has anyone converted their integral garage into another room. I am thinking about this and was wondering just how much it would cost...any ideas. ?

We did this. It cost us about £5000 thirteen years ago which also included decorating, carpeting and furniture. I do remember £1000 of that went on the window ~ we had a huge bay one made so that it looked less like a garage conversion, if you know what I mean.

Not sure what it would cost now :confused3 a builder friend of ours did it for cost (and free board and lodging while he was waiting for his visa to Australia to come through) and DH did all the labouring. Next door converted theirs the following year and I think it cost them around £8000-9000. I don't know what the rules are regarding planning permission now ~ when we did ours we didn't need it, only a building regulations certificate. We'd never actually put our car in the garage so have never missed it and it was much, much cheaper than moving for the extra space.

If you go ahead what are you planning on using it as? We have ours as a dining room as I hated having a lounge/diner. I love now having a separate dining room and a separate lounge. :goodvibes

You should not need planning permission unless your extending the foot print of the garage, or your house has had permitted development rights removed for windows (only applicable for some new houses, or house has been extended before and had them removed, check with your local council).

As Elaine say you will need building regs approval.

I knew my planning degree would come in useful
somewhere!!

We've had 3 quotes. All were about £10k. That includes the electrics etc and fitting a window too. We don't need planning permission as it is inside the foot print of the house, just planning regs approval. Best of luck :)
