A couple of questions regarding FW room keys.

I know in the past that you could access FW from the main parking lot throgh a gate. The gate had a keypad to enter a code which has probably been switched to now use your room key.

We will be travelling with my parents who are staying at FW.

Could they add DS to their reservation to get a room key that we could then use to enter the campground? Does a childs room key open the gate? They will only have their RV so the site would still only have RV and car which is permitted. I only ask to avoid the hassle of using Disney transportation from CBR to FW. Also, we will have a ton of extra baggage (dd 2, stroller and assorted toddler accessories) to transfer to the FW buses which would be a pain.

I would work, the child ID will open the gate, and you can have an RV and a car on the site.....
They could even give you the parking pass to put in the dash of your car, as they will not need it.

There has been some construction at Fort Wilderness. The key-card access gate has been gone. All that remains is the Security host at the entrance of the resort. Just be careful not to go into the bus lane. :)

To answer the question about child's key cards... By default, a child's key does have key access. This can be removed at check in. You can verify the ability to open doors/gates, because there will be a large triangle on the right side that points which way you're supposed to insert the card. No triangle, no access. :)

OK... which is the bus lane... far left, far right. I would assume it is marked.

The bus lane as you enter Fort Wilderness is clearly marked... but what I was actually referring to was the Outpost Bus Stop bus lane, which is on the way to where the gate used to be.

Now I am a little confused...

Is the gate from the visitor parking lot no longer there and do I need to go through the main entrance?

There are two parking lots. The ungated visitors parking lot, which does not have vehicle access to Fort Wilderness. The other parking lot is the check-in parking lot, which does have vehicle access to Fort Wilderness. This area is guarded by a Security Kiosk. No longer do you have a second gate to get into the internal Fort Wilderness.
