Garbage wars in suburbia.

My DH is getting into something I really think he shouldn't.

You guys tell me.

2 weeks ago the garbage men didn't take a can that had garbage and woody material in it (tree trimmings.). According to the website this is acceptable. Well when the 2nd garbage man (yard waste) came by and DH questioned him as to why he didn't take it he said it was the job of the 1st man. They also skipped my whole street until much later in the day then normal.

He called and complained.

The next week the same man did take it, but he saw DH watching him.

This morning both of our garbage cans are gone. Everyone else's cans are nicely and neatly lined up upside down on their curb. Ours are gone. Now they weren't the best cans, (I do want new ones) but they were fine cans.

I don't want him to call and complain. What do you think. (Edited to add, he did, but he tried to be nice about it.)

Anyone else with insight into garbage wars?

You ticked off the garbage man, he stole your cans. If it keeps happening with the new cans, I'd turn up the heat.

Not exactly the same thing, but every once in a while the garbage collectors will leave a bag with a note on it, saying it's too heavy & that we need to put it into 2 bags. I didn't realize there was a weight limit. :goodvibes If there is, I'm certainly not going to weigh my garbage. The majority of our garbage used to be dirty diapers. :lmao:

Our biggest garbage issue is the recycle bins. They empty them & throw them into the street. On windy days all the recycle bins end up flying all over the neighborhood, some never to be found. And neighbors are "borrowing" other neighbors recycle bins, because we have to pay for new ones, & after buying multiple recycle bins it gets a little old. I write our name & address on ours but we've lost 2 this year, allready.

Would not have called in the first place since the trash was picked up on the schedule trash day. The first truck could have been full and they needed to get a replacement truck. I have called to complain about missed pickups, but that is only when the trash still has not been picked up by the next afternoon amd I have also called to compliment the trashman for leaving my cans neatly on the curb after pickup.

Seems as though the trashman sent you a message when your cans went MIA and the neighbors' cans were neatly line up. He could have done worst.

Missing cans....look at it this way, trashman read your mind about wanting new cans and gave you your wish.

Ok, so he talked to a very nice lady who worked for the City. She said they would replace the cans in most cases, but you had to make a formal complaint and DH said his wife wouldn't let him leave his name and address this time.

He had to go to Home Depot for some other things this morning, so he is picking up new cans. I hope this ends now.

My friend thinks we should leave a case a beer and a white flag at the curb next week. :rolleyes1

Don't mess with the garbage man! One time I overstuffed a garbage can, and the garbage man just put the entire can into the trash truck. He did leave me the lid though.

:rotfl: We used to leave beer for the garbage men at Christmas time. I posted it on another board (not a dis board) when everyone was talking about Christmas gifts/ tips. I got raked over the coals for assuming they drink and it being such a blue collar gift. :confused3 I never saw the garbage man turn it down! Now we dont leave it because dh no longer drinks. Just thought it was funny.

My neighbors are moving & left a paper grocery bag full of beer & soda for the garbage collectors, with a note thanking them for all their hard work. I would never have thought about that.

That’s just sad...you are trying to be nice...even if they don’t drink it i'm sure they know someone who does.... :thumbsup2
As for us we always leave beer around the holidays, after cleaning out the garage, or if it just looks like a lot of garbage....(its always placed away from the trash with a nice thank you note)

That is what I was thinking.

DH and I don't drink beer either, so I don't think we will do that (as my friend suggested.)

The other issue would get teens finding it and then thinking they found the magic gargabe can beer supply. :rotfl: Can't have that.

We talked about dougnuts or something else like that, but I don't think it is a good idea either. (racoons)

DH always makes friends with the garbage man. In fact he would give him things in exchange for taking stuff. My dh is a salesman....:lmao:

Even though the package says 18 to 30 pounds, it doesn't really hold that much.

When we re-did the backyard, we had a couple of weeks with some huge trash piles. Nothing was heavy, but the sidewalk was literally filled with trash. It was embarassing. I made sure I was home on trash morning, and when the truck came, I ran outside with a $20. I thanked the guys for their hard work, apologized for the extra trash, and told them to have lunch on me. They really appreciated the gesture, and I really appreciated their taking the stuff. They always smile and wave at us now.

I was just trying to save some money for Disney. ;)

And with 2 kids in diapers I think I'd crossed over into CrazyLand.

Wow, that was nice of you. We leave our garbage men gift cards to Dunkin Donuts every Christmas, assuming they drink coffee and eat donuts. They probably would prefer beer and soda! :rotfl:

In the first year we were living in our house, which was the year that Central Florida had a bunch of storms and hurricanes, whenever we cleaned up the yard after a storm and carefully bundled the wood and set out for the trash as we were supposed to, after the garbage men did our pick up, they would throw our cans OVER the fence and at the house. :confused3 I can understand they were probably stressed by all the extra work, but I didn't cause the storms.

We never did call and complain or anything though, and I never really paid attention to see if that happened to other houses on the street (though ours by far has more trees and so most likely had more to be picked up), but after that time period we never had any more problems.

I tried complaining once and ended up so mad I'll just replace the cans before I go though that stress again.

But it was just flat out wrong IMO that they take no responsibility for their mistakes and the result of their sloppy work. The can we have has a broken handle because my wife saw them picking it up and swinging it by one hand when it was full. The lid is warped because when they don't stuff it in the can, they leave it off and it ends up who knows where. If we didn't paint our house number on both parts we wouldn't have them anymore. :sad2:

Wow. This makes me realize how great my guys are. They always line the barrels up neatly right where we had them. And they do it for everyone in the city. We're not a wealthy town, either. We're a big city right outside of Boston.

Funny, back when we had curbside pickup, I had an old trash can I was trying to throw out for weeks. I finally had to put a note that said it was trash & please take the can. :)

Tell DH to not mess with the garbage man. Good luck. :goodvibes
