I have fuzzy/fine/wavy hair that I wash every other day and flat iron about three times a week. The texture is so fuzzy .. No matter what I do. I take vitamins, and use decent products. I only color the roots (due to some grey). I have a under active thyroid so I'm not sure if this is the cause or just getting older (44). I've also noticed my ends are thinning and looking stringy (hair sits a tad below my shoulders). Tell me what you use and what's made the biggest difference with your hair...thanks!

Do you use a heat protectant before you flat iron? If you don't you should start, that could be causing some of the damage. Also look up proper ways to flat iron and be sure you follow the directions. You may be on a slow growth hair cycle?

Maybe heat damage. I have wavy hair and not a lot of volume. I got into the CurlTalk forums at naturallycurly.com because my girls have curls. There is a lot of talk there about co-washing (using conditioner only and scrubbing good). We experimented with that but in the end compromised with using sulfate-free shampoo (we use Loreal EverCurl- there are other varieties). We think it has helped our hair. I am also big on keeping their hair (and mine) from heat damage. DD13 straightens maybe twice a year. DD16 tried it once and never cares to do it again. I use a mousse and a spray gel to pump up my waves.

I have no idea how the thyroid might affect it.

You can check out those forums though, they might be helpful.

Have you thought about cutting the thin ends off? I finally faced the fact that I'd never be able to have long hair after children, as my hair does this weird cow-lick thing when it gets past my shoulders.

That is very good advice. You should use the lowest setting on the flat iron that will produce the results you need in one pass of the flat iron, and hair should be totally dry. I have started use the Cleansing Conditioner by Matrix for fine hair and love it.

Find someone who is trained to do a Deva haircut. Changed my DD's life! She now loves her hair. Google it for more information. Good luck!

what meds are you on for your thyroid? I ask b/c I got on meds for mine and my "has been thick and stick straight for 30+ years" hair now is fuzzy. Like it wants to be curly/wavy but has not decided yet so it just is FUZZ. Drives me fricking batty.
