Future Ship Names

My vote: Disney Imagine, Disney Wishes or Disney Starlight (or Starbright.) My daughter would love the PP name - Marvel! LOL

HOWEVER, if they really are going to replace the Magic, then I think they should have the Magic II in honor of their original classic ship. And I hope they don't scrap the Magic, but make it a floating hotel/restaurant/etc. She just has too much meaning and significance to be scrapped!

Meyer Werft is booked solid through 2017 with orders for Royal and NCL so you likely aren't getting anything out of them to 2018 anyway. 2018 definitely qualifies as mid-term in most of the business planning I deal with.

And that would be the 20th anniversary of The Magic!

i also don't see more than 4 ships. DCL caters to families with kids, and they have trouble filling their ships when kids are in school.

The only thing I could see benefiting them by adding two more ships are scenarios like: keeping one ship out of NYC and/or Baltimore with Bermuda options, one ship permanently in Hawaii to benefit Aulani (and yes, there'd be all kinds of logistics with licensing and dock space -- but NCL needs more competition), one ship on the west coast maybe alternating Panama Canal cruises out of L.A., one ship in Europe and two ships out of Port Canaveral. Other than tossing up some new ports in Europe, their itineraries are getting stale and few departure port options compared to other cruise lines with more ships. Unfortunately, I fear that no matter how many ships they add, their prices will always be some of the highest in the industry :worried:

Love Stripes ;)

It's hard when people comment about things they know nothing about when those of us with experience know the real deal, so if I want to defend my position, I will. It's not my 'opinion,' it's what actually happened. Regardless, you are right - I should lighten up. I'm lucky to be a frequent cruiser. It's frustrating when others assume that because it's Disney, it's perfect.....

Full disclosure: no, I *haven't* been on the Magic before; I'm not that lucky. If it's the worst problem I have, then I would say I'm doing all right. I wasn't trying to state a fact. That's why I used the phrase "I can't imagine...". I certainly don't think something is perfect simply because there's a Mickey logo on it- I'm not a Disney Sheep. I'm sorry you had a bad experience on your cruise, though. I can tell you from being on the Fantasy everything was incredible- I'd like to think if a ten-year-old ship went into dry dock, Disney would do what they could to at least bring her up to par with a ship that is (now) only two years old. Apparently I'm wrong about that. Maybe next time you'll be able to take advantage of a sailing on the Fantasy, and you won't have issues like the ones you've had on the Magic, both before and after her dry dock :flower3:

I've been in the Fantasy 4 times for a total of 28 nights ;) In fact, was on the Magic in Oct and then the Fantasy just in March. We cruise frequently. I wouldn't call the Magic a bad experience; just one that didn't live up to the Disney hype. I'm still excited to board her again in less than 90 days!!!

It's all good - you are right; first world problems for sure ;)

Lucky you! It'll be quite a while until my next Disney Cruise :-\ Have a Konk Kooler for me!!

Sorry to disappoint you but most dry docks are only 2-3 weeks and repairs & maintenance done are invisible to most guests. Sure, maybe something minor like when they switched to flat panel TVs or replaced the carpets but it's not like when someone remodels their home and you go inside and say, wow! what a difference. It's often a lot of engine work, painting the hull etc. Things that can't be done while in the water. This most recent drydock was extended and with a lot of hype. Having just sailed her in Barcelona right before the dry dock, seeing the media hype, then sailing again in March I was surprised a lot of things looked the same.
I couldn't believe they didn't remodel the cabin bathrooms which imho are in dire need as well as replace the arm rests in the WD Theater. These are such minor things which I don't complain on the cruise about nor would I say it makes me have a bad cruise. Still I notice.
It's hard to explain but kind of like watching my mom age. She's beautiful to me, I'm grateful to have her still and love her dearly but I know she's no longer a young lady. ;)
BTW, the Magic was 15 at the time of dry dock. The only way to bring her up to par with the Fantasy would be to build another Magic.

The problem with new itineraries is that everyone wants them during the summer - when their kids are out of school. Then what does DCL do with the ships the rest of the year? I don't think DCL has a big enough base of adult-only and/or retired cruisers like other cruise lines to sustain exotic itineraries during the off season.

Regarding basing a ship in Hawaii: NCL used to have 3 US-flagged ships that could home port in Hawaii, and now they have only 1 ship. If there was a market for more inter-island cruises, other cruise lines would've already filled that gap.

With the rumors swelling again and other starting threads about new ships, I thought it was time to revive this thread. Any more ideas for name for these two new ships?

If they are constantly having discounts on the Dream/Fantasy, it makes sense to move these ships out to more exotic (and easier to sell) itineraries and put a slightly smaller ship in their place.

I can see them adding 2 new ships to the fleet in the next few years, to be home ported out of Port Canaveral. I can see them taking the Magic to Asia (where it can pair with Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo parks), the Wonder to LA/Vancouver with Hawaii regularly thrown in (tying in DLR), leaving the Dream to do East Coast/Gulf coast ports and the Fantasy to move to Europe (DLP) for most of the year.

