry to anyone who likes them) and beer/wine glasses are irresponsible now that the drinking age is 21.

My senior prom was in 2001. I had never heard of the garter thing until sometime last year. Our schools did not do it and I bet if you asked the kids about it most would likely stare at you like you had 4 heads. My junior prom gave out etched martini glasses as a favor. It's sitting in my curio with some random ribbons in it. My senior year favor was a lame picture frame.

The seniors around here still hang their tassels on their rearview mirror. They are given one specifically for that. Lately most of them have also written all over their windows stating what school they attend and the year they graduate.
