During a very forgettable stay at the Plaza (see other post) we were informed the hotel would be closing this spring. If you have reservations at the Plaza I highly suggest you reconsider. Hotels that are scheduled to be closed are notorious for being let go. Staff know about the closing so they find new jobs. Owners will not spend a dime on a hotel they are going to close. Folks it gets ugly, so please think twice about staying at the Plaza if you are trading points with DVC!

If you want someone else's opinion take a look at the reviews at tripadvisor.com

I just ran a series of dates from April 2005 through August 2005 and the Plaza is accepting reservations. Who knows????

Just for the fun of it, I went to the website of The Plaza Hotel at http://www.fairmont.com/theplaza/

I tried some reservation dates in for April, May, June and July 2005. In each case, the site offered a variety of rooms at different rates.

I really doubt that The Plaza is closing entirely this spring. The Plaza had a major renovation in the latter half of the 1990s. This month, three of The Plaza's restaurants (the Oak Room, the Oyster Bar and One C.P.S.) are closing, and there's no word of when or in what form they'll reopen. And I don't doubt that their are rooms that are ready for another renovation. But The Plaza continues to fill rooms with guests based on the hotel's great location and reputation as "The World's Most Famous Hotel."

I was told by the front desk manager, the President's Club Rep, the supervisor of housekeeping and two different doormen that the hotel would in fact be closing, the only issue is when. The investment group that purchased the hotel is running into issues with the historic groups, since the hotel is a registered site. The groups do not like the idea of coverting part of the building to condos. This was also confirmed with the Fairmont Hotel Corporation today, the exact date is just not know yet. Just because the hotel is taking reservations does not mean it will be open.

Look at what happened with Port Orleans when it was temporary closed. If I remember correctly they simply offered other accomodations or canceled the reservation.

The Plaza appears to be going through a transition and possibly they are going to close while they "reinvent" The Plaza.

Here's an article from last month about the condo plans.

Plaza Going Condo

Condos? Oh goody, I get to start a rumor :) DVD is buying the Plaza from the El Ad, and will convert it into the next off-site DVC. After all, someone said, "Think Big." :)

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

LOL! Hey Chuck did you read the part about the one-bedroom starting at $3 million? It's gonna take a heck of a lot of points!!! LOL!

Let's see ...... I think the average DVC room is probably pulling in over $1.25 mil. in sales. With a $3 million costs per Plazza 1 bdr........and thats before any bulk purchase disounts ........ That would mean we are looking at less then 2.5 times the points of a WDW DVC room .......... Consider that they get between 50-100 pts. a night at the Plazza now ...... and thats just for a standard Room .......... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ...... Very Interesting.
;) ;) ;)

Oooooh, then I'll be the first to come up with the acronym: VPH - The Villas at the Plaza Hotel! ;)