Other lines manage to make these itineraries work - in part because the school calendars in other parts of the world (or even year-round and home school calendars that are getting more popular in the US) don't align with the traditional US school calendar. They'll always get a premium in the summer/holidays, but I bet they'll find they can pair the ships with parks in other parts of the world just as easily and find new markets and new busy times in different parts of the world.

Maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part (since these are all itineraries I'd love to travel on! :thumbsup2) but given the Asian market is huge for Disney at the moment, I'd be surprised if they don't capitalize on it with DCL at some point in the next 5-10 years - and I think they'll need another ship to do so without losing their bread-and-butter in PC.

HI Silver, we usually agree but on this one, not so much!

The industry word on the toilet issues after drydock was really in a word ...*sabotage*................seems some one(most likely a worker) dumped a hardening material in the waste lines and it spread out, and plugged up or at least partially plugged up the line is various areas, that is why it took a few weeks to locate all the problem areas and clear out the drains.

Not Disney fault, but still thier responsibility to take care of. I believe where they dropped the ball was in not keeping a few cabins empty so as the problem showed up all the guests could be moved to other cabins.

As far as the ship itself and all DCL vessels, they are known to be very well kept.

I will not debate that a few guests areas still need some more work in places, EI the adult pool as you noted, comes to mind.

They (Classics) are still wonderful ships.

I believe the classic ships have 10 years more in the US trade and then they may be sent off to the far east or permanently in Europe.

Just MHO

There were issues before hand also. Ranging from water leaking in the ceilings of the atrium, to sewer smells in the halls and cabins. Alot of the smell came from dried out p traps. My wife and I were on the Magic in 2010 and the sewer smell was there right out of drydock.

I think part of the problem with the classics, and I still love them for different reasons, is that DCL wants $10 million worth of work for 5 and there surprised when things dont go there way. Which is why Im surpried they keep going back to Freeport. They have had nothing but problems with that yard. But they keep going back.
The other part of the problem is that alot of the materials in the Magic and Wonder are wearing out prematurely. I have a copy of the show Project Xtreme, and they showed the Magic going into Drydock in 08. When they ripped up the pools, DCL planned on just refinishing the pools based on their inspection and replacement plans. When the contractor pulled up all the material, surprise, all of the supports for the pools were rotting out and all had to be replaced.

As far as DCL selling off the Magic class eventually, Im not sure how far that will work, because Disney has a lot of proprietary technologies on the ships. How hard it would be to pul all of that out, and stil have a serviceable ship, Im not sure.
The other thing is that when lines "sell off" a ship, its more a of a transfer then a sale, as the receiving cmopany, is usally a subsidiary of the company moving the ship. As an example, when Monarch of the Seas went to Pullmantur, Pullmatur cruises is owned by RCL. Disney doesnt have that second or 3rd tier to transfer a ship to.

The shareholders meeting made it very clear that they wanted to prioritise new ports rather than new ships.

Very much so. They lack port variety, specially in the Caribbean. There are so many cool POCs that it kind of baffles me Disney only goes to a handful of them. However, no reason they can't do both concurrently. That is, expanding ports is not contingent in new ships or vice versa.

if there is a new ship one should be the imagination and have figment painting the name on the stern and have astue of the dreamfinder and figment in the atrium.

Love this idea too! Although I prefer Disney Imagine to Disney Imagination. JMO :thumbsup2

Like many others I thought of Disney Wish (which I like) and Disney Star (which I was just so so about...even though it popped to mind before I read the rest of the thread. Although, if you think about it...they make sense as a pair of ships if they are going with a new class of ship...that whole thing of "When you wish upon a star...." and all. :rotfl:

I also really like these other suggestions from posters;
Disney Adventure - really sounds like a Disney sort of name
Disney Believe

And yes....would LOVE to see them bring a ship back to the NYC port. Our first cruise was out of NYC and it was just so darn convenient for us (a couple of hours drive). So clearly I have selfish reasons for that. ;) If they did a New England / Canada cruise they could go to Prince Edward Island this time...and maybe actually stop in a New England port (which they didn't last time at all). :thumbsup2

I really need to find a way to add a poll to this thread to help record the support for each suggested name. Unfortunately, it will not be tonight.

There was a huge thread on ship names a few years ago before the Dream/Fantasy were named. I tried to find it but couldn't. It has pretty much the same names as on this thread but I remember it was really long and some additional interesting names proposed.

anyone have that thread bookmarked?

So, I did a search and found over a dozens threads from 2008 timeframe on naming the "new ships".

It was interesting to read through a few...the most common one that was being suggested....Disney Dream! Also almost just as common was Disney Wish or Wishes (this was a VERY popular suggestion). Fantasy was also suggested rather frequently (but Wishes was suggested more. There was also much, repeated, discussion around why Dream and Fantasy would not be picked because Carnival already had some ships with these names at the time. Guess we know better now.. :lmao:

Imagination & Imagine, Celebration, Pirate/Princess, Enchantment/Enchanted seemed to come up a lot back then as well.
