Has anyone done a 5-7 day at FW then camp near the beach for the remainder of their vacation? On our drive home :drive: we were thinking about how great the vacation at Disney was but we were tired out :faint: and thought a couple/few days at the beach :beach: would round out our vacation wonderfully. Has anyone done this and where did you beach camp? :rainbow:

We thought about doing this with a stop at Myrtle Beach on the way back. We spent our "big" vacation camping there last summer and the kids really wanted to go back. We decided against it though as we get to WDW only every few years and though we should spend as much time as we could there instead of giving up a few days at WDW to go to the beach. We usually make at least one beach trip a year so we're willing to skip it to spend more time at FW since this will be our first ever FW trip.

I would recommend Myrtle though. Lots to do and campgrounds are fun. And close enough, you should be able to easily get home in a day when vacation is over.

We are doing this during Easter break. 3 nights at FTW (we've been to WDW every year since 2001, so no big deal if we don't hit the parks this time). Then we're heading to St. Pete to camp at Fort DeSoto for 3 more nights (this is a really nice beach IMHO). Then we start working our way back north, stopping at Hunting Island (near Hilton Head) in SC for 2 more nights near the beach.

We'll see how all the set-up and tear down goes.

Wow! DrewC...we are going to be at Fort De Soto too! Our plan is to stay April 15, 16 and 17 at Fort Wilderness and then 6 days at Fort de Soto, then come back to FW 3 days and then head back home. First time at Fort de Soto so DH and I are looking forward to it.

It will be our first time at Fort Desoto too. We drove through the campsite while visiting St. Pete Beach last year, and it looks awesome. Sites back right up to the water. We're really looking forward to the beach and trails around the park.

That is what we are doing this summer. We get to WDW on Sunday for 8 nights then the rest of that week at Myrtle (5 or 6 nights). We love both places and decided this year to do them both.

We've done this several times. Stopped over at Daytona Beach hotel), Hilton Head (Outdoor Resorts), and Myrtle Beach (Ocean Lakes). Makes the pain of leaving WDW a little less, and we come home more rested.

We've done this many times! FW for a week, then followed by 3-4 nights at Fort Desoto! The sites there are beautiful! We always get one right on the water! :goodvibes

How did you score your reservations at Ft DeSoto? We tried and it looked like they were booked for months!

We're spending 6 night at FW March 12th - March 18th and then 4 nights at Cocoa Beach with a day at the Space Center. We're looking forward to it, but Ft Desoto was our first choice. :sad1:

Jetty Park on the coastline near Cocoa Beach. My 4 kids loved it and begged to stay longer at Jetty than we had planned instead of moving onto Fort Wilderness. We got smart and went to Fort Wilderness first after that and then to Jetty. Two of my children no longer travel with us, but the other two still ask if we can go to Jetty Park, even if it means cutting time out of Fort Wilderness. There is a lot to do.

gemstone,
What did you and your kids like so much about Jetty Park? We're (2 adults)staying at some big "resort" called "Seasons in the Sun." I don't know anything about it other than it was profiled on RV Today. I'd appreciate any alternate suggestions. Is Jetty Park right on the water?
Thanks!

Jetty is located adjacent to the beach. The campground itself is within walking distance (as in over a boardwalk covered sand dune). Depending on where your site is you can also see the canal and fishing pier. You can not see the ocean, but it is about as close as you can get without actually parking on the beach. My kids (and my husband and I) liked it because we could fish off the pier/jetty, watch the cruise ships sail down the canal into the open ocean (including the Disney Ships), body surf, regular surf or just sit on the beach and enjoy the ambiance. We have seen (and felt the ground rumble) of the space shuttle launch There is an air force base (Patricks I think) accross the bay and we have watched regular launches as well. We thought the regular launches were more spectacular and they are more frequent than the shuttle ones. They are also close enough that you can see the launch pads with a pair of binoculars. When the shuttle goes up, the rocket boosters are towed from the open ocean back to the base through the canal next to the campground. Subs go out and military vessels also go out to the ocean through the canal as well. We have watched the dolphins play with departing cruise ships or just go through the canal. Sea turtles and manatee are also there on a regular basis. There are full and partiaal hook up sites. The map of the campground, I think is on line. My husband and I like to watch the ocean with binoculars. There are a lot of ships to watch.

One of the things available, but because we have the ikds with us, we haven't done is a casino cruise, free. A shuttle will drive you to the ship, from the campground. We plan to try this when the kids are not with us. there is a playground. Jetty park is open to the public. I think it is a municipal park, but the campground is secure and for campground guests only. There is a baait and tackle shop, snack bar, a small store, laundary area and bathhouse. There is also an enclosed pavilllion area with a place you can watch the ocean from inside. If you are ambitious, there is a bike path and you can walk along the shore to cocoa beach pier. It will take a while depending on your pace. My husband and kids rode their bicycles there. The beach is clean and the water is warm. Waves can be surfed, but are not huge. If you lie body surfing or boogie boarding (lots of adults do it there) you can do that too.

We liked it because it offered recreation in a different, less hectic paced way than at Disney. Relaxing and slower paced.

Despite all that is available, it is NOTa luxury capground and if you are looking for pristine and luxurious, this is not for you. If you want a more rustic camping experience, with lots of outdoor water activities, thjis fits the bill.
