FYI: More Cuts Coming

Disneyland Resort saw a 20% cut in labor costs from non-profit locations starting at the beginning of the month, this includes positions such as attractions, guest relations, custodial, entertainment, and more.
20% from the Non-profit locations. Not 20% from everywhere.

Lets say you have employees accustomed to 10 hours of overtime routinely. Cutting that OT would net you that 20% pretty easily. IF you made $12.5 and hour, and typically had 10 hours of OT, that would be a 27% reduction. Fulltime 40 hour a week jobs cut to 32 hours is that 20%.

Reports have indicated that overtime IS being cut.

Wage budget hit a wall, and cuts were needed. Stinks, but if they don't keep to budget, cuts have to happen.

I don't get your point. 20% isn't significant?

In what world is laying off 100 seasonal painters, ??number of greeters and reducing the hours of certain staff drastic cuts? Let's say it affects 1000 staff. There is reportedly at least 60,000 employees. That's under 2 percent. Fantasmic was reduced, but star wars fireworks added. Meet and greets deleted, but other new ones in the wings. Keep in mind many of the reduced staff were ramped up during the implementation of my magic +

This is a routine efficiency evaluation, and it is a small adjustment.

Cutting a second fantasmic and MSEP causes a capacity problem. As I also recently posted they are cutting people at registers as well meaning longer lines in shops. They are trimming park hours slightly as well as hours for gift shops and things like that. This all affects the guest. This descreases capacity at an already crowded resort. This is more than just a small adjustment especially when Disney is making as much money as they are.

I'm sort of confused on how they plan to cut staff AND overtime simultaneously. It seems to me that cutting staff generally increases the demand placed on the staff that's left.

It does but that staff can't work any over time to compensate for the increased demand. That increased demand will probably only increase further and crowds will look larger than they really are.

There is a difference in cutting staff to maintain a budget, as opposed to cutting staff due to budget overruns in other "ventures" which is what a lot of the referenced articles suggest. People getting laid off are paying for the mistakes of bean counters who make millions. You want to balance the budget? HOLD PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE.

Well they did let go the head of imagineering recently to help get rid of some of the problems but we have yet to see if that will change.

Tell me about it. I am heading out there 3/14-20:sad2: At least it's not the week of Good Friday. Oh well. Dole Whip can fix anything, right:)

Sorry, Dole is a premium brand. Its now pineapple whip, with less pineapple and less whip. And only 2 registers. But, beginning in the summer, if you would like to use a Fastpass for acquiring your pineapple whip you may (*maximum of 2 per Fastpass).

...And the hits keeeep on comin':sad2:

I understand the difference here with Disney and a GE plant. But no one would have ever thought the place would have a turn down like it has now, (25% attrition rate) and Disney may eventually have a major turn down as well as a result of the cost cutting.

After the March hours were adjusted earlier this week, Josh made an interesting comparison between the this year and last year:

"In 2015, Main Street Electrical Parade was scheduled 62 times in March. This year, it’s scheduled 31 times. In 2015, Fantasmic was scheduled 62 times. This year, it’s scheduled 43 times. In 2015, we saw 32 regular 8am opens. In 2016, we see zero. In 2015, Magic Kingdom hosted morning Extra Magic hour on 13 straight days starting a week before Easter and continuing for a week after. This year, we have just the two total that would be scheduled any other week during the year."

Those cuts are significant, and not small adjustments. They will directly impact guests every day. Crowds will be larger, because the park hours will be shorter. People will have to spend more time waiting to be able to see MSEP and Fantasmic!. Since the first Fantasmic! routinely fills to capacity, many people won't be able to see it at all. And, that's without factoring in longer rides at attractions because of CM cuts. As far as characters go, they've cut six recently and have only announced one new meet and greet. Even with the Star Wars Fireworks now extended through April, it's still much, much more subtraction than addition.

I read through these posts with all the hand wringing. I've got a very simple solution to it all. STOP GOING TO WDW! Problem solved. Every company in the country is working to do more with less people and Disney is not exempt. If you go to a restaurant or a hotel and end up not liking the food or service you don't keep going back do you? If you do keep going back then you must really like the service or the food and therefore have nothing to complain about. I'm guessing the majority of you have nothing to complain about and will be going back in the near future.

Ok, totally off topic here, but my husband just got home with Long John Silvers for our dinner and it is really good. But he had to wait an hour just to get it. Why? LJS only had 3 people working and the place was covered up! He was very nice and compassionate to the help, but he said there was others that were cursing up a storm. This us nothing more than corporate greed. Unless, and I guess it could be, that they had a few more scheduled and they didn't show, but I doubt it.

Like I said, off topic but kinda relates.

Our next trip will probably be our last for an extremely long time, but ya, corporate greed is every where. But you are on point.

It's not "corporate greed" to want to make a profit for stockholders. Last time I checked Disney isn't a non-profit. If you're so appalled with their corporate greed then you should cancel your trip and get your money refunded.

Ya, like Disney is gonna do that. Cororpate greed is over the top now a days. Just look at Carrier.

The old non-digital ticket books are way before my time but don't people seem to reminisce favourably about those?

Nooooooo...they are WORTH a lot of money because it's a piece of history, but I don't know anyone who reminisces about missing them LOL.

I can say that cutting folks in the gift shops will likely backfire. Shopping in DIsney is mainly impulse, as far as I can see. That impulse dies quickly if the line to pay is longer than the instant gratification that comes from the purchase.

We've done this. I win! ;)

I still plan to head west at some point and also continue to discuss the situation at WDW.
